A HAZE OF A DAZE AND A WHALE OF A TALE

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, it’s only Tuesday and already I’m exhausted. But, by the time I arise on this day I shan’t be exhausted because who has time to be exhausted. There was, at some point yesterday, a moment when I just stood in the middle of the room, not going left, not going right – oh, a Follies reference. I was in a haze of a daze, which is not a whale of a tale or even a wail of a tail. And I said to myself, “Myself, I cannot do anything else.” Myself replied, “Oh stop being a twit, you twit.” And that was that. I got a new burst of energy and finished what I needed to finish. Exactly what that was I have no idea.

I did get eight and a half hours of sleep, so that was nice. I got up, answered e-mails, and then did the four-mile jog. The helper came over and picked up some invoices, and then I went out and did some errands and whatnot. I picked up no packages and an important envelope. I did some banking and then came home. I ate two tuna fish sandwiches for my meal o’ the day. The editor came by and picked up the hard drive and will begin getting the footage into his editing program and synching up the sound. That will take a few days and then he’ll begin cutting. I had a very nice chat with Mr. Richard M. Sherman, who will be writing a little something for our next release, and he also agreed to sign 100 booklets for the first 100 people who order the CD. He also said he’s going to try and make the next Gardenia show, which would be very nice.

I got the Gardenia event posted on Facebook, and then Kevin Symons, who’ll be appearing at the Gardenia, came by and got his music and CD, as did Alet. Shannon Warne, who’s just joined our merry troupe, will be by today. Then I decided to take a big ol’ box of DVDs I don’t need anymore over to Amoeba. They gave me quite a good deal, and I got some goodies with my credit. I then came home and sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I finished watching The Empire Strikes Back. I don’t think I’d actually watched the DVD, which means I hadn’t really seen the film in its entirety since it came out. It has a good script (co-written by Lawrence Kasdan), and is well directed by Irvin Kershner, although what it was in Mr. Kershner’s filmography that would have led Mr. Lucas that he’d be a good person to helm a Star Wars sequel is anyone’s guess. The film is well paced, has great John Williams music, some good and necessary humor, and the chemistry of the three leads is what makes the whole thing work so well – that and the presence of James Earl Jones’s Darth Vader voice. The last twenty minutes really does play like a Saturday afternoon serial of old. The transfer, which, as I’ve mentioned, has been getting knocks, is terrific – the knocks are completely unwarranted and are coming from people whose only knowledge of these films is from previous home video releases. I then began watching Return Of The Jedi, and within three minutes you know exactly what the problem is – it’s suddenly creature-land and every creature drools and is gross and it goes on and on and on – the entire Jabba the Hutt sequence, for me, is pretty excruciating – and it’s thirty-something minutes long. I don’t remember caring for what follows that either, but then I definitely haven’t seen this since it came out.

After my viewing, I had a telephonic call, and I’m slowly continuing my cleaning of rooms and moving stuff out to the garage. I also went to Gelson’s and bought some apples. I cut two of them into slices and ate bites of each, but they were just awful tasting, so I threw the whole batch in the trash. I was happy to see another rave review for the Nudie Musical Blu and Ray, and some more nice comments on one of the boards. Someone will be reviewing it at the Home Theatre Forum – when I mentioned that MattH knew the film, I was told he was just too busy to review it. Apparently he’s still holding whatever grudge caused him to leave this here site – which I believe was my not liking Lost as much as I should have and having the temerity to criticize it when I thought it was bad. It’s a shame this stuff happens, but I guess there’s nothing to be done about it.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I must get these here notes posted and get my beauty sleep so I will not be in a haze of a daze.

Today, I shall get up, do the four-mile jog, then the helper is coming over to take back some tapes to the MGM vaults and to deliver a CDR to Richard Sherman, who wants to hear some stuff before writing his little thing he’ll be writing. Then Shannon Warne will be picking up music and CD, and I also have errands and whatnot to do, hopefully some packages to pick up, some more banking to do, a telephonic conversation to have, and something amusing to eat – perhaps even a slaw dog at Soul Dog if I’m feeling my oats. Or maybe I’ll just eat the damn oats.

Tomorrow, I think I have some dinner to do, and just more writing and errands and proofing and doing and going. Not sure what the weekend holds, but I suppose we’ll find out.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do the four-mile jog, I must have tapes returned and a CD delivered, I must do banking, I must hopefully pick up packages and I must eat. Today’s topic of discussion: Since our chicken and waffles discussion was so nice, why don’t we talk about another of my all-time favorite foods – potatoes. I love practically any kind of potato and I’ve had them in all sorts of ways. So, what are your favorite potato concoctions, what is the single best potato dish you’ve ever eaten, and what is your favorite potato concoction to make? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, after which I shall arise with no trace of a haze of a daze and that’s no whale of a tale.
