ANSWERING THE DOOR

Well, dear readers, I really had no clew what was going on yesterday. Heaven forbid I should ever actually look at my iCalendar where I now write everything down. So, there I was after an erratic night’s sleep – I was so wired after the show I didn’t fall asleep until almost three, and then I was up at nine-thirty, not quite ready to be up. So, there I was, answering e-mails, having telephonic calls, and doing some work, when I saw a musical director approaching my front door – Juliana Hansen’s musical director to be exact. I knew we had a rehearsal today at eleven so I had no clew as to why he was approaching my front door. I answered the door (I hate when the door asks me questions, just so annoying, as the door has a really wooden sense of humor) and was told our rehearsal was right then and there. Say what? So, I’d been ready to go eat and instead I found myself doing a two-hour work session. I didn’t mind, really, because it’s very enjoyable to listen to Juliana Hansen sing good songs for two hours. After the rehearsal, I printed out orders for our three new releases, then I went and had a turkey sandwich and no fries or onion rings, so still a six hundred calorie meal or under. But I’d missed the jogging opportunity because after lunch I had to go pick up three count them three returned Follies packages. I wrote the people involved – one of them got back to me right away but the other person has not. I’m sure I’ll get an e-mail from him one fine day, saying he never got my e-mail even though he has one of those truly irritating e-mail accounts where he has to “approve” your e-mail.

Then my friend, Mr. Nick Redman came over, and I got a little sneak peek at the two new Twilight Time Blu and Rays – The Sound and the Fury and Steel Magnolias. The former had both sound and fury and a nice transfer – its color palette is subdued and the transfer replicates it very well, with accurate color. It’s sharp enough that even in the long shots you can see the netting of Mr. Brynner’s wig. Steel Magnolias perfectly replicates the 1989 look of that film. I really don’t like the movie at all, but for those who do, no one will be disappointed with the transfer. Well, of course some will – that’s the nature of the beast. We had a lovelier than lovely chat, and then I went back to the computer. From that point on I have no idea what I did, save for the fact that I got absolutely no work done on the liner notes or choosing songs. I think I just needed a day off after our show. At some point, I went to Gelson’s and got some snacks for the evening, but nothing that would have put me over say 1000 to 1200 calories. I then sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched a motion picture on Blu and Ray entitled Coma, starring Miss Genevieve Bujold, Mr. Michael Douglas, and Mr. Richard Widmark, with a fun turn by Miss Elizabeth Ashley. Also in the film in a tiny role, certainly one of his first, Ed Harris. I’ve always enjoyed Coma, but even back in the day the set-up scenes between Bujold and Douglas were excruciatingly bad and they’re even worse now – just a bunch of unnecessary and phony-baloney pseudo conflict scenes – you know, the usual “you’re a chauvinist” crap that was all the rage – the problem is that while Douglas may well be one we never really see that – and therefore Bujold’s character comes off as strident and completely obnoxious. Early on, there’s also a scene of Bujold in a dance class. There are real dancers with her, including our friend Kay Cole, but Miss Bujold has no clew how to do what the rest of the class is doing and she’s just sort of back there moving orgasmically and it’s quite hilarious to see, as it bears no relation to the music or what anyone else is doing. But once the plot kicks in it’s really fun. Michael Crichton does a good job moving it all along and he’s abetted by a really fantastic score by Jerry Goldsmith. The first note of Goldsmith’s score occurs forty-nine minutes in, but when you hear it, it’s chill inducing. The climax is very tense and I just always enjoy watching it. The transfer perfectly replicates what the film looks like, therefore it gets highly recommended by the likes of me.

After that, I did stuff on the computer. In fact, I did everything but work. So, there I was, at the end of the day, having no clew as to what the HELL had actually gone on. Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I must get a good night’s beauty sleep for reasons you’ll discover in the next section.

Today, I must be up at nine to get ready for an eleven o’clock on-camera interview thing I’m doing for Author House as their most published author. The cameraperson will arrive and I’m quite certain I’ll answer the door, and I’m sure the door’s question will be as inane as all its questions. I have refused to look at the questions in advance because I like to be completely spontaneous. I have no idea how long it will all take. He’ll have to decide which room will be best to shoot in, and I’ll have to approve the shot and how I appear. After the shoot, I’ll probably do errands and whatnot, hopefully pick up some packages, and then I must buckle down, Winsocki and write them liner notes and choose them songs so I can get them to our singing singers. We’ve definitely confirmed Dennis Kyle, Lisa Livesay, Kevin Symons, Lindsay Ridgeway, Joan Ryan, Jason Graae and Lea Thompson, so we’ve got a great head start.

Tomorrow and the rest of the week is filled with meetings and meals and going and doing, and hopefully Thursday the big Follies poster will arrive, which I’m VERY excited about. If I’d wanted to uncrate the thing myself it actually would have been here today.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, answer the door no matter what its question, I must do an on camera interview, I must hopefully pick up some packages, I must try to work in a jog, I must eat a six hundred calorie meal, I must write, and I must choose songs. Today’s topic of discussion: For the Kritzerland shows I’m choosing songs from my albums, songs that haven’t been part of our shows – can be from solo albums, from concept albums, from cast albums. So, which songs would you like to hear? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, after which, I’m quite certain, the door will ask a question and I shall be answering the door.
