THE LONE RANGER

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, today is a holiday, namely President’s Day. I just thought I’d pass that information along. Of course, this means no USPS and no banking, but I do believe UPS and other mail services do deliver today. But why am I talking about today when I haven’t talked about yesterday? One simply cannot talk about today without having first spoken of yesterday because that would be unseemly. So, let us speak of those thrilling days of yesteryear. Hi-ho, Silver, away, it’s The Lone Ranger. I just went to the Lone Ranger place, in case you hadn’t noticed. Did you know, for example, that Tonto spelled backwards is Otnot?

Yesterday, of which we are speaking, was a day. I got up late, I was lazier than lazy, I had a couple of visitors, and then I went to eat. It was one-thirty. I went to the Studio CafĂ©. Jammed. I went to Jerry’s Deli. Jammed, lines out the door. I went to Art’s Deli. Jammed, lines out the door. I drove by about five other restaurants, same story. If I’d felt like driving to either North Hollywood or Burbank I would have had no trouble getting in anywhere at that hour – this is strictly a Studio City thing and strictly from hunger, if you ask me. So, annoyed, I went and got a Subway Club and said to HELL with it. I came home, sat on my couch like so much fish, ate my foot-long Subway Club and watched the remaining three episodes of Downton Abbey.

Yesterday, I watched the remaining three episodes of Downton Abbey, season one. I have to say, this is the best show I’ve seen since The Sopranos, and frankly it’s better – more consistent. I find it very moving when a show is this well put together, with interesting and well developed characters, good writing and good plots, great performances, and good direction. It’s a beautiful show to look at – none of that yellow/brown crap that today’s filmmakers are so in love with – this has rich, lush color, rather like Technicolor. Of course, everyone has their favorite characters – mine are the various ladies’ maids, especially the one who’s in love, and the one who wants to better herself. But they’re all wonderful characters. Of course, I hate the villains, but only because they are acted so well. The three sisters are great, and Elizabeth McGovern is just fantastic casting, a wonderful performance. The fellow who plays her husband is also terrific. And then there’s Maggie Smith. I laughed out loud at her line readings – no one can do withering like Maggie Smith, and no one can wrap their mouths around a line like Maggie Smith. She’s a one-off, and a treasure. I was also quite taken with the music. Season two is on its way to me and the box does say UK versions and it does include the Christmas special. Most of the season two comments I’ve read have been very favorable, with only a couple of naysayers, but I’m very much looking forward to spending more time with this wonderful show.

After I finished, I was once again lazy. I listened to music, did the event page for the new Kritzerland show, and answered a few e-mails. I also had a couple of tortillas with cheese as a snack.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I’m hoping for another good night’s beauty sleep. I’m finally starting to feel like I’ve caught up on my sleep and feel refreshed.

Today, I am hopefully hoping that Mr. Grant Geissman and I will be working on the book. Please send excellent vibes and xylophones for him not to crap out on me again. I really want to get this done. Other than that, I’ll eat, relax, and watch a motion picture, but I truly hope that we’ll get at least three hours of work in today.

Tomorrow and the rest of the week will be writing liner notes, having meetings and meals, prepping the new releases, and writing a contextual commentary for the Kritzerland show.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, hopefully work on the book, I must eat, I must hopefully pick up a package or two, I must relax and I must watch a motion picture. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s President’s Day – who were and are your all-time favorite Presidents, from olden times to new. Not looking for political discussions, and there’s no need to temper your choices. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, where I shall hopefully dream less odd dreams than the previous night. And so, hi-ho Silver, away!
