THE SMELL OF HONEYSUCKLE

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, it was a lazy kind of Saturday. Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, it was a lazy kind of Saturday. The sky was gray, with the smell of honeysuckle mingling with the first drops of rain. A car made its way down the street, stopped in front of one of those Spanish houses in Koreatown. I wondered if there were Korean houses in Spanishtown, but before I could wonder too much, a gunshot rang out. I heard the bullet do the Charleston as it passed my head. Before I had a chance to react, the car sped off down towards Western, tires screeching like my landlady when I’m late with the rent. What am I, Raymond Chandler all of a sudden? Shouldn’t I be writing some notes instead of making like a Marlowe mystery?

In any case, it was a lazy kind of Saturday. I was awakened by the ringing not of the telephonic device but of the doorbell, when she of the Evil Eye arrived at nine o’clock. I did the four-mile jog and it was a good thing I got it done early because soon thereafter it began to rain. The smell of honeysuckle did the dance of the seven veils with the rain – oh, sorry, my inner Chandler reared its ugly little head again. I did some errands, took my little Hitchcock signed note to Billy Wilder to the framers, and then picked up no packages and no important envelope, which I later found out hadn’t been mailed until Thursday, which made me very, very angry. So, I won’t get that until Tuesday or Wednesday, which is not good and I let the sender know just how not good that is. I was incensed and the smell of honeysuckle trickled at the corners of my nostrils, which were flared in anger. After that, I did some work at the piano (which I must have tuned this week), wrote the blurb for our two new releases and got all that stuff prepped for Monday morning’s announcement (announcing here for you dear readers right after these here notes go up), and got everything ready for the new episode of Outside The Box, which will also go up right after these here notes go up. I was going to put up the Andy and Alet Taylor episode, but I changed my mind at the last minute and am putting up the Gregory Harrison episode instead. Andy and Alet will follow that one. I just felt the Gregory Harrison episode had a little more zing to it, but I’m still waffling even as I write this. Also, Gregory is very well known and that’s a consideration, too.

After that, Melody and her folks came and gathered me up and took me for a belated birthday dinner to Casa Vega. I do love that jernt and the food, as always, was yummilicious in the extreme and I ate way too much of it – thank goodness I did the four-mile jog. We laughed and laughed and just when we thought we could laugh no more, we laughed again. It was a lovelier than lovely belated birthday dinner. I then came home and sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched another Maigret movie on DVD – an excellent one with, as always, a wonderful cast of French players. One of the reasons I enjoy these so much is the attention to detail in the costumes and production design – they all take place in the 1950s and they look stylish and wonderful. However, in the last one I watched, the one that all took place aboard a train, they made the only error that I’ve ever caught and I have to say it was not only a whopper but really stupid. Someone either wasn’t paying attention or just didn’t think anyone would ever notice. One of the key props in the episode was an oversized book of movie posters, in which is hidden a lot of money (taped to pages) and a very rare painting on canvas by a famous artist (can’t remember which, but one of the masters). That’s all fine save for one thing – there were no books about movie posters published in the 1950s, let alone 1953. Not only that, the book they used has a really recognizable cover – it’s by John Kobal and was the first such book ever published – the problem being, of course, that it wasn’t published in 1953, it was published in 1974. And, as they flip through its pages, of course, you catch an occasional glimpse of a post-1953 poster. I’m sure they could have found a different oversized book – the fact that it was movie posters was not germane to the plot anyway. But I do love these movies and am enjoying going through box set number two.

Before we leave this here page, episode four of Outside The Box is now up and running. So, check it out, share it, “like” it and do the things that you do. http://youtu.be/Fkr3QAc2JDE

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I must get these here notes posted, upload a video, and post our new releases here.

Today, I shall hopefully awaken from a good night’s beauty sleep, after which I’ll go hear some mixes from an upcoming Kritzerland project. I will also do the four-mile jog, eat something light but amusing, and relax and watch some motion pictures.

Tomorrow, there are a bunch of little things to do, hopefully some packages to pick up and hopefully an important envelope, a meeting or two, and maybe a meal – can’t remember, but I know I’ve asked people to remind me if I’ve booked anything. The rest of the week is mine all mine and I shall make the most of it.

Let’s all put on our pointy party hats and our colored tights and pantaloons, let’s all break out the cheese slices and the ham chunks, let’s all dance the Hora or the Wah-Watusi because today we have two count them two birthdays to celebrate. The first birthday to celebrate belongs to dear reader PennyO. So, let’s give a big haineshisway.com birthday cheer to the lovelier than lovely dear reader PennyO. On the count of three: One, two, three – A BIG HAINESHISWAY.COM BIRTHDAY CHEER TO THE LOVELIER THAN LOVELY DEAR READER PENNYO!!!

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do the four-mile jog, hear mixes, eat something light, and relax and watch motion pictures. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s free-for-all day, the day in which you dear readers get to make with the topics and we all get to post about them. So, let’s have loads of lovely topics and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, where the smell of honeysuckle will wend its way into my dreams.
