FORM AND CONTENT

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, once again it is late, so once again I shall write these here notes in a hurry with nary a thought as to content or form or even form or content. Frankly, I’m content with no content. And a funny thing happened on the way to the form, but I don’t remember what it was. Yes, form and content, that’s the thing and we shall have neither or neither.

Well, that was a complete waste of a paragraph and do you know what? It had neither form nor content, not necessarily in that order. In any case, yesterday was a day, I think. I got up at nine thanks to the ringing of the telephonic device, but went right back to sleep since I hadn’t really fallen asleep until almost two-thirty in the morning. I then slept till eleven-thirty, which I needed. I got up, did my morning ablutions, spoke to one more candidate for the Hofstetter books, this one a last-minute addition to audition – she was a Barry Pearl suggestion and after talking to her, a good one, I think. So, I sent her the galley and pages to read and since she’s extremely interested and extremely conscientious, I’ll probably have something to listen to in the next day or so. I have a good feeling about her, for various and sundried reasons. We shall see.

I then did a three-mile jog, then prepared the eBlast for Monday’s announcement. One of the complicated things we’re trying to work out with this release is to have an unspecified number of booklets signed by the film’s star – we hope that number will be 100, but it will totally depend on how the star is feeling. But the timing is also an issue. The star can sign on Thursday, but the print just went in on Friday and late at that, so I just don’t know if they can turn around the print that fast – although we’ve asked them to try, even if it’s just those 100 booklets. Because if Thursday doesn’t happen then it’s going to be at least two weeks until we can set another date and that’s not good. So, we’ll see how it goes and I’m sure I’ll know on Monday. The other thing we can do if we miss Thursday is just let the first 100 people know that we’ll send out their CDs when they come in but send the signed booklets under separate cover. That would probably work.

After that, I did some work on the computer, picked up some packages, and then the day was already done and I moseyed on over to the Bank of Bur to sup with Adryan Russ at P.F. Chang’s. I must say, I know people like that jernt, but I’ve had ten or so meals at various branches and I don’t think I’ve had one dish that’s above mediocre. We split the honey chicken, Kung Pao chicken (really strange) and shrimp in lobster sauce. I was very good – I had enough to satisfy me but not nearly as much as I eat when I’m at Genghis Cohen. So, I had less than half of each dish. After dinner, we walked back to the theater and attended the opening night of a new play with songs, a show about the tortured, closeted, and drunk life of lyricist Lorenz Hart. I shan’t say much of anything because this is the show’s first production and it’s hot off the typewriter. The author is a smart fellow and I’m sure he’ll figure out what’s working and what’s not. The show is presented in one act and features quite a few Rodgers and Hart songs – some used ironically, some used illustratively and some just sung. I would definitely look at both the opening and the closing of the show because neither quite works yet. The cast was very good, the set a little unwieldy (just platforms and steps, basically, but very widely spread out and really one two areas used for the majority of the entrances and exits. The band (four players) does a good job, too. Of course the songs are Rodgers and Hart so you know those are wonderful. Since I know several people involved I wish them nothing but luck while they develop the piece further.

I saw lots of fun folks in the lobby after, including pals Marsha Kramer, Murphy Cross, our Ben-Hur, Kevin Symons, agent Martin Gage, and many others. It was a nice night out. I came home to an interesting private message on Facebook from a gal who obviously knew me when – she mentioned my performance of Gee, Officer Krupke at Louis Pasteur Junior High School at a lunch time talent thing. That would have been in early 1962! I’m sure I wrote about it in either Kritzerland or Kritzer Time, probably the latter now that I’m thinking about it. Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I must get a good night’s beauty sleep.

Today is a ME day – so I shall get up when I get up, I shall jog when I jog, I shall eat when I eat, I shall plotz when I plotz, and then I’ll watch some motion pictures, maybe write some liner notes and that’s about it.

Tomorrow is our first Kritzerland rehearsal, so I’ll have a lot of stuff to do prior to its start. Tuesday there’s several things going on and then I have to see some kind of show at some kind of theater. The rest of the week is meetings and meals, our second rehearsal, our stumble-through, our sound check and our show.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do a jog, eat, plotz, maybe write some liner notes, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s free-for-all day, the day in which you dear readers get to make with the topic of discussion and we all get to post about them. So, let’s have loads of lovely topics and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland where my dreams shall have both form and content.
