THE COCK CROWS

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, it is quite late and I’m quite tired and so I shall quite write these here notes in a hurry so I can get to bed before the cock crows. Does the cock really crow anymore or is that saying completely outmoded for us urban dwellers. I don’t know if I’ve ever heard a cock crow, frankly, other than in the motion pictures. I think I’d better stop right there, don’t you? There is no telling what unseemly places this could go. So, let me just say this: This. There, I’ve said “this” and I’m glad.

Yesterday was a day in which things happened. I got a good night’s sleep, got up and took sheet music to Staples for Xeroxing, after which I had some matzo brei and a bagel. Then I picked up a couple of packages, after which I came home and made CDRs, after which I picked up the Xeroxed sheet music. Everyone save for one cast member now has their stuff to learn, so that actually puts us ahead a little, which doesn’t happen very often. After that, I listened to some music from upcoming projects, and I began to organize information for the writing of liner notes – this one will take a bit longer as it’s two scores on one CD. I also have to watch each of the movies. Then it was time to mosey on over to the Dale of Glen to see Bat Boy at the Alex Theater.

I arrived and hung out with lots o’ folk I know, including our very own Miss Adryan Russ, Cabrillo’s Lewis Wilkenfeld, the choreographer for Bat Boy, Kirsten Chandler, along with her ever-lovin’ Stan Chandler and their adorable little boy, who came up to me and hugged me, which was so sweet, Michael G. Hawkins, Jason Graae, Michelle Duffy, Jerry Houser, Lloyd Schwartz, Nudie Musical (the film) choreographer Lloyd Gordon, Marsha Kramer, Damon Kirsche, Dan Callaway, Shannon Warne, and a nice gent who seems to be one of the biggest Nudie Musical fans ever.

Before the show, Dan Callaway, Teri Bibb, Steven Hack, and Shannon Warne (can’t remember if there was someone else) did some songs from the upcoming season of shows. And then Bat Boy began. I saw the show in its off-Broadway run, where it featured Kerry Butler. I didn’t really care for it back then – it seemed very self aware, had that cutesy self-referential stuff that was so hip back then, but its tone was also very dark and it just wasn’t my kind of show, even though it was very well performed. Seeing it again more than a decade later hasn’t changed my opinion of the show, although this concert staging had more of a “wink” to it than the darker off-Broadway production. The cast was very good, and the director, Joel Bishoff, whom I met when I recorded I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, which he directed, did a nice job moving everyone around and keeping the pace sharp, and Kirsten’s choreography was a big plus. They had a pretty big crowd for this one, although a few of the older patrons bolted not far in to act one.

We went backstage after, but it was just too crowded and chilly so I just went home. Since I hadn’t eaten since eleven-thirty, I got a snack on the way home, which I ate whilst answering e-mails. For a sweet, I had a moon pie and some low-fat, low-cal, chocolate chip ice cream.

I wrote the blurb for the Gardenia show, and did a few other things that needed doing and then it was time to write these here notes. Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I must get these here notes posted and get to bed for my beauty sleep before the damnable cock crows. Little known fact: The Cock Croweth was going to be Eugene O’Neill’s sequel to The Iceman Cometh. Now, let’s goeth to the next section.

Today, I have a few errands and whatnot to do in the morning, then I’ll grab a bite to eat, hopefully pick up a few packages, then I have a work session with Mr. John Boswell, to go through all the Gardenia material and do any arranging. That should take a couple of hours and then I immediately drive to Mr. Jason Graae’s house – he asked me to go with him to see some panel on LA theater, and I said yes.

Tomorrow, the helper and I are going to spend two or three hours organizing all the sheet music from the Gardenia shows, so that they’re all in folders for each specific show. It’s all just been piling up here and I need it all organized. Thursday is a rehearsal with the thirteen-year-old, after which I’m supping with our very own Alet Taylor to discuss several upcoming projects, including the LACC Lost In Boston show, which she’ll be doing. Then it’s more meetings, more rehearsals, and my book signing.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do errands and whatnot, pick up packages, lunch, have a work session, and then attend some panel on LA theater. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite off-Broadway plays and musicals? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland where I shall hopefully sleep through any crowing cocks.
