LITTLE FROZEN TACOS OR SPRING AWAKENING

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I am currently addicted to little frozen tacos. Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, I, BK, am currently addicted to little frozen tacos. I bought them at Costco, a humungous box of them. Four of the little frozen tacos are only two hundred calories so it’s a perfect little snack when one is in search of a perfect little snack. These particular little frozen tacos contain chicken and cheese and while I know the reality is that they’re not really all that good, I am addicted nonetheless. One does have to be careful because one could conceivably just keep making four at a time and eating and eating and eating. But if one can just have the four as a snack then it’s perfect.

My goodness, the entire opening paragraph seems to be about little frozen tacos and my addiction to them. Perhaps it’s time to move on to some notes. Yesterday was a rather interesting day on many levels. I got up at eight-thirty. That was interesting. She of the Evil Eye left and I took a drive, just to kill time really. I drove into the deep Valley and revisited some streets I used to travel thirty years ago, just to see what changes there have been. And there have been plenty and none for the better. I did stop at Costco to return two pairs of pants, which weren’t a good size for me – I got two other pairs that were a better size for me. I stopped at a local used bookshop but didn’t really find anything much of interest. Well, I lie – I did find something pretty interesting. I didn’t buy anything, though.

Then I moseyed on over to Mo’s for a lunch with a seventeen-year-old singer we’re using in the upcoming Kritzerland show. Adryan Russ was there, as was the gal’s mom, the singer/actress Karen Culliver. I just wanted to get a sense of the girl before assigning her songs. She’s fun and now I know which direction to go in. I had a Chinese chicken salad for my meal. Then I picked up one little package, then came home. I had a couple of very long telephonic conversations with various and sundried friends, did some work on the computer, pulled all the Comden and Green CDs to begin loading songs into the computer, and was more than surprised to find I didn’t have the cast album for On the Twentieth Century. I know I had it, so I can’t imagine where it’s gone. I’ll download it from iTunes. And I’d completely forgotten about two interesting shows for which they did the lyrics – A Doll’s Life and Hallelujah, Baby. Neither show is wonderful, but each has some very good songs.

Then I moseyed no over to Theatre West to see Cole Porter’s Panama Hattie. I was under the impression it was a staged concert of the show, but it was fully blocked, no one was on book, so it was kind of that weird hybrid of being half and half, which isn’t my favorite thing. It was fun to see an old warhorse star vehicle – there’s really no reason for doing Panama Hattie unless you have Ethel Merman or someone like her. The comedy is broad, and the score certainly isn’t Porter’s best, although there are some fun numbers. I’m curious now to see the movie version with Ann Southern, so I may try to find it. Some interesting folks in attendance, including Jane Kean, Millicent Martin (I said hi – she remembered me right away from her guest starring appearance in an early Kritzerland show), casting director Marvin Paige, and lots of others. The cast included my pal Sara Ballantine and frequent Kritzerland musical director Tom Griep’s young daughter, Oliviana, who was adorable. There was also a dog in the show, and I must say he stole every scene in which he appeared. It was a long evening.

Then I came home and had some little frozen tacos and a bagel – an interesting ethnic marriage that made no sense at all. Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I really must get a good night’s beauty sleep and we all will lose an hour of sleep this night thanks to Daylight Savings Time occurring earlier and earlier in the year, which I find quite annoying.

Today, we must all remember to move our clocks forward one hour – Spring Forward. I have to spend the morning loading in Comden and Green songs into the computer. Then Juliana Hansen is coming by to pick up some of her CDs. Then I have a lunch in Westwood with dear reader Jeanne at the new deli that’s replaced Junior’s. It certainly can’t be any worse than Junior’s, so I’m always willing to give a new deli a try. Then I’ll come home and finish assigning songs and then gather up sheet music. I’m sure I’ll watch something or other.

This week is filled with meetings and meals and seeing shows and getting ready for my trip, which is coming up a week from Tuesday. So much to do, people to see, places to go, plus I have to write a set of liner notes, do and edit road map, and hopefully get some tapes I need to check out and maybe have transferred.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, move the clocks forward one hour, load songs into the computer, visit with Juliana, lunch with Jeanne, gather music, assign songs, and then relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s free-for-all day, the day in which you dear readers get to make with the topics and we all get to post about them. So, let’s have loads of lovely topics and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, sated with little frozen tacos and ready to Spring Forward.
