JUDGING

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, Sunday, a day of rest, was not exactly a day of rest. It was, in fact, a day of doing and judging and writing and doing and writing and doing. I was up at eight-thirty and finessing. I finessed right up until I had to leave to judge a singing contest at Vitello’s. This is the sixth year of this contest – I judged the first one of these. The event is called LA’s Next Great Stage Star and is put on by Michael Sterling. My fellow judges were an agent, the artistic director of Musical Theatre West, and the man who runs the Candlelight Dinner Theatre (I think that’s what it’s called). This contest goes on for some weeks – I think this is the second of those weeks.

I was actually very impressed with the quality of voices. We heard twenty singers. We had to critique them after each sang, and interestingly, are critiques tended to all focus on the same things – connecting with an audience, connecting with the song, building a song, and interpreting a song. There were two of the singers that I thought were really good and I may use one of them in an upcoming Kritzerland show. It was nice to see our two Lost and Unsung boys in the contest, but I showed no favoritism. We had to vote on vocal quality, personality, and presence. It lasted about two hours and I’ll be back to judge the finals in February.

After we were done, I went directly home and began the writing of the new pages. I wrote about ten and then went and had a chopped salad and some sweet potato fries. After that, it was back home, where I wrote another ten pages. At that point, I had to sit on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched another Maigret movie. This was the earliest one I’ve seen, from 1993. It was most interesting as the first episode of the almost thirty that I’ve seen that featured Mrs. Maigret. Usually we only see Maigret talking to her on the phone in the later episodes, and we never hear or see her. I gather she did a handful of these early episodes. This is the one I cared for least – the story wasn’t compelling, and it felt like they were still feeling their way with the character of Maigret. It was shot very well and all that, but of all the ones I’ve seen, it really was my least favorite.

Then I pulled out all my 1997 and 1998 CDs, figured out the release dates, and then even though I hadn’t intended to, I wrote another batch of pages, so for tomorrow’s writing, I’m ten pages ahead, so I might actually be able to finish early and then have the afternoon off to gather up the music for the next Kritzerland show and to cast the show and figure out the songs because we’re now only two and a half weeks away. Oy and vey.

Then I began the upload of the last episode of of season one’s Outside the Box. You can find it, as always, on our channel at www.youtube.com/outsidetheboxseries. If you like it, share it on Facebook, Twitter it, tell your friends about it, and “like” it.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because it’s late and I’m really tired and need a good night’s beauty sleep.

Today, I shall finesse, then print out pages and bring them to muse Margaret, who I really hope will like then, and then I’ll write at least ten pages, if not a few more. Then I’ll go to the storage facility and pull the music for the Kritzerland show, after which I’ll get it Xeroxed. I’ll finish choosing the songs and figure out who the last two cast members will be. Then I will hopefully pick up some packages, and then I’ll try to relax a little.

Tomorrow will be a heavy writing day, so will Wednesday, Wednesday night I’m seeing The Artist at the DGA, and then it’s just a whole lot more writing.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, finesse, print out and deliver pages, write, eat, pull music, Xerox music, cast, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: What are the best french fries and onion rings you’ve ever eaten? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I post our new episode and then hit the road to dreamland.
