HOOKED ON A DANISH

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, to be frank or perhaps george, I’m hooked on a Danish. I have a Danish addiction right now. I’ve got a Danish on my back. I’m speaking of the original Danish version of the AMC show The Killing. I managed to watch five episodes last night – I simply could not stop. It’s mesmerizing, very well plotted, and every episode one has to shift one’s feelings to a new potential suspect. Each episode of the show takes place in a day and the first season is twenty episodes or twenty days. I’m now halfway through and we’ve already had five or six perfectly plausible suspects, none of whom, at this point, have turned out to be the killer. In episode ten, we’re on to a new suspect, but then we’ve got ten episodes to go, so who knows how this will all end or how many more roads we’re going to go down, but if they’re all as fascinating and well done as the previous roads, then I will be very happy. I’m very interested to compare this to the American AMC version and I’ll be doing so next week, I think. I could probably just stay up for the next ten hours and finish the thing, that’s how hooked I am. But then again, I was up at six in the morning to announce our new titles and I’m really overtired now.

After announcing, I went back to bed for an hour, but could have slept another three if only the person with whom I was having my morning meeting had told me she was not going to be able to get there because of car problems. But I got back up at about eight only to find out at around ten-fifteen that the meeting was pushed to this morning – so, now I have to get up early AGAIN instead of being able to sleep in and catch up. I printed out a lot of orders, then my pal David Wechter called and asked if I could meet for an early lunch and I could so we did. I hadn’t seen him since his return to LA (he was working in NY for eight months) and it was great to catch up. After that, I came home and printed out more orders and spent several hours dealing with this memorial we’re doing on Saturday.

Nobody’s been communicating with anyone so I had no idea how many people were coming, who they were, and who was on the list to speak. I finally got all that information. It looks like we’ll have over 100 people attending, and right now there are about fourteen people speaking. I’m trying to hold everyone to five minutes, not always easy when people get going but I’m being firm about it so it doesn’t turn into an endless three-hour thing. We have ninety minutes for the memorial part, then another ninety minutes for a reception after. I think we’ll actually end up with about twelve speakers, so that’s an hour right there and if we can keep to that and then the little segues all take the other thirty minutes, we’ll be fine. I’ve got to write my introduction and remarks, too. But I confirmed several people I wanted, including Miss Cindy Williams, who’ll be driving down with me. And we’ve got several other notable alums. It should be a very nice event. I don’t want it to be bathetic and weepy – this teacher would have hated that. I want it to be what I think all these things should be – not a dirge but a celebration of a life well lived (he was ninety-three when he passed).

After that, I picked up no mail and no packages, ordered a second set of little somethings to send with the book after I run out of the bigger somethings (everyone who ordered from here will get the bigger something) – I’ve had more pre-orders for this book than any other, and I may, in fact, have to order more copies if they keep coming in the way they have. Then I sat on my couch like so much fish and watched The Killing. After the fourth episode I went to Gelson’s and got a small thing of mac and cheese and a cucumber roll. Thanks to all the talk on this here site, I was mightily tempted to get some peanut butter and celery stalks, but peanut butter, even in reduced fat, is one of the most caloric foods there is. I suppose that one day I could just make two peanut butter sandwiches and have only that, I could satisfy this craving I now have. Can’t happen this week, as I have stuff every day – I really need to get back to jogging and losing weight, but I can’t find the time and I just keep eating – not crazily, but I’m not exercising so I think it just packs itself onto my bones even though I’m not really doing more than 1500 calories a day.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I must get as much beauty sleep as I possibly can.

Today, I shall have yesterday’s morning meeting, then I have some errands and whatnot to do, then I’ll hopefully pick up some packages, then I’ll do my show order and start writing the contextual commentary for the Kritzerland show, as well as my remarks for the memorial. Then I’ll try to watch an episode of The Killing before going to dinner at muse Margaret’s house. After that, I’ll probably watch another episode.

Tomorrow, I have to finish all writing, and I can actually maybe get a jog in and actually eat really lightly, before taping a two-part Broadway Radio Show with our very own Mr. Donald Feltham. I’m looking forward to that. Thursday I have an early lunch meeting and then I’m seeing a local production of Spring Awakening, then Friday is an early dinner and seeing the Callaway sisters at Pepperdine, after which we’ll be joining a friend for a little dessert. Saturday is the memorial, not sure what’s up Saturday night, and then Sunday I’m supposed to do a signing at the annual paperback show in Mission Hills. But I honestly don’t think I’ll have anything to sign as I’m completely out of There’s Mel, probably won’t have the new book (unless they get here three or four days ahead of when they’re supposed to), and don’t really want to bring the older books, although that’s what I may have to do. Since I don’t ever really sell more than one or two at that show I’m not going to lug a heavy box there.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, have a morning meeting, do errands and whatnot, hopefully pick up some packages, do a show order, write, watch, eat, and watch. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite kinds of muffins and Danish and pastry? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland where I shall hopefully not dream with subtitles.
