WHEN I’M SIXTY-FOUR

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I am now a Beatles song. Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, I, BK, am now a Beatles song, thanks to turning sixty-four this very day. But more about that later.

Kritzerland at the Gardenia 16 was a truly fun evening – packed house, and a really feel good show in every way. And the Promises, Promises pit singers reunion was beyond fun – to watch these gals strut their stuff through Turkey Lurkey Time forty years later was not only grand fun but very touching. For the record, they were Kelly Britt, Ilene Graff, Margot Hanson, and Ilona Simon-Muller. The rest of the show went very smoothly and the singers all did great – there was only one lyric flub in the whole show and it was dealt with quickly and effortlessly. Little Lucy Taylor stopped the show as she did last year with “That’s What I Want For Christmas.” Melody was stellar with her two numbers, and Kim Huber, Zachary Ford, Dan Callaway, Juliana, and Alet were all terrific. All of our LACC gals were there, as were two of the guys from Lost and Unsung. And everyone sang me Happy Birthday at the end of the show – a total surprise and a delightfully delightful one.

Prior to that, the day began okay, although I got up a little earlier than I’d have liked to. I did some work on the computer, did the four-mile jog, had a couple of telephonic calls, an amusing e-mail volley (at times it’s really fun to watch people flail like beached whales), and then the helper came over and picked up some invoices. Then I had to do some banking and pick up mail so I went to the motor car and discovered the battery dead as a doornail. That was more than a little annoying as the car is barely two years old and only has 13,000 miles on it – the battery should last six or seven years. That, and the fact that I just had the car serviced two weeks ago – they don’t check these things? The fact is, when I had the tire replaced last week at a local gas station they told me the battery sounded weak – I didn’t believe them because I’d, you know, just had the car serviced. So, I looked for my Auto Club card and could not find it anywhere – most irritating. I had to call and they e-mailed me a temporary card and are sending a replacement. Twenty minutes later the guy showed up and jump-started the car – he suggested I go to the dealer since the battery was still under warranty – I told him I had no time to do so, that I had to do two errands and since I’d just lost an hour I was going to be late to the sound check if I didn’t get going right then. So, I had him put in a new battery and that was that. When I got back home I called the Infiniti service department and they agreed it was totally outrageous that the battery would have gone this soon. I told them that because of time constraints and work I’d had to just have the guy replace it but that I fully expected to be reimbursed the hundred bucks. He didn’t think it was going to be a problem, although it has to be cleared first and they’ll call me today to tell me how we go about getting the reimbursement.

I had to hurry and do everything – banked, picked up one package, and then got ready to go. I made it to the Gardenia with about five minutes to spare. We had our sound check, then I had a Caesar salad at Pomodoro, then it was back to the club, where I had my usual appetizer of prosciutto and melon. Then it was show time.

After the show, I was starving, but no one was available to go grab a bite, so I went to a late-night Subway and got a spicy Eyetalian sandwich – that was excellent and hit the spot. And there you have all of it.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I must get a good night’s beauty sleep and, of course, as I type these here notes I am now a year older than I was yesterday.

Today is my very own birthday and my strong and hopeful birthday wish is that the next year is filled with health, wealth, happiness, creativity, and all things bright and beautiful. So it is written, so let it be done. I shall be lazy, although I do have to begin two sets of liner notes. Then I will do the four-mile jog, I will hopefully pick up some packages, and then I have a three o’clock meeting at the House Of Pies. After that, it’s back home and I’m being taken out for a birthday dinner, so that should be nice.

Tomorrow, I have a lunch with Jose at Musso and Frank, then a meeting with the fellow who runs the Sunday shows at Vitello’s, where the next three Kritzerland shows will take place – we have to work out the details and I’ll explain why the change of venue for these shows in tomorrow’s notes. The weekend there’s stuff happening but I haven’t written it down so hopefully someone will remind me or I’ll remember.

Next week, I’m working for four hours each day with a singer from New York – this happened through Lanny Meyers, who’s playing for her. It pays and I’m told she’s very good, so I’m hoping it will be fun.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do the four-mile jog, begin two sets of liner notes, hopefully pick up some packages, have a meeting, and have a birthday dinner – and hopefully have a year that is filled with health, wealth, happiness, creativity, and all things bright and beautiful. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite Yuletide songs – both popular and Christmas carols? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland one year older. And I’m happy and proud to say that year is sixty-four.
