THE TWO-SHOW DAY

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, we had us a pretty wonderful stumble-through – so wonderful, in fact, that I gave the smallest number of notes ever.  It was great to have the whole group together, too.  I was very pleased with the structure of the show, there were lots o’ laughs, and the whole thing moved along really quickly.  It was pretty cramped in the living room with eighteen people there – cast is twelve and then there were parents of the kids.  My voice held up fine, but it still feeling tired so do send lots of excellent vibes and xylophones to have it be strong for our two-show day.

Prior to the stumble-through, I’d had a rough night – just couldn’t fall asleep.  I think I managed to get about five hours overall.  Then she of the Evil Eye arrived and I went and did a two-mile jog.  There is nothing quite like the sight of an elderly Jew jogging – it’s quite pathetic-looking, I’m sure.  But I just amble along, running the opening patter and my song lyrics over and over again.  After the jog I went and had two poached eggs and an English muffin to tide me over to dinner.

After the stumble-through, I was disappointed that no one could sup – normally at least the Staitmans can, but Sami’s tummy was bothering her so home they went.  I went to the bank to get some cash, then decided to see if our new City of Studio branch of Granville had opened.  Indeed it had, so I parked the motor car and ate there.  They’re having what is called a soft opening this week.  The always “with-it” Studio City sheep are already filling it up – at four-thirty yet.  Just listening to the yakking I gather that none of these sheep actually know what Granville is – I’ve been going there for years, mostly in Glendale.  I suspect that for the next six months the crowd from Lemonade and other new spots will all migrate directly to Granville and that it will be impossible to get in except at off hours.  I had what I always have there – the mac-and-cheese.  I have to say the portion is half of what it used to be, unless they gave me the appetizer instead of the full.  But it was very good and filling.  After that, I came home and sat on my couch like so much exhausted fish.

Last night, I watched the documentary about Joan Rivers on Netflix.  It was well done, but I grew weary of it after about thirty minutes.  I did fall asleep for about forty minutes, then went back and watched what I’d missed.

After that, I got the eBlast ready for Monday’s announcement.  I’m in a quandary as to the audio samples on this one – the mastering isn’t finished yet and if I don’t get those tracks tomorrow then I have to decide if I post the unmastered tracks.  The problem is, the volume levels, all of which get smoothed out in mastering, are all over the place.  One track will be too quiet, the next track will be loud – just not sure that’s what I want people to hear, but we’ll see how it goes.  I could just announce and say audio samples coming shortly.

Then I just played on the computer, barely able to keep my eyeballs open.  Then I decided to write these here notes early, thinking I might “schedule” them instead of posting myself at midnight.  I get nervous about it because one time it didn’t work (and one time it did).  We shall see.

Today, I have to be up at nine if I’m going to do a jog of any sort.  Our sound check is at eleven-thirty, then the first show is at two.  We should be through by three-thirty and then I’ll relax my voice until the seven o’clock show.  Then after that, I’m sure a few of us will mosey on over to Little Toni’s for a bite to eat.  I will, of course, have a full report for you.

Tomorrow, we announce the new Kritzerland release, which I’m praying does well in preorders.  Then I have to go through a lot of Scent of Mystery/Holiday in Spain material in preparation for our audio commentary on Tuesday.  I have to outline all the points I want to cover, but I’ll also have the fellow who did the transfer with me, Dave Strohmaier – so between us I’m sure we’ll ramble endlessly for all 108 minutes.  The rest of the week is meetings and meals, seeing shows, and then we have the Sandy photo shoot on Friday.  I’ll probably see Teddy that morning.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do a jog (if there is time), I must have a sound check, do a matinee and then do our evening performance as well as sup afterwards.  Today’s topic of discussion: It’s free-for-all day, the day in which you dear readers get to make with the topics and we all get to post about them.  So, let’s have loads of lovely topics and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, after which I shall gird my loins for our two-show day.
