101 IN THE SHADE

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, it was a broiling hot day here in the City of Studio yesterday. From what I was told, it was 101 degrees in the shade. Jogging was not that comfortable, but I did the full four miles. I did manage to get exactly eight hours of sleep, at which point the doorbell rang – it was the Pool Man, coming to check out the Pool Stuff so he can give an estimate to repair what’s there or to put in a whole new timer unit and switch box. I would prefer the latter, as the former is nothing but a Band-Aid on a very old system. If they pop for the new system, it’s all wireless and that will be ever so nice. Then the Handy Man arrived. The deadbolt lock on the patio doors has been malfunctioning, so we replaced that with a handy-dandy functioning new lock. He put a new filter thing in the air-conditioner vent in the hallway, he replaced the timer for the outside lights – the old timer had given up the ghost. He replaced all the terrible bulbs on the outside lights and he bought a new latch for the back gate, which he’ll install this morning. So, a lot of little things got attended to, which was very good. I picked up a couple of small packages, I did a lot of work on the computer, and then it was time for our stumble-through.

The first problem was that our guest star called and had to cancel coming to the stumble-through due to a personal thing. I try to be so clear up front that if there’s any danger of not doing the stumble-through that I’d prefer them not to do the show. The guests only have one rehearsal prior to the stumble-through and so to miss means we just have to hope it will all run smoothly at show time. Fortunately, he’ll be there for the sound check, so I can show and tell him the deal at that time. The second problem is that one of our performers went to the Gardenia instead of coming here. Again, we’re extremely clear in every e-mail that all rehearsals are at my place – so, we waited and the performer arrived about fifteen minutes late. Then we began. It’s really fun starting a show with an overture – our first time, with the overture to The Fantasticks, which Mr. Boswell played Fantasickally. The show order worked really well and everyone knew their stuff. They’re a really good group. Boswell sang our missing guest’s song and Guy Haines was there to do Evening Star. After the stumble-through I kept two performers – one I asked to simplify one of her songs. The other I had to really discuss what kind of show we do and the way in which it runs best. That performer got what I was saying right away and we ran those three numbers with what I was asking for and they sounded 1000 percent better. Then Melody, her mom, and I went over to the Eclectic CafĂ© and had dinner. I had my usual linguini salsiccia, which wasn’t as good as it usually is. I left half the sausage because it was very chunky and not that good. The pasta and sauce were good, though. After that, I came home.

Since it was too late to watch a motion picture, I just did stuff on the computer, had a couple of telephonic calls, and answered e-mails. One e-mail was from the guy who’s overseeing the authoring of the Blu and Ray of Nudie Musical and he wrote to tell me he thought the restoration looked “amazing.” He’s the first one to actually see it and he had the DVD to compare it to and it was great to hear that.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I need to get these here notes posted early so I can get a good night’s beauty sleep.

Today, the Handy Man will be back to complete his work. I shall try to do the four-mile jog early, then I’ll do errands and whatnot, hopefully pick up a package or three, and then get ready for sound check. We’ll do our sound check, then I’ll have a small Caesar salad, after which we’ll return to the Gardenia, where I will have my usual prosciutto and melon and some tomatoes. Then it’s show time. After the show, I’m sure the usual few will go out for a snack. Please send excellent vibes and xylophones for my vocal chords – I need to be strong tonight – lots of talking and, of course, a song to be sung, since I’ve heard a rumor Guy Haines may not make it in time if his tennis game goes late.

Tomorrow, we have a Melody rehearsal at Vitello’s at noon. Also, my engineer will be there because I’ve decided to record the show. I’m not sure we’ll release it, but her parents thought it would be great to have high quality audio clips so we’ll do it, and if I’m really happy we may just release it on Kritzerland. I’m really hoping I can take the afternoon and evening to relax, but we still have one damn role to cast for the New York shoot and we have to get that done so they have enough time to learn what they need to.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do the four-mile jog, do errands and whatnot, pick up packages, do a sound check and do a show. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any old question you like and we get to give any old answer we like. So, let’s have loads of lovely questions and loads of lovely answers and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, after which I shall hopefully wake up with a nice, strong, healthy voice.
