HAVING MYSELF A MERRY LITTLE CHRISTMAS

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I had myself a merry little Christmas and it was just a lovely, relaxing day of doing nothing at all.  I got nine-and-a-half hours of blessed sleep, not waking up until eleven-thirty.  I opened my presents, most of which were things I shouldn’t go near – See’s Candy, Dark Chocolate Caramel with Sea Salt, two pounds of chocolate biscuits, and more.  I also got a lovely signed copy of the Saving Mr. Banks soundtrack, signed, of course, by Richard M. Sherman.  Terri White also gave me a CD of hers, which I’m very much looking forward to.  The Wechters gave me a six-pack of Diet Coke in bottles and a DVD set of the Edie Adams show, a variety show from the early 1960s that I’ve never even heard of.  And a few other little odds and ends.

I then did a three-mile jog – Christmas Day jogs are always great because the streets are basically empty, and so it was yesterday.  When I got home, I finished watching Sabata on Blu and Ray.  I must say, it’s a completely enjoyable spaghetti western, with a wonderful performance by Lee Van Cleef.  This one has some really good humor to it, too.  The transfer has excellent color.

I then finished cleaning up – had two pots to wash and that was that.  I also read a little from a book on spaghetti westerns, a new tome that I’m finding almost impossible to navigate, due to an unwieldy and unfocused presentation.  There are three or four other books that are much better laid out, with the films being organized in such a way that you can actually find them.  I played a bit on the computer and then it was time to go to Cissy Wechter’s Christmas party.

I got there around six.  It was very crowded, and I worked my way around and said hi to all the folks I know.  Then food was served – Cissy always has the most incredible spread and there was turkey, ham, a spinach and green bean casserole, stuffing, sweet potatoes, and more, and then Cissy’s magical kugel, which she made especially for me.  I’d already decided to forego the potatoes and the stuffing, and I just had ham and turkey, some of the casserole, and two big helpings of the kugel – that’s the least I’ve ever eaten at one of these parties, but I still felt I was going to explode.  The desserts were of high quality, and I sampled a few, but really REALLY tiny portions – a sliver of cherry chocolate bundt cake (I mean a SLIVER), literally one bite of a cherry and apple cobbler, one small cookie (with a cherry on top), and a scoop of Barbara Wechter’s trifle, made with Cool Whip.  I hung out until about eight-thirty, at which point I came home.

Once home, I played on the computer, then did some research regarding the setting of what will hopefully be my new book – that was fun and I took lots of notes.  I still feel stuffed to the gills even as I’m writing this very sentence.  Cissy did give me some kugel to take home, but it’s safely in the refrigerator.

Today, I shall hopefully arise after another good night’s beauty sleep.  I do have to have one short telephonic conversation, and I should be hearing from the Darling Daughter about what time she’ll arrive.  Other than seeing her, I don’t believe I’ll be doing much of anything, which is just the way I want it.  I will be watching two more screeners that arrived, hopefully I’ll pick up some packages, one that should have been here Tuesday but, thanks to UPS, was delivered after the UPS Store had closed – you’d think the UPS would know the hours of a UPS Store, but apparently not.  So, I have to call UPS this morning and make sure they redeliver today.  I’m sure I’ll eat something, but whether that’s out, or I just whip up eight ounces of pasta and heat up the left over spaghetti sauce I know not.

Tomorrow, I’m having a one-hour work session for the Kritzerland show, and that’s the only work I’m doing, other than maybe making more notes for the new book.  I do have lots of movies to watch, so it’s a really good time to catch up on all that.  The weekend is mine all mine, and then next week is the same, save for our two Kritzerland rehearsals.  And we will, of course, have our annual New Year’s Rockin’ Eve bash right here at haineshisway.com – the best New Year’s Eve party on all the Internet.  No one else’s balls drop as festively as ours do.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, fore example, maybe jog, see the Darling Daughter, hopefully pick up some packages, eat, and relax.  Today’s topic of discussion: What were your favorite movies of 2013?  Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, where I shall wind down after having myself a merry little Christmas.
