WHATEVER HAPPENED TO APRIL?

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I just can’t believe it. Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, I, BK, just can’t believe it. What can’t I believe? That it’s the end of another month, namely April. And so, tomorrow brings May and it is my fervent hope and prayer that May will be a month filled with health, wealth, happiness, creativity, and all things bright and beautiful. I have only one further question: What the HELL happened to April? It flew by, like a gazelle with a split infinitive.

Yesterday was one of those days in which I did not stop going and doing and also doing and going, not necessarily in that order. I was up at six in the morning to announce our new CD release, George Duning’s amazing score to The World of Suzie Wong in its first complete presentation. I went back to be at seven-thirty, fell asleep, and was back up at nine. I printed out a bunch of orders and then the computer had one of those kernel attacks and shut itself down. I am now convinced there is some incompatibility between the computer and the printer I have. I’m going to call Hewlett-Packard and discuss it with them. Once the computer was up and running, I was up and running and did a three-mile jog. Then I went to Jerry’s Deli and had a sandwich. At one I was joined by a young lady who is certainly a prime contender for the Adriana Hofstetter audio books. We talked about the books, the characters, and what I was looking for, and she will now do her final reading and I will choose on Wednesday or Thursday. Whilst there, I had a nice chat with my pal Johnny Dark.

Then I had to come right home (didn’t even have time to go to the mail place) for our first Kritzerland rehearsals. As these first rehearsals go, it was, as usual, a little rough and ragged at times, but I think it’s going to be a great show. The songs are just so damn catchy and tuneful. First up was Michael Shepperd, a newbie for us. This is his first time doing anything like this so he was a little nervous, but what a voice he has. We began with Feeling Good, then moved onto Gonna Build a Mountain, and finished with Who Can I Turn To? After Michael we had Kathy Dietz. She’s got the wordiest song of the evening, a put-together of the four different versions of Typically English from Stop the World – Typically English, Typische Deutsche, Glorious Russian, and All-American – it’s really fun and she’ll be great as soon as she learns it all. Then she did Talk to the Animals, and finished with the gorgeous Two for the Road. Next up was John Sloman, and he ran his three songs: First a put-together of The Candy Man and The People Tree, then After Today from Doctor Dolittle, and finally What Kind of Fool Am I? Then came the Staitman girls, Sami and Sarah, who ran their one number, Where Would You Be Without Me? I gave them some direction and we’ll do more intensive work on the Thursday rehearsal, but it’s really going to be fun. Then it was Lisa Livesay – first up was a put-together of Beautiful Land and Pure Imagination. Then it was another put-together, Sweet Beginning and You and I (from Goodbye, Mr. Chips), and then yet another put-together, Once in a Lifetime and Nothing Can Stop Me Now. Finally, it was Jane Noseworthy – she did a put-together of Look At That Face and My First Love Song, then a song called Love Has the Longest Memory (from the film Quilp), and finally my favorite Leslie Bricusse song, At the Crossroads from Doctor Dolittle. Our guest stars will be with us tomorrow and then on Thursday. Joan Ryan is doing a put-together of You Only Live Twice and Goldfinger, and David Burnham is doing This Is the Moment. So, that’s the show. And happily, I think we’re about five seats away from being completely sold out.

It was almost seven-thirty when we finished, so I went to Gelson’s and got some fruit and prosciutto slices and that was my evening snack. I sat on my couch and watched about four minutes of the third episode of Mr. Lucky – the sound was sped up and made everyone sound like Alvin the Chipmunk – sickening. Episode four was normal, sound-wise, so I watched that – Barbara Bain was the guest star and it was fun. Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I must get a good night’s beauty sleep.

Today, I shall do a jog, I shall eat something light but amusing, then we have a rehearsal with Joan and one of our newbies (she asked for an extra rehearsal, and we were happy to oblige), then I’ll begin a new set of liner notes, hopefully pick up some packages, and then I’m seeing some evening of performances.

The rest of the week is meetings and meals, our second rehearsal, seeing a performance, our stumble-through, sound check and then show.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do a jog, eat, have a rehearsal, write, hopefully pick up some packages and then see some performances. Today’s topic of discussion: If you could suddenly have any collectible in the world, free of charge, what would you choose and why? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, after which I shall enjoy the last day of April, whilst looking forward to the first day of May – and it is my fervent hope and prayer that May will be a month filled with health, wealth, happiness, creativity, and all things bright and beautiful.
