THE LUDDITE WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I am a Luddite in terms of technology – I don’t think there’s much disagreement on that point. I say this because apparently I’m not quite the Luddite I think I am and I’ll tell you why, for if I don’t tell you why then what exactly is the point of this paragraph? So, at some point yesterday I was sent the link to the updated discussion board. Very exciting to receive such a link and I clicked on it immediately and was whisked off to a new land housing our updated message board. It’s basically the same as it was, although the layout is nicer and it looks clean and fresh. There are some fun things now on the splash page – when you log in you see your avatar right at the top of the main page, along with some options for the board – fun! Now, because I’m an admin, all my permissions are automatically on and I can do whatever I like. So, I created a test topic of discussion, posted there, and even uploaded a photo from the computer – our photo cache still needs to be emptied, but this updated version still has some room in the photo folder.

Right away I noticed a problem – every time I posted instead of my post just showing up, I was taken back to the page with a list of topics. At that point, dear reader George logged onto the test board and he ascertained right away that we had to go to our member profile and check something to stop being returned to the list page. Once I did that, voila, perfect. Then I noticed that the Quick Reply box wasn’t opened and to open it I had to click on the words Quick Reply – most annoying. At that point, I called our tech guy and he didn’t really want to make any changes yet, as he was working on getting the notes part of the site designed so I could begin playing with that. This is where the Luddite part comes in. So, I went into the admin panel and began nosing around – I went into various preferences for the board, found the quick reply box preference and voila, the box was there. George couldn’t see the photo I posted or the avatars, so I found where that stuff was and got that working. George had already informed me that there was no way for him to post, so that became my next item to try and figure out. I went into our user permissions – that took me an hour to look around, but I finally could see that only about half the permissions from the old board had come over to the new board. So, I found the permission that all our regular users could post, I ticked it, and saved and voila we could post. Then Vixmom showed up and we continued finding what was working and not working. One thing Vixmom and George noticed was that the Calendar had nothing in it – none of our birthdays or events were there. Eventually, I found the Calendar preferences and voila, all our events were there. Still haven’t figured out why George can’t post an event – I went in and made sure everything was checked but it’s still not working. But let me tell you, I was very proud of myself for doing all that stuff I did with no help at all. VERY impressed, oh, yes, VERY impressed.

Prior to all that damn testing, I’d slept almost until noon – I guess all that sleep I haven’t been getting finally caught up with me, but boy I don’t like sleeping that late – the entire morning was gone. So, I answered e-mails, then did a three-mile jog, then did some work on the computer and made some fixes to the two packages we’re trying to get in for approvals. Then I went and had grilled cheese and bacon sandwich and no fries or onion rings, after which I came home. I haven’t actually been to the mail place since Saturday so I guess I’d better go over there today. At that point, I began doing the testing and that consumed the rest of what was left of the day. Then I sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I finished watching Half a Sixpence on DVD. I almost didn’t make it – it’s just, for me, a curiously inert film and Mr. George Sidney’s directorial choices are quite odd at times and I say that as a huge George Sidney fan. Another curious thing is that the key song of the show, the beautiful Long Ago, isn’t in the film, other than as the opening motif sung by a chorus, and in the underscore. It was filmed but cut – weird, since it’s used so prominently throughout the film. I’ve grown to at least enjoy some of Gillian Lynne’s choreography, which is certainly energetic, and it’s always a pleasure to watch Grover Dale dance. But a couple of the big numbers go on so long it’s actually mind-boggling. I know some people are very fond of this film and I’m glad it works for them. Every time I watch it I so want to love it and I so don’t. I do love the songs, though, and my memory of the stage play was that it was simple and fun. The transfer on the DVD is fine – it would be fun to see it on Blu-ray one of these fine days.

After that, it was more testing and futzing with the discussion board, and a few telephonic calls. Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I must get a good night’s beauty sleep and our Unseemly Button’s days are numbered.

Today, I shall jog, I shall hopefully be seeing the designed new main site for haineshisway.com, so that I can begin playing within the design. Once I approve it and now that it all is working, they will migrate to the new design without us having any down time. I also hope to spend thirty minutes on the phone with the tech guy going over the rest of the discussion board issues. He’ll be able to log on with dear reader George’s information so that he’s seeing exactly the same thing – then we can begin to fix the few permissions that are left to fix. I’ll hopefully pick up some packages, and that will be that.

Tomorrow, we have a video shoot here, then we’ll all go out and have some Thai food – in other words, we’ll Thai one on. We don’t allow groaning here at haineshisway.com. Then Friday I have some meeting or lunch or something, Saturday I’m seeing Parade, and then Sunday and holiday Monday should be fine for relaxation.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do a jog, play on our two test sites, hopefully pick up packages and hopefully relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any old question you like and we get to give any old answer we like. So, let’s have loads of lovely questions and loads of lovely answers and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland happy to be The Luddite Who Knew Too Much.
