February 8, 2013:

THE FIXES

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, this week has flown by, like a gazelle dating a wombat. Does anyone still date a wombat? I spent almost the entirety of yesterday entering both proofers’ fixes to the book, that is, the one’s Muse Margaret and I were comfortable with. Both proofers caught different things, and there were a couple of doozies. That said, there were far less things to fix in this book than any other I’ve written, so maybe I’m learning a few things. I then sent the book for blurbing.

Other than that, I chose songs, got some of the sheet music we need, confirmed that we have another guest star, namely Joanne Worley, which will be way too much fun. Then I picked up one package, after which a friend came to visit, bearing fresh-baked bread, and some salmon and rice dish for me to try in the next day or so. We went out to eat – I had another Cobb salad and a bagel. Then we came back to the home environment and gabbed for a few hours. The friend wanted to read the first two chapters of the new book aloud, since the friend hasn’t read any of my books. It was interesting to hear it read aloud in a voice other than my own – I now realize just how careful I’m going to have to cast the person who will do the audio book versions of the Hofstetter books. Interestingly, whilst the friend was reading aloud I caught three errors – one was a wrong street name for Astroburger – I had Melrose in the book, and there is an Astroburger on Melrose but it’s not “my” or “Adriana”‘s Astroburger – ours is on Santa Monica Blvd. So, that was a good catch. Then in the first chapter there’s a character named Paul who I, for some reason, called Dan in one sentence. So, that was a good catch. Finally, there was one paragraph where I used Adriana’s name one time too many in a sentence, so I fixed those three things. I may now read the entire book aloud to see if I catch anything further. It’s an interesting way to proof.

Then the friend left, but by that time it was too late to start watching a motion picture, so I did some work on the computer instead, and entered the second proofer’s fixes, which took about an hour. Then I tallied up the Laura orders and was happy to see that we’ll be sold out at some point today, maybe even by noon. It’s our first sell out since Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing, although four other titles are now very close to selling out. I’m trying to figure out what our final February release will be – several candidates at the moment, but none quite ready. I’m going to prepare the packaging on two of the titles and hopefully we’ll be able to get one of them done in time. Also, Juliana Hansen’s Live album will announce at the end of the month, too. Then it will be on to March’s two releases.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I really must get a good night’s beauty sleep.

Today, I shall do errands and whatnot, hopefully pick up some packages, gather songs and begin to get singers their music, and then it’s a birthday dinner with the Staitman gals and their mother – haven’t quite figured out the place yet.

Tomorrow, I’ll be up bright and early and on my way to the Santa Monica Book Fair – I’ll probably be there for two to three hours, then I’ll come home and then go to Barry Pearl’s house and we’ll all drive down to wherever it is he’s doing his show. We’ll sup in some barbecue jernt before the show. Sunday, I judge the finals in the singing contest, then have dinner with a friend. Next week I have to book the flight to Washington and get that all prepared, plus finish getting everyone their music and stuff.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do errands and whatnot, hopefully pick up packages, gather songs, and have a birthday dinner. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday – what is currently in your CD player and your DVD/video player? I’ll start: CD, many Kritzerland things. Blu and Ray, The Blue Angel with Marlene Dietrich. Your turn. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy to be done with the fixes.
