THE STRAW THAT BROKE THE KIMMEL’S BACK

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, it was the straw that broke the Kimmel’s back. What in tarnation is he talking about you might ask and I might tell you because why should I withhold such vital information from you dear readers? At four in the morning, I heard the sprinklers go off. They were quite loud and I don’t do noise in the middle of the night. So, once again I was up after not enough damn sleep. Ten minutes later they go off and I fall back asleep only to be awakened at five in the morning by the same sprinklers going off. I am now VERY irritated. They go off after ten minutes and I fall back asleep only to be awakened at six in the morning by the same sprinklers going off. By this time, I’m ready to ring someone’s neck because I was told the last time this kind of wacky sprinkler thing happened because a power outage had caused the timer to go haywire would not happen again because they’d put a battery in the contraption so that if there were a power outage the battery would take over. Yes, we had that power outage several weeks ago, but why haven’t I heard the damn sprinklers until this week. So, at six, I get up and go outside and what do I find? It’s not even MY sprinklers, it’s the next-door neighbors fershluganah sprinklers. I went back to bed after briefly contemplating going over to his house and banging on his front door. I fell back asleep around seven-thirty and slept until ten-thirty – somewhere in there I think I got close to eight hours of sleep but not the kind I needed.

The helper came over soon thereafter do to our once every few months Costco run and to get invoices. Before leaving, I dragged her with me when I went and knocked on the neighbor’s door. Thankfully he was home. I told him what was going on and that I could not be awakened again by that – he seemed befuddled at first and asked what time he should have them go on – I said anytime after eight or nine, but then I had to explain really slowly that they were going on every hour between four and six and that’s not good for anyone, and especially for his water bill. I think he finally got it, and he promised me he’d fix it. I’m truly hoping he has because if they go off tonight I may well just go over there at four in the morning and pound on his door. Then we did our Costco run and I got lots of waters and a few other items that I needed. Then we had some lunch – I had a chicken salad sandwich and a few fries. Then I came home. Mr. Nick Redman came by and we had a nice chat, and then I went to the mail place and mailed some stuff, faxed a paper, and picked up a package. Then I came back home and did some work on the computer until it was time to have a work session with Juliana Hansen.

She sang through all her material in the order we’ve tentatively chosen – most of it works fine, but I’m on the fence about a couple of things and will now spend time cutting and shaping her patter and thinking about the three medleys and how best to make those work. One of them I’m not sure will end up making the cut. After that, I finally sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched half of a motion picture on DVD. I cannot tell you the title since it’s an upcoming Kritzerland project (in fact our next release) and I’d never seen the film. It’s a little odd but enjoyable and a really good cast helps things – and the score, which is absolutely brilliant. I do think this release will cause some jaws to drop (in a good way) and I really think two of our dear readers will especially be astonished by this release. It’s been out on CD before in a not wonderful presentation, but it’s a release everyone stuck up for because it was important and it’s all there was. But it was incomplete and missing almost twenty-four minutes of great cues, it was in iffy mono (from optical and scratchy acetates), but the folks who complained were shut down by others who were simply grateful to have anything. And I was one of those doing the shutting down, I’m sorry to say. Well, sometimes miracles happen, although this miracle happened so off-handedly it boggles my mind to think that I may have not understood just how important it was. But I did, and we’ve done it, and it sounds absolutely incredible and it’s all in glorious stereophonic sound and is maybe the best early stereo recording I’ve ever heard. I’ll say no more except save your shekels because anyone who loves great film music will have to have it.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I’m as tired as I’ve ever been and I need to get these here notes posted and get what will hopefully be an uninterrupted good night’s beauty sleep.

I don’t know if anyone has noticed, but today, astonishingly, is the final day of August. Can you believe it? August has flown by, like a gazelle having milk with Bosco. Yes, tomorrow is September, and it is my fervent hope and prayer that September will be a month filled with health, wealth, happiness, creativity, and all things bright and beautiful.

Today, I shall hopefully arise after a good night’s beauty sleep. I shall then do nothing but relax, maybe write some liner notes and do some other packaging things, then I shall hopefully pick up some packages and an important envelope, I’ll finish watching the movie, and then I’ll be doing to the Cicada Club to see the helper perform. I’m looking forward to this club – the restaurant scene in The Artist was shot there, and it’s supposed to be like a little time machine back to a classier era.

Tomorrow day and night is all ME – nothing but relaxing. I’ll eat something fun, but other than that it will be movies, napping, and resting, not necessarily in that order. Sunday will be more of the same, so that I’ll be in fine fettle to go to the Hollywood Bowl to see David Newman’s film music concert. Next week is hugely busy.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, relax, maybe write, hopefully pick up some packages and an important envelope, watch a movie and go to the Cicada Club. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday – what is currently in your CD player and your DVD/video player? I’ll start – CD, endless projects. Blu and Ray, the new Twilight Time titles. Your turn. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland where I shall hopefully have no more straws breaking anything.
