DREAMING OF ROQUEFORT

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I must write these here notes in a hurry because I must be up at six in the morning to announce the new Kritzerland title. Last night, we had us a pretty grand Oscar Bash – we even cracked the top ten of our best posting days with over 980 posts. I had a grand time participating and reading, not necessarily in that order. Best of all, dear reader edisaurus showed up and that was really fun. And then dear reader Ann showed up and that was really fun.

The show itself was the longest in years – three and a half hours long. The opening fifteen minutes was excruciatingly unfunny, at least to me, and a complete time waster. Knowing who the producers were this year, I knew what we were in for and that is what we got – relentlessly. Musical numbers – many, many musical numbers all choreographed with mind-numbing plainness by a choreographer I am not fond of at all. We even got the Gay Men’s Chorus. There was a salute to the movie musical, which included Chicago, Dreamgirls, and Les Miz. Um, there’s about eighty years worth of musical movie history that was completely ignored, which is, you know, wrong. The jokes were shockingly bad most of the time, the repartee between the performers was even worse. The highlight of the evening, for me, was Dame Shirley Bassey belting out Goldfinger. It didn’t help to have the orchestra over a mile away in the Capitol Records studio so there were some tempo problems. The awards seemed to be distributed fairly with no one really running away with everything. Some of the speeches were nice. Whoever’s idea it was to play the theme from Jaws to cut off speeches, well, it wasn’t a good idea – it was embarrassing. The one thing we did not get much of at all was class. It’s just like every other awards show now – a bunch of young people thinking they’re being smart and funny. I’ll take Cary Grant and James Stewart and Bob Hope and Johnny Carson any old day.

Prior to that, I’d arisen at ten, approved the packaging for A Time for Singing, and e-mailed it to the powers that be for approval. Then I finessed my commentary a little bit more, after which I went to Gelson’s and did some shopping, which I haven’t done in ages. I got some bagels, some tuna, some pasta, and a few other fun items. I then came home and made two tuna sandwiches on bagels, then a few hours later had one more bagel, this time with a little butter on it. Then came the Oscars.

After that, I had to prep the eBlast for tomorrow’s announcement of two CDs. Then I sautéed some onions and scrambled a couple of eggs for a light evening snack. And then it was time to write these here notes. Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I must get as much beauty sleep as I can.

Today, I’ll be up at six to announce two new CD releases, after which I’ll probably go back to bed. Hopefully I’ll pick up some packages and print out a LOT of orders, then we have our first rehearsal, which will be done by seven, I think.

The rest of the week is meetings and meals, I may see my very own brother briefly on Wednesday, then we have our second rehearsal, then I’m seeing a new musical, then we have our stumble-through, then video and sound check and show.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, announce two new CD releases, I must hopefully pick up packages and print out a LOT of orders, I must have a rehearsal and I must eat. Today’s topic of discussion: If you could bring back any fashion trend what would it be? And if you could bring back a once-popular foodstuff what would it be? My choice for the latter would be Roquefort dressing, which has all but disappeared from restaurants. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland where I shall dream of Roquefort.
