OY AND VEY

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, oy and vey is it late and oy and vey am I tired, so oy and vey I’d better write some damn notes in a hurry.  The reason for the lateness is simple – three extremely long telephonic conversations all having to do with the same thing.  So, now it is almost one-thirty in the morning.  Then again, I didn’t even get home until almost eleven-thirty.

We had our actor back and we ran the show and it was pretty smooth going, with a few hiccups along the way.  The artistic director of the theater was there and she had some notes for me, which I’m digesting and thinking about – I don’t necessarily agree with all of them, but I always give consideration then make the best decision I can while being true to who I am, the material, and the cast.  I’ll definitely try a few things – I’m always open to that, but I’m very happy with the actual structure and the way the show is built – it’s very careful in its construction and therefore I don’t really want to mess with it too too much.  The cast has begun to bond well, and now I’ve just got a lot of acting detail work to do.  The staging is fun and the show moves along at a steady clip.  And once we begin to do the show for an audience, THAT is what will really tell me what needs to be done, should there be problems.  And that’s all I’m saying about that, other than I love Jane Noseworthy, who is simply one of the best singing actors I’ve ever worked with.

Prior to that, I had a long day doing many things.  I was up at nine but fell back asleep, then arose at ten-thirty.  I answered e-mails, then finished the second set of liner notes and got them on their merry way.  The packaging of the first set of liner notes was sent in for approval, which will hopefully not take too long.  Then I went and had some chicken tenders, then picked up a couple of packages, then came back home.  One of the packages contained a very rare book – 42nd Street, the novel from whence the film musical and musical came.  You can actually find first editions fairly cheaply, but not a one of them has the extremely scarce dust jacket, which is almost impossible to find.  But I found one and got it, and it was an easy trade – in trade value it didn’t even cost a hundred bucks, and is probably worth ten times that much.  The jacket isn’t perfect – there’s a substantial chip out of the bottom of the spine, but the front and back panels are totally complete and it’s not price-clipped.  The jacket cover is great, too – maybe I’ll scan it and post it.  I spent the rest of the day getting singers and MD their sheet music and mp3s, which took a really long time – whilst I was doing all of it, I had an amusing little melt down because I could just not figure out how to get everything done in the time allotted.

When I got home, I was starving, so I had the only thing that’s in the house – candy and plenty of it (not really), and had the aforementioned three long telephonic calls, all of which had to do with the same thing, and all of which were interesting and informative for all parties.

Today, I shall begin liner notes three, I shall eat, I shall hopefully pick up some packages, I shall do some banking, I shall pay a few obscenely large Kritzerland invoices, and I shall rehearse.  I’m going to try a slightly revised opening to the show – not sure I’ll like it but then again, I might.  And I’m going to try adding to people to what was a solo – I think it will make the number more fun and give a bit of variety to what is a long sequence of solos in a row.

Tomorrow, I will definitely be back to regular jogging, and our rehearsal is two to six and then I’ll probably have to stay well into the evening to paper tech.  Then on Sunday, we begin our tech at eleven and will go all the livelong day and probably into the livelong night.  Then we have Monday off, and then it’s dress/tech and the beginning of previews on Thursday.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, write, eat, hopefully pick up packages, pay bills, bank, then rehearse.  Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday – what is currently in your CD player and your DVD/Blu and Ray player?  I’ll start – CD, too many to name.  Blu and Ray, next up is Oliver and Jane Eyre from Twilight Time and City Lights from Criterion.  Your turn.  Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, where I shall count my blessings as well as sheep whilst saying oy and vey.
