LUG NUTS

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, can someone please explain to me why the words lug nuts popped into my head yesterday? Out of nowhere I suddenly thought – lug nuts. You must admit, that is outrĂ©, oh, yes, that is outrĂ©. I do know what lug nuts are but why I should think of them is anyone’s guess. I mean, I wasn’t changing a tire or anything, nor was I thinking about a tire or even attire. Lug nuts were, in fact, the furthest thing from my mind, and yet suddenly I thought – lug nuts. I don’t know – perhaps I’d just seen a big lug on the street followed by a crazy nut. Of course, the larger question here is what the HELL am I talking about. Well, lug nuts, I guess.

Yesterday was quite a fun little day. I got up at nine so I could put my car in front of my house before all the spaces were gone due to something filming and having all of the south side parking spaces. Those cones and signs have been there for a week and we all received the paper from the LA Film whatever. So, imagine my surprise to find all cones and signs gone without a trace and no filming. Nice of them to let all of us know. What a bunch of losers. I was out the door by ten, and did a three-mile jog, which was difficult but rewarding and also rewarding and difficult. Then I answered e-mails and did some work on the computer. Then my lunch companion arrived and off we went to my restaurant of choice, Stanley’s.

I so wanted to have their yummilicious pasta with salmon in a light tomato cream sauce, but light and cream is an oxymoron and I am very serious about losing all this weight I’ve gained, so instead I had their yummilicious Chinese chicken salad, whilst my lunch companion had Amy’s Salad, which is a Chinese chicken salad with grapefruit and avocado added. They have amazing fresh bread, but I was very good and only had one small piece with one pat of butter. There was a lot of fun chatter and laughs and I saw not one person I knew, which is a little unusual for Stanley’s. After that, I picked up one little package, then it was back home. The lunch companion and I chatted some more and then the lunch companion left and I bucked down, Winsocki and listened to three more auditions for the Hofstetter books. Still nothing quite capturing me in the way I want to be captured, but I’m told there will be another ten to fifteen coming along. When I’ve heard everyone, then I’ll boil that down to five finalists and for those I will definitely send them a recording of me reading a handful of short passages for reasons I’ve explained. I then sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I finished watching The Blob on Blu and Ray. It’s short and quite fun, even today. After that, I watched another motion picture on Blu and Ray, this one an import and region B release of A Study in Terror, a film about Sherlock Holmes and Jack the Ripper (and done long before the same story was told again in Murder by Decree). I’ve always been fond of A Study in Terror – it’s nice and lurid in garish color, lots of cute tarts on the streets of Whitechapel after dark, despite all of the cute tarts being warned time and again. I really like John Neville as Sherlock Holmes – the writing isn’t brilliant, but he’s really good and the Dr. Watson, while not my favorite, is also fun. The rest of the cast is great – Anthony Quayle, Robert Morley, Cecil Parker, and a very young Judi Dench, who’s quite adorable. And we even get Georgia Brown doing a couple of ditties. I’m happy to say that this transfer is really good and this is the best this film has ever looked on home video, but way way beyond the other versions. Excellent detail (there are some sequences that have optical fog laid in and those obviously suffer in detail as they should), the color is lurid and correct, and the sound, mono, is quite nice and delivers good sound for John Scott’s fun score. All in all, a lovely viewing experience.

After that, I buckled down, Winsocki again and wrote the blurbs for our two upcoming releases, chose the audio samples, and got everything to the web guy. I think we’ll announce on Friday. Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button because I really must get a good night’s beauty sleep.

Today, I shall definitely jog, I shall prep our eBlast, have an early supper with friends, hopefully pick up some packages, do errands and whatnot, and then relax.

Tomorrow, I’m seeing a play and Saturday is currently open and Sunday I think I’m having a meal with friends. I’ll also pack and get ready for next week’s brief trip to Washington, DC to work with the East Coast Singer for a few days and then see her in a show, before returning to LA on Saturday afternoon. Let’s start sending excellent vibes and xylophones for good weather on all parts of the trip – coming and going especially.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, jog, prep, sup, hopefully pick up packages, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: When did you first discover Mr. Sherlock Holmes? What was your first Holmes film, your first Holmes story, and which actors are your favorite Holmes and Watson, whether on stage, TV, or film? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, where I shall undoubtedly dream of lug nuts.
