THE BOYS IN THE BAND

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, this week is flying by, like a gazelle driving an Edsel. Does anyone still drive and Edsel? Does anyone still wear a hat? These are the questions that are roaming around the windmills of my mind. I have to say that the USPS postal inspector did not do as promised and I received no call. Unfortunately, I realized it too late, but believe you me they are going to get a call this morning they will not like. And they can just get this postal inspector on the phone while I wait or they can assure me he will call within a certain time frame. I will not put up with this. Other than that, it was kind of a swell day. I was awakened by the door bell – another tree trimmer trying to give me an estimate I did not want, but since I was having very weird dreams it was fine to get up. I answered e-mails, had telephonic calls, realized we have less than 100 Follies CDs left, and then I went off to my lunch meeting.

The lunch meeting at Hugo’s in West Hollywood, was basically someone I know querying me about how to go about doing something. I gave her as much information as I could. Then I brought up something and that conversation turned into something that could potentially be very interesting and wonderful. This is something I’ve been thinking about for years and recently I began thinking about it again, very seriously. I’d already met with someone else about it, but the interest shown yesterday was very much to my liking and somewhat exciting. We shall see where it all leads. For lunch, I had their wonderful pulled pork sandwich, although there couldn’t have been more than two ounces of pulled anything in there, and it came with a very small side Caesar salad. It was all quite yummilicious, but it was nice to leave a restaurant not feeling bloated.

Then I came back to the San Fernando Valley and picked up one tiny package. I came home, printed some orders, and then did the Facebook event page for the Kritzerland show. That always takes a full hour since you have to hand select each and every “friend” you’re inviting. Then I had a few long telephonic conversations, after which I sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched a documentary on DVD entitled Making the Boys, the story of the creation of The Boys in the Band. While I didn’t find it especially well made, the subject matter is interesting and even compelling and some of it is very funny and some of it is very touching. Author Mart Crowley is, of course, the main focus, but it also talks about that whole era and what it led to. It also goes into how dated the play became almost instantly, only to fall back into fashion thirty years later. Interestingly, one of the most heartfelt participants is someone I usually cannot stand watching or listening to – director William Friedkin. But his reminiscences are wonderful and warm. Most of the original cast is, sadly, no longer with us, but the two who are get a nice amount of screen time to tell their stories. There are clips of that original production, clips of the film, and lots of historical footage from the late 1960s and 1970s. The two most obnoxious participants are both young – one of them is a designer from Project Runway – he and the other fellow (from something else like that) have never heard of The Boys in the Band – it’s just not relevant to their very insular entitled world of now. They both come off pathetically, in my opinion (IMO, in Internet lingo). All in all, I can recommend this highly if you’re a fan of the play or the era or the history of the gay movement.

After that, I read through my contextual commentary and finessed it and smoothed it out and it now feels right to me. I listened to an upcoming project that’s a lot of fun, and that was my day and that was my night. Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I could use another good night’s beauty sleep.

Today, I have a long rehearsal with our musical director. Then I have some errands and whatnot to do, a jog to do, hopefully I’ll pick up some packages, and then I have to continue writing two sets of liner notes as well as get in the packaging for the Bajas and the Junior High School CD.

Tomorrow, I have a lot of stuff during the day and then a little dinner thing at Mo’s. Friday, more stuff then a dinner (again at Mo’s, ironically) and then seeing a concert presentation of Spring Awakening – I know one of the cast members, so that should be fun. Saturday, I’m going out to Calabassas to see that Spelling Bee show, so it’s a non-stop few days.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, have a rehearsal, jog, do errands and whatnot, hopefully pick up some packages, eat, write, and make sure packaging goes off to the printers. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any old question you like and we get to give any old answer we like. So, let’s have loads of lovely questions and loads of lovely answers and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland where I have no doubt I shall dream of either boys or a band.
