OLD AXIOMS AND OLD SAWS

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, in one minute these here notes should be posted, but if that’s to happen then this is the end of today’s notes.  That wouldn’t be sporting, however, so we’ll just post them late with the old axiom, better late than never.  Or, conversely, better never than late.  I wonder if I have any other old axioms laying around that I could toss in hither and thither and maybe even yon.  Actually, is better late than never even an axiom?  Perhaps it’s an old saw.  Can there be an old saw and an old axiom – can the two co-exist in harmony?  Never put off until tomorrow what you can do today.  Now THAT is an axiom AND a saw.  You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar, although I once caught more flies with vinegar because the flies were being contrary just to prove the old axiom and saw wrong.  Well, I believe we’ve had enough old axioms and old saws and that’s the honest truth and we all know that honesty is the best policy.

I had a perfectly okay day yesterday and I did catch more flies with honey than with vinegar, so that was good.  I got up way too early, and then at ten Lanny and Sandy arrived and Sandy sang through what will be her new show, the show we’re doing to launch the album.  She was in good form and I gave quite a few notes (Bb, G, F#).  We worked till about noon, then Sandy was on her merry way to the airport.  Lanny and I went to the Studio Café and had some lunch.  I had my little drumettes and also a scramble of eggs, onions, mushrooms, bacon and a little cheddar.  That was my meal o’ the day, so I ate a bit more than usual because I knew I would not be having further food because of the Jewish holiday known as Yom Kippur.  We’re supposed to fast until tonight’s sundown – we’ll just see if I make it that long.  Yom Kippur is a solemn holiday and I prefer happy holidays, but I guess they can’t all be happy holidays and every now and then we need a solemn holiday.

Lunch lasted quite a long time because a friend of Lanny’s came by about an hour in so we spent another hour yakking away merrily and debating some old axioms and old saws.  Then I went and picked up a few packages, came home, forgot to go to the bank (I had a deposit to make but when I drove Lanny and myself to lunch I put the checks in the back seat then forgot they were there, so I’ll deposit them this day.  Then I had a few telephonic conversations, answered various and sundried e-mails, then did a three-mile jog, planked and did thirty-five sit-ups – yes, I went up five sit-ups and my goal will be to climb to fifty.  Then our website and discussion board were moved to new servers – it was a pretty simple thirty-minute thing so it didn’t really impact much of anything.  After that, I sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched the first third of a motion picture on Blu and Ray entitled Alamo Bay, a film of Mr. Louis Malle, a filmmaker I’m quite fond of.  I’ve only seen the film once, when it first came out, and I have little memory of it or even what I thought of it.  And I’d forgotten that an old LACC school chum of mine has a prominent role in the film – Cynthia Carle (she plays Ed Harris’s wife).  I’ll probably finish it today and then have a full report.

After that, I attended to things on the computer, and also the Sandy master began coming in so I listened to a little of that and it sounds pretty terrific.  I also finished the Dark Market book.  The subject matter is fascinating and compelling and the book reads like a thriller, but there are so many irritating things in it that stop it from being a classic, including the unpardonable sin of opening the book with a great story that is then abandoned for the history of cybercrime and the players, which brings us back to where we began, only the author never goes back to the story that opened the book, even though it’s left hanging.  We do find out what happened to the people, but to not tie that story up is just lazy and bad writing – or, don’t open the book with it and get us all involved.  I kept thinking, well, he’ll come full circle and wrap the book with the finish of that story.  Alas it was not to be.  The one thing that is clear in the book, which ends in 2011, is that cybercrime is not going to get better.  Yes, many of the players in the book got what was coming to them, but I think we all know that others come and take their places and spend every waking hour making the lives of perfectly nice people miserable.  Their endless rationalization that they’re only hurting financial institutions and not even them because they’re insured is just psychotic.  Note to hackers and scammers and phishers and pishers: You are hurting PEOPLE – real flesh and blood PEOPLE and you will all get yours in the end, and I mean that in the nicest possible way.

Today, I shall hopefully arise after a good night’s beauty sleep, then I’ll do the banking I should have done yesterday, then pay an obscene number of bills, try to hold out until sundown in terms of eating, do a jog, hopefully pick up some packages, put gas in the motor car (never got around to that either) and maybe take a relaxing drive somewhere.

Tomorrow, I’m attending a birthday bash for Michael Sterling, who hosts our shows at The Federal. It sounds to me like he’s put together a little Kritzerland-type show to celebrate his birthday, with many performers singing.  This coming week I have tons to do – including starting to choose the songs for the November Kritzerland show (trying to get a jump on – we only need to cast one more gal and we’re done with that), but we also have to do the Facebook event page for the October show and all that that entails.  I did come up with something really cute that I’ll be doing – I don’t want to give it away so I won’t, but I hired the person who’ll be doing it with me.

Let’s all put on our pointy party hats and our colored tights and pantaloons, let’s all break out the cheese slices and the ham chunks, let’s all dance the Hora or the Hora, because today is the birthday of beloved dear reader, Singdaw.  So, let’s give a big haineshisway.com birthday cheer to beloved dear reader Singdaw.  On the count of three: One, two, three – A BIG HAINESHISWAY.COM BIRTHDAY CHEER TO BELOVED DEAR READER SINGDAW!!!

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do a jog, I must bank, I must pay some bills, I must hopefully pick up some packages, I must put gas in the motor car, I must take a drive, and then I must break the fast and eat something amusing.  Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite old axioms and old saws?  Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland where I shall not put off until tomorrow what I can do today.
