May 31, 2012:

THE FINAL MAY DAY

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I must write these here notes in a hurry because I must be up very early for my very early appointment with Dr. Chew. This is one where I have to have the Novocain shot, which I HATE – but if he gives me enough of the local before it, I guess I’ll endure it. Then he’ll be filing down the chipped tooth and putting a temporary crown on. Having just gotten the bill for the first won, which tops $1,000, I don’t need to be chipping any more teeth after this. But why am I talking about today when I should be talking about yesterday? Actually, there isn’t even that much to say about yesterday but since when has THAT ever stopped me from writing ad nauseum? But wait just a minute – I just realized that today is the final day of May. Yes, this day of May is the final day of May and there shall be no further days in May on account of June taking over. June is not only taking over for May but June is busting out all over about it. So, let me just say that it is my fervent hope and prayer that June will be a month filled with health, wealth, happiness, creativity, and all things bright and beautiful.

Yesterday was a day. I got up after nine hours of needed sleep, then did some work on the computer. I was supposed to have a telephonic conversation with the East Coast Singer, but she got hung up in a meeting, so I went and had a sandwich and fries, after which I picked up a couple of packages. Then I came home and had the telephonic conversation. We went over all the new patter, I made some changes as she read through it, then I sent her the corrected copy. She’ll now learn it. After that, I did some more work on the computer, sent an eBlast for the Kritzerland show and the Nudie screening. Then I went for a swim, which I’m now going to try to do all throughout the summer at least four times a week. After that, I went to Gelson’s and got some small snacks for the evening, knowing that I wouldn’t be eating again until after today’s rehearsal. Then I came home and sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I compulsively and addictively watched four count them four episodes of The Bridge (Bron/Broen). I was, of course, hooked after episode one, but had I not been, I most assuredly was hooked after episode two. All four episodes I watched (through episode five) were excellent and gripping. I’m totally in love with this show and am just hoping it stays as great as it is throughout all ten episodes. The Killing series one kind of ran out of steam by episode fourteen, because the mechanics started showing, and once that happens, things become predictable. Series two of The Killing didn’t have that problem as much, since it was only ten episodes, but even then there was so much repetition in some of the subplots that it became a little irritating. Still, The Killing, Danish version, is terrific TV. Wallander never had the problem of keeping one storyline alive throughout ten episodes. In any case, I continue to absolutely love the two leads – the woman (I promise to have her name for tomorrow’s notes) is brilliant – and no, they have never actually come out and said it’s Asperger’s Syndrome, even though it’s pretty obvious it is. Her dialogue and reactions to things are so unexpected sometimes that it’s just laugh out loud funny – that’s what sets this one apart a little – there’s quite a bit of dark humor (the male lead is just recovering from a vasectomy as the series begins and that gets some good mileage). Also interesting in these Danish and Swedish series is that there’s complete male and female frontal nudity, and that includes this series’ leading lady and several of its male characters, so to speak. The villain is dastardly and clever, but with reasons that seem to be important for him to make public – homeless people, bad doctors, etc. – of course, going around killing any number of people isn’t really the best way to call attention to any of that. In episode five a character that I came to really like (introduced in episode four) was killed by the villain, and that act alone upped my loathing factor by about 500%.

The show is mostly well directed, with only a minimum of shaky cam stuff, not really enough to even get annoyed by. The music is very good and typical of what they call Nordic Noir. I actually had to force myself to turn off the TV and not just continue watching late into the night. That’s what happens with compulsively addicting TV. After I stopped, I did yet more work on the computer and that was that. Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I must try and get as much beauty sleep as possible.

Today, I shall have an early visit with Dr. Chew, then I shall come home and not chew until after rehearsal. I will finish liner notes, and then hopefully pick up some packages, after which we’ll have our second Kritzerland rehearsal. When that’s done, I’ll get something soft to eat, then sit down and watch at least two more episodes of The Bridge.

Tomorrow I think I have a fairly light day, and the plan is to hopefully get the packaging for our next release in for approval, as we’ll be announcing it in a week-and-a-half. I’m really trying to get two releases ahead just so I don’t always have to worry about this stuff getting done at the last minute. Saturday is our stumble-through, and Sunday we have our sound check and show. The following week is already very busy, and then the week after that I come to New York.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, see Dr. Chew, finish liner notes, hopefully pick up some packages, and then have our second Kritzerland rehearsal. Today’s topic of discussion: Besides cats and dogs, what animals have you owned, and of those which were your favorites? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland hoping that June will be a month filled with health, wealth, happiness, creativity, and all things bright and beautiful.
