UP AND AT ‘EM

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, the tree trimming continued with the front of the house and the yard. It’s amazing what that kind of cleanup does for the look of a place – you can now see the house much more clearly and it looks really nice, save for the things that will be fixed over the next few weeks. The yard, too – looking very spiffy now and not so cluttered with dead palm tree stuff. More work today and then hopefully some planting of pretty and colorful flowers as many places as possible.

I was up by nine, answered e-mails, and then to Staples to make a new copy of the latest PDF. I then came back home and entered all the stuff I’d marked on the first copy into the second copy – that involved the first three chapters. Then I went to Jerry’s Deli and had some bacon and eggs and rye toast and tomatoes. I sat there for quite some time and proofed quite a number of chapters. This book has less stuff to correct than any other book we’ve done, but it’s still going to take an hour or two to do it – most of it is very inconsequential. The good news is I got a stupid typo and fixed it, and also rewrote one tiny thing that’s always bothered me – I discussed it when I finished the book with Muse Margaret, but it didn’t really bother her and it certainly didn’t bother any of the proofers, but as I read through it this time I thought it might bug some people and it was so easy to fix, just one adjusted line. It had to do with the location a scene was happening in that’s later referred to as having happened elsewhere – again, no one caught it and it’s not that bothersome, but may as well have it all match up.

I picked up a couple of packages and then came back home, at which point I did a three-mile jog. Then I continued proofing. I also got the news that the Kritzerland show is now fully cast and what a cast we’ve got: Kathy Dietch, Lisa Livesay, Jane Noseworthy, Michael Shepperd, and John Sloman, along with those irrepressible Staitman gals, Sami and Sarah, and two special guests – Miss Joan Ryan and Mr. David Burnham. Now all I have to do is listen to about twenty more songs and make the final song choices – it’s a hard one because there are so many great songs. After that, the helper arrived and we did a Costco run, where I bought two Jerry’s Deli gift cards (best deal in town – $100 worth of Jerry’s for $80), water, Diet Coke, a huge thing of Airborne, and some shrimp cocktail shrimp for my evening snack. Then we brought it all home, helper left, and I sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched a motion picture on a Region B Blu and Ray entitled The Servent, a film of Joseph Losey, written by Harold Pinter, and starring Dirk Bogarde, James Fox, and Sarah Miles. This is a film I was very fond of when it originally came out – it was quite something back then and it’s quite something still. It’s quite an arty little film, but it’s mesmerizing and the acting is incredible, especially Mr. Bogarde. Back in the day, it was really daring and racy and controversial and one can see why. The black-and-white photography is wonderful, and this is a lovely transfer of it. I’m looking forward now to the bonus material, which features new interview with Miss Miles and Mr. Fox, and older interviews with Mr. Losey and others. I have to say that those early 1960s years were incredible for me personally – I discovered so many great films back then – not only the Hollywood stuff, but this kind of film, too, and they were, in fact, some of my favorites. If you have a multi-region player this is highly recommended by the likes of me.

After the movie, I went back to proofing. I’ve now only got four more chapters, which I’ll do before one tomorrow. Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I must get a good night’s beauty sleep before day three of tree trimming begins early in the morning.

Today, I shall be up by nine, I’ll do a jog, and then I’ll go sit at Jerry’s again or maybe just sit here and finish the final four chapters of the book. I’m hoping Grant Geissman will be free at some point today, tonight, or tomorrow to implement these changes and then the book can go off to the publisher by Friday or Saturday. Once I finish, I’ll hopefully pick up some packages, I’ll listen to songs and then make my final selections, assign everything, and get everyone their stuff. I have to finish writing the flap copy for the book, too, and I have to do many other things, so it will be a VERY busy day.

Tomorrow and Friday will also be filled with writing liner notes, returning tapes, and all manner of things. Saturday night I think I’m seeing a high school production of West Side Story, and Sunday night I think I’m seeing a concert reading of Adryan Russ and Doug Haverty’s show, Inside Out.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do a jog, finish proofing, eat, hopefully pick up packages, finish choosing songs and assigning them, get people their music, write, and lots of other stuff. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any old question you like and we get to give any old answer we like. So, let’s have loads of lovely questions and loads of lovely answers and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, after which I’ll be up and at ’em.
