CHERRY-A-LET

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, this week has flown by, like a gazelle eating a Cherry-A-Let. What the HELL is a Cherry-A-Let anyway? Who on earth would come up with a name like that for a candy? Cherry-A-Let. I like the cherry part, that’s enough to get me to buy almost any candy, but it’s the A-Let that gnaws. I wonder if Alet Taylor was named after the Cherry-A-Let? If that were the case, her name would be Alet-A-Let. Not much is known about the origin of the Cherry-A-Let, but here’s one interesting factoid: It was trademarked five months before the birth of ME. Yes, Cherry-A-Let and BK were born in the same year. What are the odds of that? And just think – if my parents had been creative I might have been called Bruce-A-Let. Another interesting factoid is that both the Cherry-A-Let and the Bruce-A-Let were born in Los Angeles. What are the odds of that? The Cherry-A-Let was invented by the E.A. Hoffman candy company. Apparently, they are no longer made and that is a damn shame as I’d like to have one right now. I think I remember them, though – chocolate, nuts and a cherry filling and cherry in the middle. I think there was another similar candy bar called Cherry Mash. I don’t know what the HELL I’m talking about. Perhaps I should just write some Notes-A-Let.

Yesterday was kind of a day. I got up earlier than I wanted to, answered e-mails, did work on the computer, took a first pass at a song order for Juliana Hansen’s act, walked to the bank and did some banking, walked home and did some homing, and then Juliana came over and we went and had a working lunch at Hugo’s. We almost went to Casa Vega but changed our minds as we were driving by Hugo’s. I had the pulled pork sandwich and a small Caesar. After that, I came home and continued to do some work on the computer. Then I had a nice visit with Mr. Nick Redman. The a local dealer came by. Then our musical director came by and got all his music and a CDR. Then I finally sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched the featurette The Shark is Still Working on the Jaws Blu and Ray. It’s kind of a fan documentary done in 2005 and has lots of interesting stuff in it, and good interviews with cast members, behind-the-scenes folks, and fans. It runs about 105 minutes. Apparently the real deal is almost three hours long, but at 105 minutes I felt it was pushing it – I can’t imagine watching another seventy minutes of it. After that, I moved on to the final Cracker movie, also done in 2005. It’s amazing what a decade will do. The film was written by the show’s creator and main writer, but it’s not up to his usual excellent work. Gone are almost all the regulars with the exception of Robbie Coltrane, the woman who plays his wife, and the young man who plays their son. All the people working for the police department are new and none really register at all – that’s a fault of both writing and casting. It’s also the fact that all the original regulars were so distinctive and great and the show just doesn’t resonate as much without a group like that. Also, the story is very political, somewhat stereotypical in its presentation of crass Americans, and hit you over the head statements about the post 9/11 world. Even the main titles, which all of a sudden try for hipness circa 2005 are wrong, and the direction, for the first time in the history of the series, is fussy and show-off and that doesn’t help either. If they were to ever make another one, I’d say the only way it could work is to bring back as many of the original cast as possible.

After that, I went to Gelson’s and got some already-cooked salmon for my evening whatever. It was good, but the glaze was a bit strong for my taste. I also bought some more diet Dr. Brown’s Cream Soda and also Diet Black Cherry soda, in bottles of course. Then I came home, ate, and listened to some Kritzerland projects. One classic Golden Age score we’re going to do is very tricky – we’re simply going to salvage as much as we can of a very problematic source tape – I’m hoping we can at least squeeze out thirty minutes of it, and then we’d add some other score bits by the same composer to fill out the album. The main score were trying to salvage is truly beloved and iconic, so we will do our best and our best we will do, not necessarily in that order.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I must get a good night’s beauty sleep.

Today, I shall do errands and whatnot, hopefully pick up some packages and an important envelope, eat, write liner notes, and relax.

Tomorrow, I’ll pack and then just relax all day and night and try to get to bed early. Very early Sunday morning I’ll be up and I’ll be driven to the Bank of Bur Airport and will fly to the city that never sleeps. It’s a quick trip and I’ll return on Wednesday. During my stay, we’ll have a Sunday night get-together, and then Monday and Tuesday I’m in the studio producing a Christmas album for the East Coast Singer. If we’re finished in time, I think I’ll be supping at FJL’s apartment Monday night – I’m trying to get the exact schedule and then I’ll better know whether it will be possible. Tuesday night, if we’re done in time, I may go see Jason Graae and Faith Prince do their nightclub show. I did see it recently so if I had to miss it it would fine.

Why don’t we put on our pointy party hats and our colored tights and pantaloons, why don’t we break out the cheese slices and the ham chunks, why don’t we dance the Hora or the Swim, for today is the birthday of the very errant and truant S. Woody White. So, let’s give a big haineshisway.com birthday cheer to the very errant and truant S. Woody White. On the count of three: One, two, three – A BIG HAINESHISWAY.COM BIRTHDAY CHEER TO THE VERY ERRANT AND TRUANT S. WOODY WHITE!!!

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do errands and whatnot, hopefully pick up packages and an important envelope, eat, write, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday – what is currently in your CD player and your DVD/video player? I’ll start: CD, many Kritzerland projects. Blu and Ray, Shaft, Bye Bye Birdie and others. Your turn. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, where I shall undoubtedly dream of the Cherry-A-Let in ragtime.
