OUT OF ORDER

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I must write these here notes in a hurry because it is after midnight and I’m letting it all hang out, due to the fact that I just ate a rather large late meal after my late meeting.  Said meeting was with the potential set and lighting person for the revue, and I liked him very much, he totally “got” the idea of the show and what I kind of had in my head, even though I gave few specifics other than where the piano had to live and that I wanted the set to function so we could surprise the audience every now and then by introducing a hat or a prop or an instrument from a hidden place within the set.  He drew a rough thing right away that I liked instantly and that would function really well and be very stylish – basically a three-level riser thing that would look elegant with no sharp lines and that would enable me to block interestingly and have lots of variety.  He also understood how important the lighting is.  He has to clear some things in his schedule, but I’m really hoping he’ll be with us and I think he’d like to be, too.

After the meeting I was starving because I’d only had a teeny-tiny piece of salmon earlier at noon, so I stopped at Jerry’s Deli and had something I’d never had before – I love when that happens.  My server recommended it – a chile cheese omelet and boy was it ever yummilicious.  I’ll be having that again.  It really filled me up, though, but fortunately I’d done a three-mile jog, planked and done forty sit-ups.  Aren’t I all out of order here?  I’m in the middle of the notes and yet I’m at the beginning of the notes.  These are notes without a beginning.  These are notes gone awry.  These are notes out of order and the universe may not recover, but what the hey – as the thief who was caught stealing coins from an old lady said to the police, “I thought the change would do me good.”  We don’t allow groaning here at haineshisway.com.

Backing up, which is how I feel after the chili omelet, I slept until eleven, even though I was up several times prior to that, mostly thinking about a new name for the lead character in my next novel.  I began thinking about it yesterday and nothing and I mean nothing came to me at all.  Then one of the times I was awake this morning I got the first name and from there quickly got the second name.  I liked it but thought maybe it was too “cute” in a way.  But when I got up I typed it out and liked the way it looked, so that was great.  Or so I thought.  Then I had to quickly get ready and mosey on over to Mo’s for a lunch meeting with Adryan Russ, who’s assisting me on the revue.  We set the rehearsal schedule for the first week and as we went forward from there I could see that if we’re able to stick to the schedule exactly and if I get a piano sub in there for four rehearsals our first week, I think we’ll be okay.  That made me breathe a bit easier.  After that, I picked up one package, then came home.

Once home, I answered e-mails, did my jog, and had a telephonic conversation with Muse Margaret, who liked the new name much better than the old name, so that was good.  But then for fun I looked up the name on Google and to my dismay I saw that some idiot wrestler had that name so that name was out as far as I was concerned.  So, it was back to the drawing board, at least for the last name – I was still happy with the first name, which is really a nickname and the character’s real name – love them both and so did Muse Margaret.  Then I sat on my couch like so much fish.

Yesterday, I watched the first half of the new Criterion Blu and Ray of Georges Franju’s brilliant film, Eyes Without a Face.  I’d gotten the French Blu and Ray a year ago when it came out, but it didn’t have subtitles – I’ve seen it so many times I watched it anyway.  The Criterion is the same transfer, which is amazing looking.  I’ve written about the movie many times here, but I’ll say more when I’ve finished this evening.

Then I got in the motor car and headed over to the Monica of Santa and my evening meeting at the theater.  Thankfully traffic was okay at that hour, save for a one mile stretch just before my exit.  Whilst driving, I made a hands-free call to Muse Margaret to tell her why I couldn’t use the name that I’d come up with, and I swear to you while the phone was ringing a new last name came to me – not a jokey or clever last name, but one that had strength and sounded real and that I just fell in love with, and, more importantly, still worked with the nickname and real first name I was already in love with.  I told Muse Margaret about the wrestler and that I was glad in a way, because while I liked it it WAS a little jokey, which the old name she didn’t like also was.  Then I told her that another last name had just that minute entered my consciousness and the minute I said it to her we both knew it was absolutely perfect.  And then I said, what would you think of just the last name of the character as the title of the book – and voila, we have a new title and I really like it.  So, that was all great.

You know all about the rest of the evening because the notes were akimbo and out of order.

Today, I shall be up by ten, I think, I’ll have a telephonic conversation with Sandy about tonight’s show, and I do hope some of our East Coasters make it, even though it seems that most are too busy to even mention that they can’t.  Even if you have friends who you think might like an entertaining evening out for FREE, let me know and I’ll make sure they get in with comped cover and drinks.  It’s a really fun show and she’d like to fill the house.  After that, I have a work session with Lloyd Cooper, our wonderful musical director for the revue – we’ll just talk through things, do just a couple of arrangement things, and then he’ll hopefully be able to whip up some of the vocal arrangements for a couple of the group numbers by Tuesday, which is when we rehearse the group numbers.  After that, I’ll hopefully pick up some packages, then try to get in a jog before I have a little work session with a person – I can’t really talk about it because it’s a surprise, but I think it’s going to be so much fun to work with this person.  Then we’ll go out for a little bite to eat and then the evening is mine all mine, although I’ll continue to figure out the revue – I’ve started that work, kind of putting certain songs in act one and others in act two just to see what that looked like and how the singers were spread out.  So far, while the order isn’t anything yet, the song choices for each act seem to be solid.  We may be lacking a couple of uptempo tunes, but I have some stuff we can do if necessary.  It wouldn’t be more than one or two.

Tomorrow, I can’t remember what’s going on.  I’m not sure if I have a lunch meeting or not.  I’m kind of hoping not, and I’m kind of hoping that the day and evening are free to just work on the show, and I hope that holds true for Saturday and Sunday, too, although I may have to go see a show on one of those nights.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, have a work session, do a jog, hopefully pick up packages, have another work session, sup, and then finish a motion picture and do some work on the show.  Today’s topic of discussion: Omelets.  What are your favorite omelets?  Do you make omelets?  What’s the most unique omelet you’ve ever eaten?  All things omelets, is what I’m saying.  Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, where I shall most likely dream out of order.
