April 27, 2014:

THE RESTFUL SATURDAY DURING WHICH I DID NOT MUCH OF ANYTHING

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I have been a very good boy.  Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, I, BK, have been a very good boy.  First of all, I got close to eleven-and-a-half hours of blessed sleep, which I desperately needed.  I think that was half of why my throat was scratchy and I was feeling not so hot.  Once up, I wasn’t sure how I felt, but as the day progressed, my throat did feel much less scratchy.  The only time I really spoke the entire day was to order lunch.  And other than lunch and picking up four days worth of mail, I stayed inside and relaxed and did not one iota of work.

I had chicken soup and some not very big chicken tenders, along with some tap tap tapioca pudding.  I answered e-mails, but otherwise I mostly sat on my couch like so much fish all day and all night.  I decided that instead of watching motion pictures that I’d watch documentaries on Netflix, as I knew some of those would put me right to sleep, which, in fact, happened a couple of times.  I don’t even think I remember all of the ones I watched.  I began with some documentary on James Ellroy – while I enjoy some of Mr. Ellroy’s writing, he is a completely repulsive person to watch and I finally had to shut off what was a really poorly made documentary without much point.  The best of what I watched was a very well made documentary about the rise and fall of Eliot Spitzer, who made the horrifying mistake of having sex with prostitutes.  This he did on his own dime, so I don’t really understand the hue and cry, but when you see the documentary you know exactly why and who was responsible for the information being leaked and for the eventual outcry.  Spitzer seems like a nice sort and he does take full responsibility and doesn’t even care about his enemies who leaked it.  People seemed to have forgiven Bill Clinton for his indiscretion and he was the president.  But there was much more at play here.

I also watched a documentary about a pediatrician pedophile, directed by one of his victims, of which there were many.  It’s very affecting at times, but really amateurishly done, and the director keeps cutting to himself endlessly as he interviews other victims.  It’s ultimately a frustrating story, as the doctor in question was and never will be charged with any crimes.

And finally, I watched a documentary called Unraveled, about white collar thief Marc Drier, who stole something like four hundred million dollars before he, like Bernie Madoff before him, was caught.  The film mostly takes place in his ten million dollar apartment, where he is under house arrest awaiting sentencing, where he could ultimately receive a sentence of 145 years.  It’s a well done film and even has some suspense as the day of reckoning approaches (he ultimately was given twenty years in jail).

All of that consumed most of the day and evening – the only other food I ate was some popcorn.  I played on the computer a bit, and continued to suck down ColdEEZ and Airborne.  Soon I will take a dose of Ny-Quil for safety’s sake and hopefully I can get another really good night’s beauty sleep.  So, the excellent vibes and xylophones are working, so please keep sending them at regular interviews – got to nip this thing and get my voice back to strength.

Today I hope to have another day like yesterday, although maybe I’ll watch some motion pictures.  I’ll only go out to get something to eat and I have to put an envelope in the mail.

Tomorrow the insanely busy week begins, with our first Kritzerland rehearsal leading directly to an Abner rehearsal.  I will block the remaining half a scene that’s left (seven pages or so), I’ll finish restaging the opening number, and then we’ll begin at the beginning and assemble the show, slowly but surely.  Not sure how far we’ll get.  Since I arrive an hour after rehearsal actually begins, I’ve left instructions that all the group numbers as well as a couple of smaller numbers be run so everyone is on their game when I arrive.

Tuesday and Wednesday are Abner rehearsals, of course, and Wednesday is also a designer run-through, rough as it will probably be.  Thursday is our second Kritzerland rehearsal, followed by an Abner rehearsal, and Friday is an eleven to five rehearsal.  Saturday is our stumble-through for the Kritzerland show (which is close to selling out), and then Sunday is sound check and show.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, hopefully arise after a good night’s beauty sleep, eat and relax.  Today’s topic of discussion: It’s free-for-all day, the day in which you dear readers get to make with the topics and we all get to post about them.  So, let’s have loads of lovely topics and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, after which I shall be a lazy loafer who hopefully will feel better.
