THE NOTES ACCORDING TO HOYLE

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I am somewhat exhausted and it’s only Tuesday. Part of it is because I had to be up at six in the morning to announce our new title. I did get another couple of hours sleep. I printed out a nice amount of orders, especially considering it was a holiday. They do a little parade here in my neighborhood every year and that’s always fun to watch. After it was over, I did the long jog, which was horrifyingly hard. After that, I had to get ready for our rehearsal with the thirteen-year-old. She and her family, including her brother, arrived at two. I told her to mark the singing with absolutely no loudness, but to do all the steps and staging we’d worked on, along with the patter. We ran the entire show, and I’m just really happy with this act – song selection, patter, movement, and her performance. I’m suspecting that once people see this show it’s going to open a whole floodgate of young people’s cabaret acts – that’s not necessarily a good thing, however. In fact, one fellow who does love to just do whatever I do, is teaching a young teens cabaret class. He said he was “inspired” by seeing the young teen of a friend of his. Anyone who knows this gentleman knows exactly what he was “inspired” by, which was, I believe, hearing about our show. This is not the first time this has happened with this fellow and it won’t be the last and it’s not just me.

After the rehearsal, we all convened outside and the youngster went into the pool and emerged only twice in the next four hours – for food. She’s a real water baby. I’d heated the pool to a nice and toasty 90 degrees so she wouldn’t be cold. It actually seemed to help clear her sinuses. Her brother also swam a lot with her. It was really hot outside. Then her father figured out the barbecue stuff and made the low-fat low-cal hot dogs, whilst mom was in the kitchen heating up the beans and setting out the cole slaw and potato salad and fruit salad. I had two hot dogs (total calories 320), two helpings of potato salad, and then for dessert mom had made a peanut butter and chocolate pound cake – of course, there was no way I wasn’t having a slice of it and so I did. But with everything I think I still managed to end up around 1000 calories, if you factor in the four-mile jog. It was all yummilicious.

After they left, I could barely see straight, so I saw crooked for a while. Then I looked at all the latest variations on the Nudie Musical blu-ray covers – I don’t think we’re quite there yet, but we’re really close now. I then sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched a little of a motion picture I’d TIVOd entitled Yours, Mine, and Ours, made in 1968, starring Miss Lucille Ball and Mr. Henry Fonda and a whole slew of kids. I’d never actually seen it, and it’s kind of charming in its old-fashioned way, although I think the star that Mr. Fonda replaced would have been better in this particular film – Fred MacMurray. Miss Ball is better here than in most of her post-I Love Lucy appearances. I haven’t finished it yet, because I was just too tired to do so.

Then I did some work on the computer, printed out more orders, and that was that. Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I really must get a good night’s beauty sleep.

Today, I may or may not have a meeting at LACC, then I have errands and whatnot to do, hopefully will have a package or two to retrieve, I’ll try to do the long jog, I’ll eat something light but amusing and then we have our stumble-through.

Tomorrow is, of course, our show at the Gardenia. We’ll have a sound check and then it’s show time at nine. I’m sure we’ll go out for a bite afterwards. Then Thursday at eight I’m back at the lab to do the sound layback for Nudie Musical – that should take about four hours if all goes according to Hoyle. I like that phrase – according to Hoyle. I think Hoyle was some card expert and wrote books that used “according to Hoyle.” I shall now overuse the expression all the livelong day and night. I also have some meetings and meals, and happily everything is written in my iCalendar.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do the long jog, maybe have a meeting, pick up a package or three, eat, and have a stumble-through. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your all-time favorite family comedies – movie and TV? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland according to Hoyle.
