THROWING CAUTION TO THE WIND

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, once again it is very late and I’m just beginning these here notes and she of the Evil Eye will be here all too soon and therefore I cannot dally or tarry or even tarry or dally, I must, in fact, buckle down, Winsocki, throw caution to the wind, and write these here notes in a hurry.  Have you ever thrown caution to the wind?  Or, conversely, have you ever thrown wind to the caution?  How did caution feel about being thrown to the wind and did wind catch caution or drop it?  So may questions, so few answers.

Yesterday was a day and then it was an evening.  The day part was okay.  I got up about ten, did my morning ablutions, had some long, involved telephonic conversations, and then went and had a patty melt and no fries or onion rings.  I picked up no packages, and I can’t figure out what happened to the rest of the afternoon – all I know is I wrote no liner notes, but did get approval on Monday’s release announcement, so that’s good to go, although when I will find the hour to prep everything is anyone’s guess.  I did get some of the patter done for the upcoming Kritzerland show – this one’s easy, though, since a lot of the patter already exists from last year’s show and it’s pretty good.  I’m finessing it, and the new songs get new patter.  I should be able to finish that by Sunday.  Then suddenly it was time to go to the theater.

Without going into detail, the last couple of nights haven’t been to my liking at the theater – nothing to do with cast or show and everything to do with behind-the-scenes stuff, which was coming across to me very negatively.  I just don’t respond well to negativity of any kind, and I felt a lot of it so I just shut down, which is what I tend to do.  I made some changes to the show based on some notes that at least made sense to me – I don’t know that I agree with them or if I think they’re helping – one will probably stick, which is an addition to the opening of the show, and we removed two numbers – I missed one of them, and so I may continue to work on trying to make it work better (it has some problems I haven’t conquered yet) or we’ll find something to put in its place (it’s a duet).  If not, we’ll have a new solo for Sami, since the other number that was cut was one of hers, and she needs something in the second half of the show.  Other than that, I added the gals to sing backup to one of the early numbers and that really helped.  Anyway, the last two nights have not been fun and some of the cast was feeling the negativity strongly.  So, after tonight’s run-through I had a telephonic conversation that I needed to have, I said my piece, apologies were made, and I think things will be presented in a more positive way from here on in.

I’m wondering if there’s a dead skunk or rat somewhere in the vicinity of the home environment.  For the last few nights I occasionally think I’m smelling something rotten in the state of Denmark.  But then I think I’m not.  And in the car I thought I smelled it too.  It’s weird.  But hopefully the dead thing, if there is a dead thing, is not in the house itself.  I suppose if it were to get worse I’d call an exterminator to come check things out.

Well, that was a paragraph about a smelly dead thing.  It wasn’t even a definitive paragraph about a smelly dead thing, it was a maybe paragraph.  Still, any paragraph about a maybe smelly dead thing livens up any room.

Today, I shall be up early, I hope to jog, I’ll do some banking, I’ll hopefully pick up some packages, I’ll have a rehearsal – two hours working through stuff and making sure the little changes we’ve made are working and that I can live with them, and then a run-through.  Then I think a few of us will grab a bite to eat, after which I have to spend some of my evening dry teching.

Tomorrow, we have a very long tech day – Kay Cole will be with us from now on, which will be very helpful.  We’ll clean up stuff, we’ll tech and hopefully that part will go not too slowly, and then at the very end, we’ll do a run straight through.  Monday we announce the new Kritzerland title, and then I have the day and evening off – I’ll definitely finish at least two more sets of liner notes, I’ll finish two edit road maps for upcoming projects, and I’ll finish the commentary.  And hopefully I’ll catch up on some movie watching, especially as the Oscar hopeful screeners have begun to arrive – I’ve gotten four so far, including something called Rush, something called Before Midnight, something called Dallas Buyer’s Club and something called The Place Behind the Pines.  Needless to say, I’ve never heard of a one of them.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do a jog, do some banking, hopefully pick up some packages, rehearse and dry tech our show.  Today’s topic of discussion: What was the funniest or most shocking “accident” you’ve ever seen on a stage – whether someone going up on lines, props malfunctioning, actors missing exits, all that kind of stuff.  Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, where I shall definitely throw caution to the winds whether caution likes it or not.
