KRITZERLAND AT STERLING’S 21

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, we had a stellar Kritzerland at Sterling’s show, our twenty-first – Kritzerland can now drink! We ended up with a decent-sized but VERY enthusiastic crowd, including our very own Pogue, who’s in LA for a visit. Also in the audience, critic Don Grigware, our very own Juliana Hansen and mum, my friend M’lisa, her hubby, and two kids, songwriter Alan Chapman (he wrote Everybody Wants to be Sondheim – which we were doing), Adryan Russ, Doug Haverty, my friend Ashley Palmer (she’s in the first Paranormal Activity movie), and young Caitlynne Medrick – Caitlynne at twelve years of age, did my song Annie at a huge contest in Canada involving thousands of contestants – and she won – she’s in LA doing some workshops so it was really fun to meet her – she’s grown into a lovely young lady of twenty-two, I believe – and lots of other nice folks. The show ran very smoothly – the opening number, Kicks, was a complete home run – on the album there’s a big tap dancing section – I was going to just cut it, but I asked Melody to come up with something, since she taps very well (watch The Miracle Worker) – she did and brought the house down. This show had a lot of really funny material and it got huge laughs. I’m happy to say the patter worked well, and all the singers did great. The boys did end up having to have lyric sheets for two of the numbers, but we made the best of it and the numbers went very well. Beth Malone killed on each of her numbers – what a talented woman she is. Jane Noseworthy sang beautifully, as always. John Massy was hilarious on all his numbers, and Damon is just a miracle of a singer and hit The Lord Will Provide out of the ballpark (or the club). Melody was her usual wonderful self – she’d been doing Mama, a Rainbow all in her head voice – I was trying to get her out of it because it wasn’t working for a lot of the song, but she really wanted to do it that way. But just before the show, at the end of the sound check, I got strong and said, “Just let me hear it in your normal Melody voice.” She obliged me and it was perfect – she knew it right away and she made that adjustment and her performance of that song was incredibly moving. And our special guest, Daisy Eagan, was absolute magic on 44 Sunsets. All accompanied by Tom Griep – I’ve already booked him for our next show, Kritzerland 22.

After the show, we hung out for a while, and then since they couldn’t accommodate us at the club so I could eat something (I only eat an artichoke pre show) a few of us walked down to the Eclectic CafĂ©, where I had their yummilicous tostada. Prior to all that I’d had a mostly relaxing day – in fact, I don’t even remember much of it. I got up around nine-thirty, did some stuff on the computer, watched two-thirds of a Wallander, unfortunately directed by the same ninny who did the terrible prior episode. Thankfully, that’s it for him, and I can only hope the final two episodes return to the show’s former style. Then I went to the club for sound check – I have to say, the sound guy there is really good and I’m now really happy with the sound of everything, even the mutant piano.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I must get a good night’s beauty sleep because today could be a day that’s not that enjoyable, depending on what happens at Dr. Chew’s.

Today, I shall try to do a jog, either pre or post Dr. Chew. I’m not sure what he’ll be doing, but if it’s taking the impression of the two teeth that are getting porcelain caps that will be fine. If he’s actually filing down the teeth, then I think he has to give me the shots of Novocain – two, because the two teeth are on opposite sides. I’m kind of hoping that happens next week rather than today. We’ll know soon. Then I’ll hopefully pick up some packages, I’ll do some work on liner notes, and then I’m seeing Beth Malone’s solo show with the Hollises (not Melody, who’ll be in acting class).

Tomorrow, I think I’m lunching with Alet Taylor, and then the rest of the week is planning the next Kritzerland show, finishing liner notes and getting the packaging off for approval, hopefully having another couple of meals with Pogue and then I think I’m also having to see a show or two.

Let’s all put on our pointy party hats and our colored tights and pantaloons, let’s all break out the cheese slices and the ham chunks, let’s all dance the Hora or the old-fashioned waltz, because today is the birthday of dear reader Danise. So, let’s give a big haineshisway.com birthday cheer to dear reader Danise. On the count of three: One, two, three – A BIG HAINESHISWAY.COM BIRTHDAY CHEER TO DEAR READER DANISE!!!

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do a jog, see Dr. Chew, hopefully pick up some packages, write, and see a show. Today’s topic of discussion: Eggs. Yes. Eggs. How do you like them cooked, what are your favorite omelets or other egg dishes, and what is the most exotic egg dish you ever ate? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland where I shall hopefully dream of lovely things.
