IN THE BLINK OF AN EYE

Well, dear readers, did you ever have one of those days that began and then was suddenly over in the blink of an eye? I did. I had one of those days yesterday. I got up in the morning and the next thing I knew I was writing these here notes. It was one of those days that just flew by, like a gazelle with a kidney stone. I got up around ten (eight hours of sleep), had a telephonic conversation with Mr. Barry Pearl, and then an hour-long conversation with the East Coast Singer. Then I got the fixes for the first set of liner notes, I entered all of them, and sent the corrected version to the designer. Then I went to the editing room. The editor had already done the three tiny fixes and I must say that swapping the one shot out in the set-up scene was great – it’s now funny, as it should be. It’s just an always interesting process, editing is, and that if you’re on the wrong person for a line it will effect the audience and the way it hears the line, especially a laugh line. The other two things were both sound issues and easy to adjust. So, we locked it and made new compressed and uncompressed files. Then we moseyed on over to Dino’s Pizza and had a large pepperoni between us. I have never had a pizza at Dino’s that was ever less than great and yesterday was no exception. It was too much food, but who cares when it’s that good? Not me. Then we went back to the editing room and I went over to the mail place, where I picked up one of two packages I knew were coming. The second package, of course, was being delivered by Ontrac and at four o’clock in the damn afternoon they still weren’t there. So, a lot of good Amazon Prime is if you can’t get the package when you’re supposed to – and today after the shoot I will be calling both Ontrac and Amazon to complain again. After my last Ontrac call, the driver actually showed up at a reasonable hour for an entire week, but now he’s back to making this his last stop and I’m not having it.

Then I came home to a plethora of e-mails, the packaging, which I sent to the interested parties, and then I had to immediately begin the second set of liner notes. Once I figured out how to begin them, I got through the first half pretty quickly. Then it was more telephonic calls, writing a few additional lines for today’s shoot, and then I moseyed on over to see what Kay Cole had come up with for the one musical number in these two episodes that required real staging. Even in rough form it was very cute – it’s for a trio of guys – fun steps and easy to shoot. I stayed for thirty minutes, then came back home. I printed out the script and the call sheet and suddenly it was time to write these here notes because the day and evening were over in the blink of an eye. I didn’t even have time to post on this very site after my few morning posts, THAT’S how the day flew by.

Today, I will be up early and on my way to the first day of shooting on the two final episodes of season two. Today, we do the set-up scene for the first of them, which is a bunch of actors auditioning. The room is a little tricky to shoot (we’re in the smaller room today) – the real geography of the room will not be conducive to doing proper reverses, so I’ll cheat the reverses (on Michael Donovan and Kay Cole, watching the people audition) against a different wall, and it will all look right when it’s edited together. If I did it with proper geography, there would be way too much space in back of the audition table, and that would look horrible. But, all that will be a collaboration with the cameraman. I’m shooting all of the reaction shots on Michael Donovan and Kay Cole first. I’ll talk them through the different kinds of reactions I’ll want for editing. Then Michael will go – Kay will stay in case I need anything else. Then we set up for the actors and do those faux auditions. We’ve got about twelve people coming in all told, but frankly, if there’s something else going on in the big studio, which there well may be, I may just grab whoever wants to play and do a quick bit with them. We wrap the actual shooting part at noon, and then we have to dump the audio and video to the hard drive, after which I’ll hopefully pick up some packages, and then come home to complete the second set of liner notes so I can get that packaging turned in. Then I’m having an early birthday dinner with Mr. Jason Graae – we’re meeting at Mo’s in the Bank of Bur, so that should be fun.

Tomorrow, I’m up early again for our very long shooting day, doing seven musical numbers. Two of them are a little complicated, but the others are all extremely simple, so it should all work out just fine. We’ll wrap out by six and I’ll probably go sup afterwards. Friday we do the second set-up scene, and since I haven’t heard anything, we’ll probably do it at my house, in one of the rooms we haven’t used yet. That will be a very short day, and later I’ll go to the editing room to see the first cut of episode four, which hopefully won’t need much of anything but the usual trimming. Saturday is, of course, my very own actual birthday and I’m being feted at Genghis Cohen by a few friends, so that will be fun. Sunday I’m not sure what’s going on, and the following week will be pretty busy preparing what will hopefully be our final three releases for the year 2012.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, shoot a set-up scene, I must hopefully pick up packages, I must complete the second set of liner notes, and I must have an early birthday dinner. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any old question you like and we get to give any old answer we like. So, let’s have loads of lovely questions and loads of lovely answers, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland where I shall hopefully be asleep in the blink of an eye.
