THE SETTING UP OF THE PRINTER

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, the new printer arrived. Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, the new printer arrived. But before I tell you of the new printer, may I just say that it’s the final day of January? How did that happen? This month has flown by, like a gazelle in Florida. And tomorrow will be February, and might I just say that it is my fervent hope and prayer that February will be a month filled with health, wealth, happiness, creativity, and all things bright and beautiful.

And now, back to the printer. I unpacked it all by myself. I put it in position all by myself and I even attached the thing that goes in the rear of the machine all by myself. I hadn’t intended to but it looked like it would just slide in so I tried it and it slid in and locked so I figured I did it correctly. Then I called my friend who helped install the printer that died. There was a CD to download the drivers and there was a note that said for those with Lion and Mountain Lion operating systems we’d have to download online. And yet, when I looked at the CD it said it did have Lion on it. Meanwhile, the friend said she’d be here right away, but two hours later she still hadn’t arrived so I simply called Hewlett-Packard and got a tech support person on the phone. And so we began the process.

First he had me plug the machine in. I did that really well. Then he had me turn the machine on. I did that really well. Then the machine’s menu lit up and we chose English for the language and then he had me use that menu to set up the actual printer. Then he had me load the inks, which was pretty easy. I also loaded some paper in the tray. This tray holds over 250 sheets of paper at a time and the tray is much sturdier and easier to deal with than the previous model I had. It printed out a test pattern and everything looked great – and it’s so much faster and quieter than the previous model. Then it was time to have the computer “find” the printer. I inserted the CD, and “added” the printer – the wireless part worked instantly. Then we downloaded the drivers and that went really fast. I ejected the disc, and he asked me to print something. Naturally, I attempted to print a Word document, but we got an error message saying Word wasn’t communicating with the printer. I hate when Word doesn’t communicate – I’ve had to castigate Word for non-communication before. Word sometimes just doesn’t play well with others.

He had me attempt to print a PDF and that printed fine. We then tested the scanner and that worked fine. He then told me there was a known issue with this printer and Word and the Mac so my next step would have to be contacting Apple tech support, which I did immediately. I got a nice fellow and he talked me through some stuff. Then he had me check software updates and there was one for the printer. We did that update, which didn’t require the computer to restart. Then he had me try to print a Word document and voila, it worked perfectly. And so The Setting Up of the Printer was complete and I do love the new machine. I’m told the inks last twice as long, so that’s good. I went over to Staples and bought a set of inks and I have to say they’re cheaper than the other inks I used to buy. I printed out some invoices that had come in and it’s all working splendidly.

Prior to The Setting Up of the Printer, I’d had a lovelier than lovely lunch with our very own Mr. Jason Graae. We’re discussing a potential project and that’s all I’m going to say about that. We ate at some trendy jernt in Toluca Lake called Saltsweet. I had a turkey, bacon, and avocado sandwich and it was pretty good. After that, I drove directly to the mail place, where the new printer was waiting for me, along with one other package, the book that was the source for the Marigold Hotel film. I also managed to proof three chapters.

After the whole printer thing, I made a couple of low-calorie no-fat hot dogs and that was my evening snack. I then sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night I watched a motion picture on Blu and Ray entitled Polisse, a French film from France. I’d read very good things about it and so took a chance, since I enjoy most French films from France. This one is based on the exploits of a real-life French police squad who deal only with child abuse cases. The film is in the verite style and is way too episodic for its own good. The scenes of the squad goofing off or having down time go on and on and on, while the actual cases are given very little screen time. Still, some of it is affecting, but in the end, it just wasn’t as compelling as it should have been.

After that, I uploaded the Outside the Box season finale to Broadway World, so that will be premiering this Sunday, although I think I may ask him to hold it until Monday morning because of Super Bowl Sunday. We shall see. I also burned a DVD of it so that’s done and that’s what we’ll run at the Kritzerland show. Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I must get a good night’s beauty sleep.

Today, I shall do my morning ablutions and then I have a noon haircut appointment with Teddy. I will need to get some cash from the ATM before going, so I have dough for the tip. After that, I’ll come right back to the San Fernando Valley and I’ll lunch whilst proofing or, conversely, I’ll proof whilst lunching. I intend to do at least four or five chapters. Hopefully I’ll pick up some packages, and then in the evening I’ll relax and watch a motion picture of some sort.

Tomorrow is our second Kritzerland rehearsal and I’m hoping we can go out to eat afterward. Not sure what’s going on on Saturday, but Sunday is our stumble-through, after which I will prep our new release announcement. Monday is sound check and show, and the rest of the week will be very busy.

Let’s all put on our pointy party hats and our colored tights and pantaloons, let’s all break out the cheese slices and the ham chunks, let’s all dance the Hora and the Monkey, for today is the birthday of our very own dear reader Mike. So, let’s give a big haineshisway.com birthday cheer to our very own dear reader Mike. On the count of three: One, two, three – A BIG HAINESHISWAY.COM BIRTHDAY CHEER TO OUR VERY OWN DEAR READER MIKE!!!

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, get a haircut, proof, hopefully pick up some packages, lunch, proof, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: A topic we’ve done every now and then, but one I love and since we have a few new dear readers, one that will be fun for them. What was the very first computer you ever owned? When was the first time you were on the Internet? What was the first newsgroup you participated in? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, where I shall say a fond farewell to January and a big hello to February, along with my fervent hope and prayer that February will be a month filled with health, wealth, happiness, creativity, and all things bright and beautiful.
