THE SEMI-COLON

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, apparently yesterday’s notes were the War and Peace of notes and so I think I’ll keep today’s notes short and sweet or, at the very least, sweet and short. I shall not rant; I shall be calm, cool, and collected, not necessarily in that order. Did you see that I used a semi-colon just then? Does anyone still use a semi-colon? Why bother, when you can use a whole colon? Semi-colons are not the full colon and don’t you think we should always have a full colon? First of all, we don’t have a semi-period or a semi-exclamation point, or a semi-comma, do we? So, why is the colon so special that it gets a semi? I just feel this is vastly unfair, punctuation wise. Let us boycott the semi-colon – let us even girlcott the semi-colon. Now that I’m looking at semi-colon do you really need the dash in there? Let’s see – semicolon. No, apparently you don’t need the dash, at least not when writing a Word document. Apparently the dash can be scotched or perhaps even bourboned. I don’t know what the HELL I’m talking about, do you? Don’t I have some short and sweet notes to write? I do and I shall, not necessarily in that order.

Yesterday was kind of a fun day in a way. I got up. That was fun. I answered e-mails, had a few telephonic conversations, had some fun reading the fallout of yesterday’s notes on a couple of Blu and Ray boards, watched the huge brouhaha on one particular board as the head of Sony restorations came on and posted that an “insider” who was supposedly a Sony person, has nothing whatsoever to do with Sony and never has. Naturally, the “insider,” who has been posing there that way for several years, someone with the moniker Penton Man, deleted the man from Sony’s post, said it had been dealt with and then left, supposedly going on an “extended” Memorial Day vacation. How convenient. Several people then posted that they didn’t really believe it was the man from Sony – but then it was confirmed by two very reliable sources (one of whom I spoke to) that it was. Oops. And then the site locked the thread. I think it would behoove the owner of that site to post something, offer an apology perhaps, and never let Penton Man anywhere near that site again. What is not good, is to ignore it – this guy has been lying about his “insider” status for years – own up to it, and move on.

I had a lovelier than lovely lunch meeting with Miss Juliana Hansen, after which I did some banking, after which I picked up several nice packages. Then I came home, swam, wrote blurbs for our new releases, which will hopefully announce in the next few days, and then finally sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched the fourth Van Veeteren film, which was excellent. It is an odd show in that the lead character isn’t in it much. Because he retired from the police to run an antique bookshop he basically offers advice when his colleagues come to see him – maybe three or four scenes per film now. Still, the stories are good. In the fourth film you know who the killer is from the first scene, so this plays out quite differently. And the wrap up was too quick and not satisfying, really, but again the actors are wonderful, the direction is simple and to the point, and the writing is good. Looking forward to the final two films over the next few days.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I must get as much beauty sleep as possible.

Today, I shall be up early, have to do a bit of shopping right at ten, then at eleven I’m taking the helper out for a birthday brunch, then I’ll hopefully pick up some packages, then I’ll finish prepping our new releases and hopefully our new master will be done no later than the early evening so I can get those audio samples to the web guy. No one seems to be communicating well these days and I’ve had to write some e-mails about it. So, whenever the master arrives, I have to stop everything, proof it, and extract the samples.

Tomorrow, I don’t know what’s going on – something is going on, there’s some meeting or some event and I’m too tired to look it up right now. Hopefully one of the things I’ll be doing is printing out a LOT of orders. We really need a LOT of orders, or there will be hell toupee. There are a few things happening on the weekend, and then next week is extremely busy with rehearsals and such.

Let’s all put on our pointy party hats and our colored tights and pantaloons, let’s all break out the cheese slices and the ham chunks, let’s all dance the Hora or the boogaloo, because today is the birthday of our very own dear reader Jeanne. So, let’s give a big haineshisway.com birthday cheer to our very own dear reader Jeanne. On the count of three: One, two, three – A BIG HAINESHISWAY.COM BIRTHDAY CHEER TO OUR VERY OWN DEAR READER JEANNE!!!

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do some early shopping, have a brunch, hopefully pick up packages, finish prepping releases, figure out a show order and begin writing commentary, and then relax if there’s any time left. Today’s topic of discussion: Sauces. What are your favorite sauces – on pasta, on vegetables, on burgers, sandwiches, whatever. Let’s make this a saucy day, shall we? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland where I shall dream of a lovely world in which only the colon reigns supreme. Only the Colon – that’s the title of my next novel.
