THROWING CAUTION TO THE WIND

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, what do we love about the Internet and what do we hate about the Internet? That is today’s topic of discussion. Why am I writing the topic of discussion now at the beginning of the notes? That is just backwards, isn’t it? That is just confusing as all get out and I think we all know just how confusing all get out is. But it was weighing heavily on the windmills of my mind and so I just put it out there. I just threw caution to the wind and, because turnabout is fair play, I also threw the wind to caution. Not only that, I also called the wind Maria, in honor of the Alan Jay Lerner show we’re doing this very weekend. I also called caution Maria and that did not go down well with caution, let me tell you THAT. I also called the wind wayward in honor of The Wayward Bus. Can someone please tell me what the HELL I’m talking about?

I must say yesterday was a busy little day and I just said it, didn’t I? My busy little day began at six in the morning, announcing the latest Kritzerland CD, a double-bill of The Wayward Bus and The Enemy Below. After that, I went back to bed and I think I got another two hours of sleep. Once up, I was up. I printed out a nice batch of orders, and then the helper arrived and she and I went to a magic land called Costco. I stocked up on water, bought some dark chocolate almond and cherry clusters that are out of this world, and other various and sundried items. We were there for about forty minutes, but amazingly we got out of there very fast – no long wait in a long checkout line. Then I decided to take the helper to lunch, so we went to the Kansas City Barbecue. I hadn’t been there in quite some time and it was the best it’s ever been. The brisket of beef sandwich was incredibly tender and tended to melt in the mouth, with not an ounce of fat anywhere. We split a little tiny side of their yummilicious baked beans, and I had regular fries and she had sweet potato fries. I was a good lad and only ate about five fries total. But, for me, barbecue lives and dies with the sauce and the Kansas City Barbecue sauce is the best barbecue sauce I’ve ever had. A superb lunch, and the helper loved it.

I then picked up three little packages at the mail place, then came home. The helper put two batches of roses we got at Costco in two vases – unlike most roses one buys today, these actually had fragrance, so I could stop and smell the roses in two rooms of the home environment. Then I printed out some more orders, after which Mr. Shelly Markham arrived and we did arrangements of the four put-togethers we’re doing in the show. Then at four our first singer arrived. She’s a newcomer for us and, in fact, won Michael Sterling’s LA’s Next Great Singing Star competition – I was one of the judges and yes I voted for her – Chelsea Emma Franko. She’s terrific, and we ran her three numbers – Hurry, It’s Lovely Up Here, Wouldn’t It Be Loverly, and Someone On Your Side (from Coco). Because we’re a teeny bit ballad heavy, we did something fun to the latter song by making it more of an up jazz waltz, which worked really well and she sounds great. Then Kim Huber arrived and it’s great to have her back with us – her first Kritzerland show since last December. She ran her three songs – Too Late Now, There But For You Go I, and What Did I Have That I Don’t Have, all sounding great. Then our beloved Jane Noseworthy arrived and we ran her three songs – I Could Have Danced All Night, Take Care of this House, and One More Walk Around the Garden (what a gorgeous song it is). Then it was our two guys. First up was Dennis Kyle, returning for his second show – he ran his three songs – On the Street Where You Live/Almost Like Being in Love (they go together amazingly well), Tell Me, Tell Me (from Lolita, My Love), and Dance a Little Closer/There’s Always One You Can’t Forget. Finally, Gordon Goodman arrived – he’s new to us and he’s just right for this show. He did his three songs – Camelot/If Ever I Would Leave You, The Little Prince, and Come Back to Me. And that’s our show, with Andrea Marcovicci doing Mr. Right from Love Life. It’s eclectic and fun. After that, my engineer arrived and picked up the Pro Tools session for Follies. I was hoping to hear something about it last night, but they saved it to the latest version of Pro Tools, which he doesn’t have on his home computer. So, he’ll open it at his work today and will have it on his home computer this evening. Then I finally sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I went back to Wallander. One of the packages I received had a DVD of The White Lioness, from the first batch of Rolf Lassgard films made a decade before the second batch. It was so different in tone and style that it took some getting used to. Lassgard was great, as always, but the supporting cast of regular characters was completely different to the second series of films. These early films have the father of Wallander and his daughter, so that was nice. The story was very good and I quite liked it once I got used to the whole different feel of it. I’d like to see the three or four other early films, but from what I understand, they’re not available with subtitles, although I’m checking the back alleys just to see what’s around. Certainly the DVD of The White Lioness is not legitimate and it looks like someone did their own subtitling. Transfer isn’t even worth talking about, since it was a homegrown DVD.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I must get a good night’s beauty sleep.

Today, I have lots of errands and whatnot to do, I hope to give the motor car a very needed bath, I’ll eat something light but amusing, I may try for a jog, hopefully I’ll print out more orders, and hopefully I’ll pick up some packages, and I’ll start some new liner notes. I’ve just made the decision what our next release will be. Then I’m sure I’ll relax and watch a motion picture.

Tomorrow, the East Coast Singer arrives and we rehearse for four hours, which I’m sure will be followed by dinner. Thursday we do another rehearsal with the singer, which will be followed by a Kritzerland rehearsal, which will be followed by a dinner with the lovelier than lovely Kay Cole. Friday we have a sound check and the singer’s first show, Saturday we have a stumble-through for the Kritzerland show, then the singer’s second show, and Sunday is our sound check and show. Whew!

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do errands and whatnot, maybe give the motor car a bath, maybe jog, eat, hopefully pick up packages and print more orders and start some new liner notes. Today’s topic of discussion: For those who don’t remember – what do we love about the Internet and what do we loathe about the Internet? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, whilst I throw caution to the wind.
