CLOSE HARMONY

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I must write these here notes in a hurry because it is very late and I am very tired and need some beauty rest pronto.  So, first things first – we had our second rehearsal – learning the group numbers, including the opening number, which we spent the most time on, given the extremely close harmonies.  They got it, but now just have to spend time listening to their plunk tapes to lock it down.  We also learned the second number, the end of the act, and ran the opening of act two.  There are just three others that we’ll learn next Monday, which will be solely another musical rehearsal from top to bottom.  So, it was fun to have everyone there and hear how their voices will work together.

Prior to rehearsal, I got nine hours of blessed sleep, printed out orders, answered e-mails and printed out some music, after which I went and had some chicken tenders.  I picked up one package and then came back home.  Then I did a three-mile jog, planked and did forty-five sit-ups, which worked off about three hundred of my seven or eight hundred calories.  Then I did some show work, then had to deal with a little drama, which I hope I dealt with well and positively, and hopefully it’s been put to bed.  Then I began the drive to rehearsal, with my intention to stop somewhere and have a salad or cup of soup and kill time until rehearsal at seven.

I left at four, a little later than the day before, and it was still pretty smooth all the way down to Olympic.  That street is really good and I was to West LA in no time.  This time I decided to take Olympic to Centinela to try getting to Venice Blvd. that way.  I learned quickly that Centinela doesn’t go through to Venice Blvd. from there, so I was jogging wildly all over the place and finally ended up at Lincoln at Ocean Park Blvd.  I thought that would be great, as Venice is only about a mile and a half from there.  So, I turned left onto Lincoln and realized that was a horrid mistake.  It took a half hour to got that short distance and I eventually turned off and took side streets down to Venice.  Then I drove for a few blocks, finding no place to sit down and have a snack.  I ended up parking on Main Street, a block from my old apartment at The Shores.  I couldn’t find the Enterprise Fish Company – I’m told it’s still there, but I think I was remembering it in the wrong place.  But I walked three blocks on Main and boy has it gone downhill in its hip and trendy factor.  It’s pretty sad, actually and kind of a bore and I found no restaurants of interest, but did pass by three count them three Irish pubs.  Go know.

So, I got back in the car, got back to Venice Blvd. and drove east and still found no restaurants.  By that time it was already five-thirty so I just drove to the theater and parked and had close to an hour-long chat with our very own Mr. Nick Redman.  After that, I opened the theater and got everything set up.  I think I’ll try Overland to Venice tomorrow – there’s a ton of little jernts on Venice at that point.  I’m also going to try going to Astroburger and getting to Venice that way via Houser, which goes all the way down there.  I’m sure I’ll come up with something that’s ideal.

After rehearsal, I was really hungry so I went to Jerry’s Deli and had a chili cheese and onion omelet – it was okay, but not nearly as good as the day chef makes it.  It was also much smaller with much less chili and cheese, and that was probably a good thing.  Then I came home and Sami Staitman’s mom had brought a couple of small bundt cakes that no one at rehearsal really tried, so I had them with me and I had some of the pumpkin spice bundt cake, which was pretty good, I thought.  I had three or four bites and that was that.

Today, I shall be up by ten, the helper is picking up some invoices and I’ll just say to any dear readers or lurkers that if you want Heaven Can Wait/Racing With the Moon, now would be a good time to get it as it will definitely sell out today.  I’ll do a jog, I’ll eat, and I’ll hopefully pick up some packages.  Then I have to print out a bunch of music for our substitute pianist so he can do tonight’s rehearsal.  Our MD had to take his book to make mp3s, so I’m stuck printing out what everyone is singing tonight, which is about fifteen songs in all.  We’ll set keys, and anything I think of, arrangement-wise, I’ll record and send to our MD.

Tomorrow, I’m lunching with David Wechter, then it’s another rehearsal and I’ll start to rough block the numbers starting right at the top of the show, just for position and seeing how things look – full cast will be there, and there’s really not all that much blocking to do on the solo songs.  I may stage a couple of the group songs myself, just for fun, but Kay Cole will do the rest of those.  Friday night continues blocking, and that’s what we’ll be doing on Saturday and Sunday – we’ll have mp3s to work with for most of the material.  I’m also seeing something this weekend but I can’t even remember what.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, jog, eat, hopefully pick up some packages, print out music and then have a rehearsal.  Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any old question you like and we get to give any old answer we like.  So, let’s have loads of lovely questions and loads of lovely answers and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, where I shall dream in close harmony.
