COLONEL PANIC

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I am overtly tired and also tired overtly. That is because I was up at six and never went back to sleep, so I only had about four hours of sleep. The big drama I had to deal with was the third shut down of my computer, where it just freezes and tells me I must power down immediately and restart. It happened about six weeks ago and I called and the senior tech talked me through some stuff and that was that. Then it happened a week and a half ago and I called the same senior tech but he apparently never got that message. Then it happened yesterday afternoon. The name he gave me for this phenomenon was Colonel Panic, which I thought was an odd but evocative name. But today when I talked to him and we looked at the logs when the problem happened, I saw that it is, in fact, kernel panic, which is odd but not nearly as evocative. The first time it happened he thought it might have been a software malfunction or a web thing causing it. But after hearing what the logs said he knew immediately that’s it’s a hardware problem, probably the motherboard. That is so irritating for a computer that’s just a little over a year old. So, Monday I have to lug it in to the Apple Store just before noon (I made an appointment). My tech sent an e-mail spelling out the problem. He said they quote from five to seven days to fix, depending on how busy they are. I will tell them that I’ll be out of town and that the latest I want to get it is the day after I return and hopefully they can do that as that is exactly seven days. It’s all covered by Apple Care but this crap makes me very uneasy. I’ve been assured that nothing will change – all my passwords will be there and all my settings and everything else. While they’re at it, I’ll probably have them install Mountain Lion, since I haven’t upgraded past Lion. So, a big ol’ pain in the butt cheeks, but in terms of timing it’s fine because I’m out of town anyway. I’ll just have to use the laptop to do stuff on Monday, but I’ll be using it Tuesday through Saturday anyway. I did put a few things I’ll need on a flash drive that I’ll have with me.

Other than that and my tiredness, it was a nice day. I had a haircut with Teddy and that’s always fun and amusing. I answered e-mails, but mostly I printed out orders all day long, along with talking to Apple for a long time. I also did a two-mile jog, which is all I had time for. Then I moseyed on over to a little woodfire pizza and pasta jernt near the theater I’d be going to, and met Mr. Barry Pearl and about twelve other people he’d invited to see the show and sup. Who knew? I hadn’t eaten anything all day and was quite ornery until I got some food down my gaping maw. I had pasta Bolognese – just the right amount, didn’t really fill me up at all. It was very good. Then we all walked to the theater, which was just down the street, and then it was time to see Barry’s ever-lovin’ Cindy in a play.

Last night, I saw Barry’s ever-lovin’ Cindy in a play, along with her other cast mates. The play was a drama with a handful of laughs, and was directed by my friend Kay Cole, who did a fine job of getting good performances out of the cast. Cindy was excellent, and so were her co-stars. It’s the best I’ve seen from this troupe so bringing in outside directors is something they should do more of. I didn’t care for the play much at all – I found it confusing and hard to follow, and it was a bit too long for its own good. The theater was one of those really teeny-tiny things, but they had a nice, full house.

I hurried home after the show, stopping at Gelson’s to get some fruit to nibble on. Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I am in real need of a good night’s beauty sleep.

Today, I shall do a jog (I’ll try for three miles), do some banking, hopefully pick up some packages, eat something light but amusing, start writing the contextual commentary for the Kritzerland show, after I’ve finalized the show order, and then relax.

Tomorrow I’m lunching with friends, and I’ll try to finish the commentary, otherwise I’m packing and relaxing, not necessarily in that order. Monday another contractor is coming to look at the house problems – they want two bids. Other than that, I’m not doing much of anything and I’ll definitely write the notes early and get to bed early as I’ll have to be up at 4:45 in the morning, after which I shall fly to Washington, DC.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do a jog, do some banking, hopefully pick up packages, eat, write, figure out the show order and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite fruits and vegetables and what do you like to do with them. I like to punish them. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland hoping there will be no more Colonel Panic or kernel panic ever again. I don’t mind the Spanish Panic, but that’s another story.
