KRITZERLAND AT THE GARDENIA 11

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, the eleventh Kritzerland at the Gardenia show was a rousing success and a fabulously fabulous evening. We had a completely full house filled with some folks who are regulars at every show, and quite a few new folks. A great crowd that included my friends David Galligan, Barbara Deutsch, and Joan Ryan, plus the anniversary couple, Richard and Elizabeth Sherman. Gregory Harrison’s gorgeous nineteen-year-old daughter was there, and it was just complete fun even before the show began. Our thirteen-year-old opened the show again, singing Wilkommen (I changed the patter to – “Leave your troubles outside – on Santa Monica Boulevard. So, life is disappointing – forget it. In the Gardenia, life is beautiful – the wait staff is beautiful – even John Boswell is beautiful”), then going directly into City Lights from the act. She did beautifully and the rest of the show just went smoothly and effortlessly. The patter was fun and got some nice laughs, and all the performers did incredibly well, including Zachary Ford, Juliana Hansen, Damon Kirsche, Marsha Kramer, and Lauren Rubin, and Gregory Harrison was a real highlight of the show. I’m happy to say Gregory will also be appearing in our web series – he was so tickled by the idea and especially the episode I want him to do that he said yes immediately. We now have Beth Leavel, Barry Pearl, Gregory Harrison, and Brad Oscar and I’m waiting to hear from several more people. After the show, there were lots of lovely compliments, photographs were taken, and I met some really nice folks. Some of our regulars thought this was our best show yet, so that was nice to hear. I love working with these singers and I love working with John Boswell and as hard as it is to stick to his insane once a month schedule, the result is always worth it. We only had two tiny lyric flubs in the whole show, both in the same song – in one section of The Grass Is Always Greener Lauren jumped to a line from the encore – Marsha just looked at her and shook her head “no” and then Lauren got right back on track – it was funny. And then Marsha had to get one word for the encore – Boswell gave it to her and she was right back on track. Damon really did an unbelievable job – he has one of the greatest belts I’ve ever heard and it was thrilling to hear it, but also thrilling in his quiet song, Married/Marry Me. And Juliana socked home Cabaret (the final song) like nobody’s business. But everyone did a stellar job.

Prior to the show, I’d had an okay day – I woke up at five or something, then went back to bed around seven – I think I got eight hours, but barely. I did the long jog, ate an apple, did errands and whatnot, and then got ready for the show. We had our sound check and then a few of us went across the street and had some food at Pomodoro – I had a Caesar salad. After the show, some of us went to Jerry’s Deli, where I had a turkey sandwich and no fries or onion rings.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because it is very late and I am very tired and I must be up at seven, so I need as much beauty sleep as I can get, and therefore this amount of notes will simply have to do.

Today, I must be up at seven and at the lab at eight to do the sound layback for Nudie Musical. The people there think we’ll finish in the allotted time they’ve booked, but I have no idea how long it will take to EQ the sound and to get it so we’re all happy – once that happens, however, then it’s just laying it down in real time, and the only things we’ll have to stop for are some rubbery lip-synch problems in the first song, and to do the pull-up for the cut plumber scene. And I’ll have to hear the quality of the final song that runs over the end credits – if it’s not good enough, we’ll do what we did for the DVD and use the CD version. So, it will be interesting. After the session, I’ll do errands and whatnot, hopefully pick up a package or three, jog, and eat something light but amusing. Several people did comment that I lost weight so it must finally be showing.

Tomorrow, I know there are things going on but I can’t remember what, and the weekend has several things going on, including a rehearsal with the thirteen-year-old.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do an audio layback, I must pick up packages, I must jog, I must eat, and I must try to relax a little. Today’s topic of discussion: Who are your favorite singers of today? From Broadway, opera, pop, and country? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland.
