THE COMPS

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I must write these here notes in a hurry because it is very late due to the fact that I comped Sandy vocals until eleven o’clock.  That is very painstaking work.  We did seven of the fifteen songs, and will finish up the other eight next Monday evening.  The rigor pays off when we hear back the comped vocal.  Sandy sounds liquid and warm and beautiful and I’m always very careful when comping any singer, doing extremely detailed work to get everything so it sounds of a piece, so it sounds honest, emotional, funny or whatever.  It’s fun but it takes time and patience.  I, of course, am not known for having ANY patience, but I do when comping – I just have all the patience in the world and I become very methodical.  What I heard of John Adams’ rough mixes sounded great and I’m not hearing anything under optimal conditions.

Prior to that, I’d gotten a bit over eight hours of sleep, maybe even closer to nine.  I did some work on the computer, had telephonic conversations and began booking some stuff to promote And the World Goes Round.  We are, of course, doing an episode of The Broadway Radio Show with Donald Feltham right here at haineshisway.com, and I’m also close to booking a little launch party for October – just settling on the venue.  Then I went and had something called lunch – a Cobb salad with 1000-Island dressing and a toasted sesame bagel.  After that, I picked up one packages and then came home.  Thankfully, I’d turned on the air conditioning before I left, so it was nice in the home environment.  I then did more work on the computer, had more telephonic conversations, wrote more e-mails and then finally sat on my couch like so much fish.

Yesterday, I watched the first seventy minutes of the new Godzilla movie.  I’ll withhold comment until I finish it.  It seems very much like one of the 1980s Toho films, like Godzilla vs. Destroyah or that kind of thing.  It seems like a fairly weird film to me, thus far, but I have another fifty minutes to go, and the titular character JUST made an appearance about eight minutes after the hour mark.

Then we did the comp session, then I came right home and caught up on e-mails.  Just what up was doing on my e-mails is not known to me, but I kind of slapped up silly and up is behaving now and no longer on my e-mails.

Today, I shall finish liner notes, I shall eat, I shall hopefully pick up packages, do some banking, finish Godzilla and relax.

Tomorrow I have quite a bit to do and then I’m doing the Bewitched Fan Event in the early evening.  I have no idea what we’re actually doing there, whether it’s a panel or what, so it will be interesting to see exactly what they have in mind.  It’s over at the nearby Sportsman’s Lodge so I could actually walk there if I feel like it.  Friday evening I’m seeing a musical and prior to that I’m supping with Kay Cole and her ever-lovin’ Michael Lamont at Genghis Cohen.  Not sure what’s happening on Saturday but on Sunday I’m seeing the opening night of Kiss Me, Kate at the Pasadena Playhouse.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, write, eat, hopefully pick up packages, bank, and relax.  Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite monster movies from 1950 on?  Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy thus far with our comps.
