FLUFF

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, this much I can tell you: It is Saturday.  And they say we’re only fluff around here.  Fluff, the say, and then sometimes, to be contrary, the say it backwards, ffulf, which is actually preferable in my humble opinion.  Is it really possible to have a humble opinion?  Is it really possible to eat humble pie?  Is it possible to mumble humble or bumble humble or grumble humble or even tumble humble?  Can you have humble fluff?  Can you have Saturday fluff or Saturday humble?  These are the questions that are roaming around the windmills of my mind on a Friday evening about to be Saturday.

Yesterday, I managed to sleep four hours without waking up, then I had to make a brief visit to the loo (ool, spelled backwards), and then it took an hour to fall back asleep and then some spammer rang the telephonic device, then I fell right back asleep, then the phone rang again two hours later and I finally got up.  But I do think I got between seven and eight hours of sleep although it didn’t feel like it.  I then did some work on the computer, after which I had to mosey on over to Jerry’s Deli for a lunch meeting with our very own Kay Cole.  It was a lovelier than lovely lunch meeting – I had a meatless Cobb salad with no meat and 1000-Island dressing and a bagel and she had some sort of salad, too.  We discussed many things, many projects and it was all too too.

Then I picked up no mail and no packages, after which I came home.  I had to write a blurb for the next Kritzerland show, and I did some other stuff on the computer and then it was time for me to relax.  So, I sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched a motion picture on Blu and Ray entitled Crimes and Misdemeanors.  I was in the minority on this film when I first saw it – I didn’t really care for it all that much.  I found its converging two stories occasionally at odds with each other and Woody Allen’s penchant for stilted dialogue was back in full force.  I understand why people like it, and I’ve tried over the years to do so.  Last night’s viewing, unlike Radio Days the night before, didn’t change my opinion of the film.  I like some of the actors, but Alan Alda just irritates me – yes, his character is irritating, but so is he.  In fact, outside of MASH I’ve always found his film work irritating.  Woody has some amusing moments, Mia doesn’t really have all that much to do, Anjelica Huston does well, but in the end I just don’t care one or even two whits about anyone in the film.  The transfer is an older one, and not quite up to Radio Days, but it looks quite nice.

I then watched a second motion picture on Blu and Ray entitled The Young Savages, which is about some young savages, i.e. teen gang members, and the opening plays like West Side Story without the music and lyrics.  It was John Frankenheimer’s second film, and it’s much more assured than his first.  The location shooting is great (Lionel Lindon was the cameraman), and Burt Lancaster is at his best.  Shelly Winters is also very effective, but everyone is excellent.  The film also boasts a terrific and unique score from David Amram.  The transfer done by MGM is one of the better ones, with crisp black-and-white and only occasional minor marks.  I’ve always liked the film and I certainly can recommend it.

Today, I really don’t want to do much of anything.  I read some good reviews of a barbecue place in the Bank of Bur – I’ve driven past it many times but have never gone in.  But these reviews made me want to try it.  It has several poor reviews, too, but I really don’t trust Yelp about barbecue and I simply must try it myself.  After that I’ll hopefully pick up some packages, and then I just have to rest and hopefully even snooze.

Tomorrow, if I’m feeling up to it, I may see Gone Girl at the DGA, but I also have a little writing I must do.  Next week is all meetings and meals, figuring out the show order and writing the commentary, I have some show or other I’m seeing at some point during the week (hopefully someone will remind me), and hopefully I’ll have approval for our next release.  I’m also hoping that Rio Conchos will come in so we can get all that shipped out.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, maybe try the barbecue jernt, hopefully pick up packages and relax.  Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite movies about teenagers?  Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, after which I shall attempt to have a day of nothing but fluff.
