November 23, 2011:

THAT WILL BE THAT

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, once again I must be up very early, this time because the Melodyland CDs are arriving and I have to get those shipped out. The helper is away for Thanksgiving, but she’s prepared all the packages, so I just have to put the CDs inside and that will be that. So, I must write these here notes in a hurry and that will be that, which is better than that being this or those. I’d thought of something really fun to write about in these here notes and meant to write it down so I would not forget, but, of course, I forgot to write it down and I have indeed forgotten. Perhaps it will come back to me, from the song of the same name.

Yesterday, I was up at six, announced our new title, and went directly back to bed. I fell back asleep around seven and got back up at nine. So, I think I somehow managed to get close to eight hours of sleep. I then did the four-mile jog, after which I had some lunch with the Outside The Box editor. He gave me our two hard-drives, one of which has the new three episodes, locked and ready to go when they go up. I got all that on my computer, then picked up some packages, but not the errant and truant one, which I hope will finally arrive this day. After that, I printed out some orders, did some errands and whatnot, and then it was time to be on my way to LACC.

I got there at four and recorded our pre-show announcement, which has one amusing thing in it. Then I sat in the theater and watched the lighting guy building cues. Then our cast arrived and we began our final run-through until next Monday’s tech. Every show I’ve ever done as an actor and as a director has had a run-through such as we had last evening. It was, for the most part, very rough and I’m afraid I led the way. I started very strongly, but because I’d decided that I would do the second half of my opening speech by heart, that’s all I was thinking about and so I just fumfered all sorts of lines in the first half. So, the idea to do the second half by heart is scotched and I will do it as I was doing it before, at my seat. I still know it pretty well, but I’ll have the script there, just in case. The entire run-through was plagued by forgotten lyrics – it was crazy and I basically said I hoped they’d all gotten it out of their system, because we have no time from here on in to be worrying about that stuff. Some numbers went very well, and some of the rough lighting looked good. Our spot operator was getting used to where everyone was going and he did a good job. Sound was nowhere in evidence, so I still have no idea if these “opera” mics are going to do the job and I won’t have any idea until Monday’s tech. I’m hoping that during the cue-to-cue I’ll be able to hear what it’s going to be like. The patter is starting to really feel comfortable to me, and therefore I’m finally starting to have fun with it and be loose with it. There’s one bit of audience participation that I think will be funny – not real participation, I just ask someone for a word and that word will obviously change at each performance and that will be fun for me to play off. The curtain call is blocked and looks good, so if we can just get the tech stuff done tonight, I’m hoping that Monday can go smoothly. I’ve already warned the cast that they must drill songs and staging every day of this vacation and I’ve also warned them that if they come in rough on Monday, the cuddly and lovable BK they all know will be nowhere in evidence.

After rehearsal, I was just too tired to go out and eat, so I stopped at Gelson’s and got a cucumber roll, a tiny thing of chicken pasta, and some cottage cheese (low-fat). I caught up on e-mails and web doings and that was that, which was par for the course with that.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I’m going to post these here notes early and get to bed so I get enough of my beauty sleep.

Today, I have to ship out CDs, I have to do the four-mile jog, I have to hopefully pick up some packages including the one that’s now VERY errant and truant, I have to do errands and whatnot and pay some bills, and then I have to go to LACC for the building of light cues (we’ll have a few of the cast members there to walk the show) – that way, I can give my two cents as we go and he can add or subtract whatever I like. I’ve already asked for a couple of different kinds of looks, and he’s trying to accommodate them.

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving and thanks I give that it is Thanksgiving, for that means sleeping in, doing a four-mile jog, and then going to a Thanksgiving dinner at one at the home of Melody and folks. I’d received two other invites (I normally go to Barry Pearl’s), but for several reasons I opted for Melody’s – I think that’s where I’ll do the most good this year. The rest of the long weekend will be for relaxing, watching motion pictures, relaxing, catching up on things that involve the next Gardenia show, and on Sunday we’re supposed to have a brief rehearsal for the Gardenia show – just a couple of our people at that – the rest are getting together with our MD next week, when I’m at rehearsal.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, ship CDs, do the four-mile jog, hopefully pick up a few packages including the errant and truant one, do errands and whatnot, pay bills, and then have a lighting walk-through. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you dear readers get to ask me or any dear reader any old question you like and we get to give any old answer we like. So, let’s have loads of lovely questions and loads of lovely answers and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland and that will be that. I’m also wondering if any of our dear readers are actually coming in to see the LACC show. That sure would be nice, but no one has said boo about it.
