FOR THE BIRDS

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I know why the caged bird sings, but I’m not telling. The caged bird told me personally why it sings but asked me not to reveal it for reasons the caged bird didn’t make entirely clear. So, I know why the caged bird sings and we’ll just leave it at that. I’m glad to know why the caged bird sings because frankly it was beginning to bug me large that the fershluganah caged bird was always singing, mostly the score to Whoop-Up. I mean, the damn bird in a cage, what has it got to sing about. If I were in a cage I not only wouldn’t sing I would be irked. And don’t get me started about the four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie. What the HELL kind of pie is that. I tried to order that pie at Four and Twenty Pies and they laughed, I tell you, they laughed and laughed and just when they thought they could laugh no more, they laughed again. What the HELL am I talking about? These here notes are for the birds, that’s all I have to say. Actually, if that’s all I had to say, these here notes would be done. I’d just pat it and prick it with a “b” and put it in the oven for baby and me. Okay, have we had enough of the birds? This bird is dead. The birds is coming.

Well, that was a complete waste of a paragraph, wasn’t it? That paragraph is just sitting there like so much fish, isn’t it? In any case, I had a rather nice day yesterday doing rather nice things. I got up earlier than I wanted to thanks to my considerate neighbors and their guests who decided to have coffee on the patio and chatter away loudly. As soon as I got up, they all went into the house and were not heard from again. Brilliant. I then did some work on the computer, went and did a few things, then came home and watched the beginning of The Poseidon Adventure on Blu and Ray – it looks very nice, and I’ll probably finish watching it today or tonight or even tonight or today. Then it was time for the Melody rehearsal. I had her run the show top to bottom without stops, so I could get a sense of how the new material was fitting in – the good news is it all works splendidly. I took a lot of notes, mostly little detail things. She’s been in incredible voice these last few months – very strong. Then we all went out for an Easter dinner at Marmalade in Sherman Oaks. I really thought Marmalade had made the turnaround because of the excellent meals I’d had at two other branches of the restaurant. Sadly, the Sherman Oaks Marmalade is still mediocre and I don’t really know why. Dishes that were excellent in Westlake Village and Malibu were mediocre here. It’s truly baffling. After that, I came home and sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched the first Wallender movie – the original Swedish series. It’s quite well done and I really like the actors and their characters. It’s not a whodunit, at least the first movie isn’t. It’s about a survivor of the Jim Jones thing at Guyana who is killing people for his so-called religious reasons. It was compelling and I’m looking forward to the rest of the movies in this first box set I got. I then watched last week’s episode of Mad Men – it was better than the tepid and boring premiere episode, but still nowhere near their best. And I find the new copy writer character to be a dud – we’ll see where it goes, but I just wish that long ago they hadn’t dispensed with Bryan Batt because he was one of the best things about the show and has been sorely missed ever since they dispensed with the character. I then watched last night’s episode, and that was better, although I still think they spend far too much time out of the office setting. The Betty stuff isn’t that interesting although the makeup is very good. I also find the character of Don and Betty’s daughter to be one of the all-time weirdest creations ever.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I must get a good night’s beauty sleep.

Today, I must really buckle down Winsocki and write those pesky liner notes. I also must finish choosing songs and then start the ordeal of getting the sheet music. We’re still waiting on confirmation from a musical director, and I’m still waiting to hear a yay or nay from an actor. I’m also still waiting for David Galligan to call and discuss act two of the Lloyd Webber show – must make whatever decisions we’re going to make and get the damn thing done and to mastering – so it looks like I may have to go to the engineer’s house tonight to make those small fixes. Hopefully I’ll pick up some packages, and I’ll also eat something VERY light but amusing.

Tomorrow I’m seeing a reading of a new musical, doing errands and whatnot and prepping the three announcements for the STAGE releases. The rest of the week is meetings, meals, seeing shows, rehearsing with Melody, seeing an opening night and attending a dinner theater’s matinee, which is guess would be called lunch theatre.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, write pesky liner notes, finish choosing songs, get music, figure out the second half of a show, hopefully pick up packages, eat, and do fixes. Today’s topic of discussion: When you were growing up, what were your favorite nursery rhymes, and which ones scared you? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland knowing why the caged bird sings but keeping it mum.
