OY AND VEY AND A HAPPY ROSH HASHANAH

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, oy and vey, that is all I have to say at this time. Oy and vey. I’m wondering when it is that I’m actually supposed to catch up on sleep. I simply do not know when it is. For example, it was not yesterday. For example, it will not be today. For example, it will not be tomorrow, nor Friday, nor the weekend, nor Monday – perhaps next Tuesday and Wednesday. Oy and vey and if I may add vey and oy. I get up, I do, I go, I go, I do and the day and evening are suddenly over and here I sit writing these here notes once again. Well, enough whining or, as the English say, enough whinging.

Yesterday was a day in which things were done – many, many things. I’m having trouble remembering what any of them were, but I know things were done. Well, let’s break it down, shall we. I got up. I know that happened and too damned early if you ask me, not that you did. I answered e-mails and downloaded the rest of the Nudie Musical transfer. Then I gave the master of our 100th release one more listen before signing off on it – it’s really spectacularly beautiful. I listened to some of Nudie Musical and it sounds better than the previous CD that came with the DVD but there are a couple of things I’m not thrilled with – unfortunately, they are inherent in the mix and I’m not sure what we can really do about it. The Varese Sarabande LP release was mixed by someone other than myself and I was never happy with it. I think I was working when it was done, but I should never have allowed it. They used a wrong vocal take on the beginning of the title song – it’s not what’s in the film, which is really annoying. Those were the tapes we used to do the first CD release and we used the first CD release to do the second CD release that came with the DVD. But prior to the Varese LP there were two other LPs, both privately pressed. The second one was, for me, the best mixed – I was there, and it sounds pretty good. Unfortunately, those tapes are lost and if we were to use any of it we’d have to master from LP – I’m not against that, however, as our mastering guy does amazing LP transfers that you’d never know were LP transfers. So, I made him copies of some of those mixes just for him to hear. He hasn’t gotten back to me yet, but the shocking thing was that my copy of that LP was in really ratty shape. Fortunately, a collector friend who only lives five minutes from here has a pristine copy, so I’ll transfer that and we’ll see if we want to use any of those tracks. I know of at least three that are better than what was on the Varese LP.

Then I did the four-mile jog, after which I went and had some matzo brei and toast. Then I went to the mail place, where there were a LOT of packages – most of which were the Nudie Musical Blu and Rays, so we now have all our copies. Those who order just the Blu and Ray will get theirs shipped pretty quickly (as will the Kickstarter folks – those will probably go out Thursday) – those who order the combo of CD and Blu will have to wait two more weeks, which is when we’ll have the CD. Still, it will be way ahead of the November 5th street date.

Then I came home, did some blurb writing, prepared the eBlast for the Nudie release, which is happening concurrently with posting these here notes, sent out press releases for Nudie and the web series, and then it was time for rehearsal. That went fairly well. Our pianist hasn’t really had the time to properly prepare, despite having had the music for almost three weeks. He’s just been incredibly busy. He didn’t want to hear any comments about problems, but I could not not say something because I wanted him to be very sure about where the real problem areas were, where the chords weren’t what they should be on paper and that we had to get that stuff to be like it is on the CD. He got very snippy (overtired, which he admitted), but I just said what I had to say and made sure he knew I wasn’t yelling at him. As he said, he’s so tired and cranky that if I’d come up and whispered sweetly in his ear he’d have thought it was yelling. This is a very tough show for Alet and I just want everything to be right for her. We had a couple of people watching tonight, and I’m glad we did, because it let her get some stuff out of her system that wasn’t working – and I gave lots of notes. She’s such a wonderful singer and actress, and she’s going to be absolutely amazing come next week.

After, a few of us went to Jerry’s Deli, where we ate some food. Since I’d had my eggs and toast, I just had a small dinner salad with ranch dressing. After that I came home, watched a little of the new Blu and Ray of Ben and Hur and then it was time to write these here notes. Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I have to announce the Blu and CD of Nudie at midnight, then I must try and get as much beauty sleep as I can before arising at eight to ship CDs.

Today, we must ship out a LOT of Thelma & Louise CDs – a LOT of them, in fact, ALL of them. Then we’ll figure out how best to ship t-shirts and Blu and Rays to the Kickstarter folks. Then I have a ton of errands and whatnot to do, a four-mile jog to do, and then must go to the editing room to do our final sound tweaks. Then tomorrow they make all the Quick Time files for me and those three episodes are put to bed and ready to air. I’m sure I’ll find time to eat something, and hopefully I’ll be printing out some nice orders for Nudie.

Tomorrow, I have to prepare for my trip and we have a rehearsal in the evening again. I will be on my way to Chicago early Friday morning, I’ll check into the hotel, use their treadmill, then hopefully join Druxy for dinner. Then, of course, the weekend is the signing show.

Let’s all put on our pointy party hats and our colored tights and pantaloons, let’s all break out the cheese slices and the ham chunks, let’s dance the Hora or the Monkey because today is the birthday of dear reader JohnG. So, let’s give a big haineshisway.com birthday cheer to dear reader JohnG. On the count of three: One, two, three – A BIG HAINESHISWAY.COM BIRTHDAY CHEER TO DEAR READER JOHNG!!!

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, ship CDs, do the four-mile jog, hopefully pick up some packages, do sound tweaks, and eat. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any old question you like and we get to give any old answer we like. So, let’s have loads of lovely questions and loads of lovely answers and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, and hope and pray that all of our Jewish friends (including my very own self) have a wonderfully wonderful Jewish New Year or, as we like to call it, Rosh Hashanah.
