SOMETHING TO GUSH ABOUT

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I suppose I’ll keep these here notes short as I must be up early and on my way to get the teeth cleaned by Dr. Chew – the first step, which will be followed by whatever else he needs to do. That will happen over the next week or two. What a rousing start to the notes. Such energy, such vim, such vigor! It makes me want to just gush about the day I had yesterday, and I would if there was anything to gush about. However, yesterday, while perfectly okay, was not a gushing day. There was simply no gush. I kept looking, but gush was in absentia. I got up around eleven, quite late in the morning, but that’s because I hadn’t gotten to sleep till two. A mere hour later I was at Jerry’s Deli having an omelet (a good soft food, thanks to a suggestion from this here site) and meeting with our very own Miss Juliana Hansen. If things work out, I’ll be helping her put together an act for the end of September. Today was just for talking, looking at a big song list, and just batting a few ideas around.

After that batting and the eating, I went and picked up one package, then came home. I then buckled down, Winsocki and wrote the liner notes to their completion. Curious about the film’s composer, I Googled him to find he is still with us and he seemed to also have a website. So, I wrote to him via the e-mail address listed there, only to get a response from a very nice man who is also a composer/musical supervisor who happens to have the same name. Further investigation led me to find that my composer is a professor at an overseas university – I believe he must be in his late seventies by now, but the webpage for the university seemed to be current and his e-mail address via the university was there, so I wrote him and we’ll see if I get a response. What I’m hoping for is that he’ll write a few lines about his score. If not, the notes as written will go to the designer today. By the time I finished that, it was time to shower and get ready to go to see A New Brain at Musical Theatre Guild in the Dale of Glen.

I got there about ninety minutes before show time, picked up my ticket, and then walked about aimlessly. I went to Brand Books and looked around, and then was surprised to find that a number of restaurants that have been on Brand for decades have all closed up shop. I then came back to the theater and saw scads of people I know. I had many nice conversations whilst milling about with any number of people. Then it was time for the show.

The group did a nice job with it, but, for whatever reasons, I just didn’t respond to much of it. There were a couple of very pleasing numbers, but most of it just sounded repetitious and not in a good way, and way too much like every other William Finn musical. Plus the subject matter, which was autobiographical, just seemed archly presented in that new musical theater way that I just don’t love. The actors were all fine and the show is mercifully short.

After that, I came home, had a little low-fat, low-cal ice cream and a low-fat, low-cal Stouffer’s pizza bread thing – not great, but I just needed to eat something low calorie that wasn’t sweet. So, as you can see, not exactly a day to gush about, but a perfectly adequate day with no annoyances.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I must get a good night’s beauty sleep, arise early, and have the pearly-whites cleaned and spruced up. It’s not going to be pretty – my last cleaning was way too long ago – I just kept putting it off then forgetting about it – so, I’m sure it will not be pleasant for doctor or patient thanks to the unseemly buildup of plaque and tartar sauce.

Today, I shall have Ye Olde Teethe cleaned, then I will go have something soft to eat – I want to get the meal o’ the day out of the way. I may or may not have a little meeting during lunch – I won’t know until just before I get there. After that, I will hopefully pick up some packages, then I have some work to do at home, and then I will hopefully be able to get liner notes to the designer and finish up the packaging, which then has to go in for approval. Then it’s right on to the release that will follow that. I also have six more songs to choose for the Gardenia show, then must gather up all the music, make CDRs, and get all that to our singers. I’m hoping that by evening I can relax and watch something.

Tomorrow, lots of stuff to do, people to see, things to plan, and it’s the same for the rest of the week – I found out that the STAGE CDs are actually going to arrive on Friday, a week sooner than I’d thought, so that’s good. Then Friday night is a Melody rehearsal, Saturday something is happening but I have no idea what, then Sunday is the book signing, followed by a Melody rehearsal and dinner.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, have Ye Olde Teethe cleaned, I must eat, I must hopefully pick up some packages, I must work, and I must relax. Today’s topic of discussion: When was the first time you ever remember dancing – any kind of dancing, from lessons to your first dance? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, where I will hopefully have something to gush about.
