DAINTY JUNE

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, may I just say right off the bat welcome to June. Yes, it’s June and it is my most fervent hope and prayer that June will be a month filled with health, wealth, happiness, creativity, and all things bright and beautiful. It’s June, June, June and June is bustin’ out all over. There’s Memphis in June, Baby June, Dainty June, June Bug, June Moon, Junie Moon, and Jejune. It also means this year is half over and I am having great difficulty processing that information. Where in tarnation did the first half of this year go? It flew by, like a gazelle with a fever blister.

The last day of May started out with pain but ended up being a rather nice day. I got up early and went to my early appointment with Dr. Chew. When I was there four weeks ago to have the first chipped tooth filed, that Novocain shot I didn’t even really feel. However, yesterday’s Novocain shot was a killer – I don’t know if it was because it was in a different part of my mouth or what, but he must have been twisting and turning that needle for a minute, after which he pulled it out and stuck it back in. It was, in a word, excruciating. It did, however, numb the right side of my mouth and face completely. Then he began the thirty minutes of drilling down the tooth. I obviously couldn’t feel it but the smell and the sound was enough to make me want to vomit on the ground. He then took an impression of the filed-down tooth and fitted a temporary crown. The whole ordeal took an hour and fifteen minutes and I was so happy to get out of there. I came right home and began writing liner notes.

I did that and other work for a couple of hours, then I picked up some packages, but the stuff from UPS that was definitely coming wasn’t there, so I guess I get that today. Then I came back home, wrote more liner notes, and watched one episode of The Bridge, which was just as good as the other episodes. Then it was time for our second Kritzerland rehearsal.

I must say, this group is really on top of their material – they all basically knew the stuff by heart and only had to refer to their music a couple of times. We made some more adjustments, changed the key of one song, and we’re all set to go for tomorrow’s stumble-through. By the time we finished it was almost seven and I hadn’t eaten a thing so off I went to have an omelet and a bagel, and, for a little pain treat, a slice of apple pie with a scoop of ice cream and some caramel sauce. I ate less than half, but it sure was yummilicious. Then I came back home, finished the liner notes and sent them on their merry way, and then finally sat on my couch like so much fish and watched the final four episodes of The Bridge.

I’m happy to say that the show didn’t fall apart, didn’t overstay its welcome, and, in fact, kept me on the edge of my seat throughout. Interestingly, my keen eye had already picked the villain a couple of episodes ago, but that’s really not what this show is about. In fact, they reveal the villain in episode eight, and there’s one little twist to the reveal that happens in that episode as well. So, episodes nine and ten deal with the reasons the villain has done what’s been done and the police’s attempts to find and thwart the villain, who is always one step ahead of them. It all ends in a nail-biting showdown that has so much going on, so many nuances, that you just sit there breathless until it’s finally over. The leading lady is brilliant – her name is Sofia Helin who plays policewoman Saga Noren. Even though they never say Asperger’s Syndrome, you know that’s what it is. Even in the tensest scenes she can blurt out something that’s absolutely hilarious. Her Danish partner for this crime is an actor named Kim Bodnia, who is as terrific as she is. Both are very complex characters and these actors are just fantastic. The large supporting cast all do great jobs. To sum it up – while you can quibble about the ultimate reasons for what’s been done in terms of the crimes and the reasons, it doesn’t matter – it’s just so beautifully done and everything, whether you believe someone would go to such lengths or not, makes sense. Apparently there will be a second series and I will be there to watch it whenever it’s available.

After that, I did a little more work and then it was time to write these here notes, which, in case you hadn’t noticed, is what I’ve been doing. Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I must get a good night’s beauty sleep on this lovely first day of June.

Today should be a fairly easy day – just some errands and whatnot to do, hopefully I’ll pick up some packages and an important envelope (although because of the holiday last Monday it might be a day late – hope not, though), I’ll eat something soft but hopefully fun, and I’ll relax.

Tomorrow, she of the Evil Eye will be here, so I’ll definitely jog then do stuff and then we have our stumble-through, after which I’ll be supping. Then Sunday is our sound check and show. Next week is going to be a busy one – I’m determined to get the next Kritzerland show cast and songs chosen by mid-week.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do errands and whatnot, hopefully pick up some packages and an important envelope, eat, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday – what is currently in your CD player and your DVD/video player? I’ll start: CD, upcoming Kritzerland projects. Blu and Ray, Too Late Blues and many others. Your turn. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland where I shall dream of a June that is filled with health, wealth, happiness, creativity, and all things bright and beautiful.
