THE NIGHT OF THE LIVING DO

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I have sliced, diced, and chopped all ingredients for the famous spaghetti sauce – I was a living BK-o-Matic, merrily chopping, slicing, and dicing last night instead of watching a motion picture. I just thought it would really be nice for a change to do everything last night so that all I have to do today is throw it all in the pot and cook it. I also made the tuna pasta salad, so I really won’t need to do anything until about two o’clock. The best thing I did this year for the Do was buy that huge three-pound bag of peeled garlic cloves – all fresh, but peeled. That’s the worst part for me, the peeling of the garlic so not having to do the peeling of the garlic was a major boon (noob, spelled backwards). All I had to do was dice ten cloves. So, a fun way to spend an evening – reeking of garlic, weeping from onions, and being annoyed by mushrooms.

Prior to that I had an almost work-free day and that was quite pleasantly pleasant. I got up at ten, the helper arrived to do the last few invoices she could and now Kritzerland is closed until January 2nd. I did the four-mile jog (quicker than usual), then went and had some bacon, eggs, and toast, along with a few onion rings. After that, I came home and three singers arrived to get their music. Whilst waiting for them, I did sneak in a little work on the computer and at the piano. Then I picked up a few packages (ironically a package shipped on Wednesday was here, but a package from the same person shipped on Tuesday was not here – go know) and no important envelope, then bought a couple of gifts. I remember even six or seven years ago buying at least twenty presents every year, but now it’s only a handful. Then I came back home and sat on my couch like so much fish.

Just before all the slicing and dicing and chopping and making I watched another Maigret movie on DVD. This one was quite good – very atmospheric (rain falling for the entirety of the movie), Maigret having to solve a murder while being laid up with the flu, and, as always, the excellent performances. It was fun to see actor Daniel Gelin as a crusty old man. I remember him vividly from when I saw Hitchcock’s The Man Who Knew Too Much as a child – he played the guy who takes James Stewart and Doris Day to dinner, then gets stabbed in the back in an Arab costume the next day.
After that, you know what happened. And I know what happened. In fact, the only people who don’t know what happened are the people who don’t read this here site, and they can just be in the dark, frankly and even georgely. What care I for people who don’t read this here site? In fact, what care I for tinsel and glamour or even glamour and tinsel?

I forgot to mention that I finished cleaning and organizing and the home environment looks rather neat and tidy and feels very warm and cozy, which is the way we like it for the Do. Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I must get a good night’s beauty sleep for there is a lot o’ cookin’ to do today and then a Do to do.

Today, of course, is the Day Of The Do. The Do, of course, is not during the Day, so the actual Do is in the evening and should therefore be called the Night Of The Do. The Day Of The Do will be spent in making the famous spaghetti sauce and I’ll buy one more little gift, hopefully pick up some packages and an important envelope, pay some Kritzerland bills, and I’ll probably watch Scrooge or It’s A Wonderful Life or just play Christmas music. And then we’ll do the Do and then the Do will be done.

Tomorrow is Christmas, and I shall open the one present I’ve received this year (besides my daughter’s wonderful two cherry loaves). Then I’ll spend a warm and cozy day eating, watching and relaxing. I’ve been invited to a screening in the evening of Hugo and some other new film – I may go. Next week is a week off, although I will continue to make notes for the new book and get my head in the book-writing mode. I’ll also begin writing the last three episodes of season two of Outside The Box. And I’ll do liner notes for the January Kritzerland releases. I may forego any announcements till the middle of the month and then do two at once. I think it might be easier that way, then we’ll go back to our usual way. I’ll also be taking a look back at the year I like to call 2011.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must Do the things I Do, I must, for example, do the four-mile jog, I must buy one last gift, I must make the famous spaghetti sauce, I must hopefully pick up packages and an important envelope, and I must prepare myself for the Night Of The Do. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your all-time favorite Christmas-themed motion pictures? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, where I shall dream of sugar plum fairies and the Night Of The Do.
