TOOTH AND NAIL

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I am fighting tooth and nail not to get sick and if I have anything to say about it I shall win this damn fight. I don’t really think I’m sick, I think it has to do with less sleep than I should have had, coupled with the time change and jet-lag and also being with a bunch of coughing people on a small aeroplane. I’ve been sucking down Coldeez, drinking water and other liquids, and I got a good night’s beauty sleep, nine hours to be exact. I’m also taking Alavert. Now, the real question is, have you ever fought tooth and nail, and, if so, who won? Tooth or nail or both?

Other than fighting tooth and nail not to get sick, I had a rather nice day yesterday. I got up at nine-thirty, finalized the book order, then answered e-mails and returned some telephonic calls. I went to the framers and chose the frame for the Squigs original art for the book cover – it will be ready next Tuesday. Then I had a lunch with friends over at Paty’s coffee shop. I had a small Belgian waffle, two eggs, and bacon, all very good. After lunch, I picked up no packages and one piece of mail and then came home. I procrastinated for an hour and then finally buckled down, Winsocki and wrote one set of damn liner notes. Once I got started they came pretty quickly. That took a couple of hours and then I sent those off to the Kritzerland designer. Then the musical director for the next Kritzerland show came by and picked up a CDR and a ton of sheet music. Then I sat in the Jacuzzi for about thirty minutes. Then I came in and sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched ten minutes of a motion picture on Blu and Ray entitled Rebecca, starring Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine. I have to admit, I’ve never loved this film, but I’m trying again. However, I was too antsy to get past the ten-minute mark, so I shut it off, then went to Jerry’s and got some chicken soup, which was a very good thing to do. I got it to go and I ate it at home. Feeling inspired, I then set to work on the second set of liner notes and got about 70% of the way through before having to stop to write these here notes – but I’ll either finish tonight or first thing in the morning.

I also listened to the rough mix of the STAGE benefit Sondheim show – it’s very rough around the edges and apparently it was only recorded once, so we don’t have any alternates. Therefore, some tough decisions have to be made. In one song, the singer flubs a lyric by doing the same word twice, unfortunately on a rhyme – I know that my closer personal friend, Mr. Stephen Sondheim, would not be thrilled, but do we lose an entire song because of it. At this point, I’m leaning towards losing it because the performance isn’t that hot anyway. There’s some work to be done on the blends and levels, but it will ultimately sound good, and some of the performances are fun. Plus, Michelle Nicastro does a wonderful Good Thing Going, and that’s worth the whole album.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I need another really good night’s beauty sleep, after which I hope I will awaken feeling much better. Please send excellent vibes and xylophones for feeling better, because I have no time to be sick and am fighting it tooth and nail as well as nail and tooth.

Today, I shall finish the second set of liner notes and get those to the designer. One CD is already mastered and I’m hoping the second one will be done by early next week, as we have to announce these two titles before the 21st of March. Then I have some errands and whatnot, I may try to jog if I’m feeling up to it, hopefully I’ll pick up some packages, and then I’m going to see Miss Andrea Marcovicci at the Gardenia, attending with a small group of friends.

Tomorrow, I have several things to do and more relaxing. Saturday we have a Melody rehearsal then dinner and Sunday will hopefully also be relaxing, because next week is going to be very busy. I’m also trying to set up the first book signing for early April. I’m doing the big paperback show in Mission Hills in a couple of weeks, but I’m not sure the new book will be here in time – if I get lucky it will be and that would be nice to have it there. In fact, if the books don’t arrive before that, there’s really no reason at all to do the show, as I’m completely out of There’s Mel and don’t really want to bring the other books. We shall see.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, finish liner notes, maybe jog, do errands and whatnot, hopefully pick up some packages, and then see Miss Andrea Marcovicci at the Gardenia after supping there. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite performances of Laurence Olivier? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland fighting tooth and nail to not be sick – send excellent vibes and xylophones for big health.
