TWELVE PAGES

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, our second Kritzerland rehearsal was really fun. Everyone mostly knew their lyrics, with only a couple of little things that a couple of people have to be stronger on, lyrics-wise. The singing in this show is superb, as are the songs, and there are just so many highlights. I’ll have more to say after the stumble-through, I’m sure, and definitely more to say after the show. We are completely sold out with a waiting list – I love when I don’t have to worry about that stuff. I’m thinking about making one small change but won’t until after I’ve seen the stumble-through. I probably will leave things as is, but I’ve alerted the singer and he’s fine whichever way we go.

Prior to the rehearsal, I woke up at five in the morning for the second day in a row. I got up, turned on the heat, and went back to bed, falling asleep around six and sleeping until ten. I then had the telephonic conversation and that went fine. We’re definitely doing the February Kritzerland show on Monday night, but from now on if there’s going to be any kind of change to our Sunday night routine, we’ll know about it sixty days in advance and can plan accordingly. Then I began finessing, futzing, and fixing, which took about ninety minutes – slow going, but I had to smooth things out, move stuff around, and begin setting up for a plot point. I was only able to actually write one new page before having to leave to eat something. I had a sandwich and no fries, picked up one little package, and then came back home. I wrote another six pages before the rehearsal began.

After the rehearsal, I sat down and wrote a few more pages, after which I made one of those pizza bread frozen things and then sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched the first half of a motion picture on Blu and Ray entitled Silent Running. I’ve only seen the film a couple of times and I don’t really love it, but I’m enjoying seeing it again, and I always enjoy Bruce Dern. The score by Peter Shickele is quite beautiful. The transfer looks mostly pretty good, although the scenes in space don’t have wonderful contrast, but it may well be the way the film looked back then. I don’t have enough history with it to know.

After that, I buckled down, Winsocki, and wrote a few more pages, for a total of twelve. The real plot of the book is now in motion and that happens at the end of chapter three. I’m two pages into chapter four now and will probably finish that chapter today, if all goes according to Hoyle. I then read my contextual commentary aloud, deleted one small thing, and smoothed out a few lines. It’s now ready to be printed. All in all, it was just another lovely day and I’ll take a lovely day anytime. It still didn’t really seem like a Friday but I’m sure at some point the days will start feeling like they should.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I must get a good night’s beauty sleep and I really hope I don’t get up at five again.

Today, I shall be up by ten, I may do a jog after finessing yesterday’s writing, then I’ll do as many new pages as I can before having to do some errands and whatnot, hopefully picking up some packages (one for sure), and then having our stumble-through at three with the full cast in attendance. After that, I’m sure some of us will go out and eat and then I’ll finish Silent Running and write some pages if I’m in the mood.

Tomorrow, I’ll jog, write, and then it’s video and sound check, and then the show. I’m sure we’ll go out after to Little Toni’s as we always do, and I will, of course, have a full report for you. Next week is mostly writing, but Monday will also be a visit to the editing room to see the first cut of episode five. I’ve already been warned we have some serious cutting down to do – it’s currently clocking in at over nine minutes. But I already know that the audition sequence that’s the first half is way too long at 4:30. I’m sure he just used everything he could, so we’ll shorten that down at least by 1:30. Once that’s done, the other thirty to fifty seconds will have to come from the musical numbers. I’ll know when I see them if we can shorted certain sections. We had to do that with the Psycho episode, which ran really long in the first cut. For that, I took out the intro verse to Showering My Troubles Away, and cut the entire last verse of Nobody Here But Mother. The good news is, we’ll have the uncut version of that on the Blu and Ray. It’s usually pretty obvious what can come out, though, and the editor and I are usually right on the same page about it.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, finesse, maybe jog, write, hopefully pick up some packages, do a stumble-through, eat, and watch a motion picture. Today’s topic of discussion: Since February is a Stephen Schwartz show, tell me your favorite Stephen Schwartz songs – but only the songs for which he’s written both music and lyrics, as I’ve made the decision we’re only doing those. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland happy to have done another twelve pages.
