WHAT CARE I FOR TINSEL AND GLAMOR?

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I am sitting here like so much fish after just having taken a nice hot shower. I am relaxed and I am in the zone (enoz, spelled backwards). Did you know, for example, that it is now Fall. I think LA is a little confused about what the word Fall means, since it was about a hundred degrees today and even in the evening it was in the high eighties. I guess LA just hasn’t gotten the Fall message, I guess LA is behind the curve and not with it. But what care I for tinsel and glamor, for I am in the zone. What care I if LA hasn’t gotten the Fall message? I care not, that’s what care I. What the HELL am I talking about?

Yesterday was a day, I suppose. She of the Evil Eye arrived both bright and early and early and bright, and I moseyed on over to Jerry’s Deli where I had a mushroom, cheese, and onion omelet and a bagel. I then did some errands and whatnot, after which I picked up no packages and an important envelope. I then did some banking. I came home, prepared the eBlast for Monday’s Kritzerland announcement, listened to the master, got the web guy audio samples and that’s all ready to go now. We’re still not cast fully in terms of the ensemble, and it’s beginning to irritate me. I have three people trying to rustle up some folks, so hopefully by Monday we’ll be all cast. I also had several long telephonic conversations and answered a plethora of e-mails. And somehow, after all that the day was over. I don’t really know where it went, really. It was like The Curious Case of the Missing Day. Since it was the end of the day, I then sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen, on Blu and Ray. I’d read a couple of reviews of the Blu and Ray that actually made it sound good – why I ever listen to these pipsqueak know-nothing “reviewers” is anyone’s guess, although I was intrigued enough to want to see it anyway. Actually, former dear reader JMK at least saw the flaws and boy are their flaws. The film in question was and is entitled Man-Trap, starring Jeffrey Hunter, David Janssen, and Stella Stevens. The director is the surprise – Edmond O’Brien. I love Mr. O’Brien as an actor, always have. But as a director, he makes Ed Wood look like a visionary. Man-Trap would best be described as a C-picture masquerading as a B-picture. It’s a heist picture, but not really. It’s a sordid drama, but not really. It’s shot in black-and-white scope to no effect at all. The actors have all had better days – they’re all terrible, with Stella Stevens, who I normally enjoy, really taking the bad acting prize in this one. Mr. O’Brien doesn’t seem to know that he’s shooting in scope, and the compositions are flat and dull and lifeless. The “action” sequences are so ineptly staged that they are laugh out loud funny, especially the three villains, who might just as well be named Larry, Moe, and Curley. The normally very good Leith Stevens provides a terrible score, very much in keeping with the rest of the film. The transfer is sharp, but it has problems at the source, especially in the sound. This is highly not recommended by the likes of me unless you want to see a ninety-three minute film that seems longer than Lawrence of Arabia.

After the movie, I buckled down Winsocki and spent the next three hours writing and finishing the contextual commentary for the upcoming Kritzerland show. While I’m sure I’ll be finessing it in a few days, it’s great to have that out of the way so I don’t have to worry about getting it done during what is going to be an incredibly busy next two weeks. Then I took my shower and then it was time to write these here notes.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I must get a good night’s beauty sleep.

I think the real question for today is indeed what care I for tinsel and glamor? I care not. Oh, I don’t mind a bit of tinsel here and there, and a spot of glamor every now and then, but not in huge doses. Today, I shall be comping the last of the vocals. After that, I come home and rehearse with Juliana and after that I go to The Federal to see a nightclub show and sup.

Tomorrow, I shall announce the new Kritzerland release, rehearse with Juliana, have a little meeting with the camera people, have a little meeting with the gal who’s helping with the shoot, then Sharon McNight will be stopping by for a script and her tracks, all of which I sent her via e-mail but she’s having Internet problems and cannot retrieve them. Then I’ll be going to the Dale of Glen to see a staged reading of Titanic, the Maury Yeston musical. The rest of the week is filled with rehearsals with Juliana, and then the shooting of two Outside The Box episodes for season two, and then Juliana’s show. I don’t know exactly when I’m supposed to breathe, but I suppose I’ll find a few moments here and there.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, comp vocals, rehearse, and see a nightclub show. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s free-for-all day, the day in which you dear readers get to make with the topics and we all get to post about them. So, let’s have loads of lovely topics and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, where I shall not care about either tinsel or glamor.
