PREPARATIONS II, THE ADVENTURE CONTINUES

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, the time is certainly getting nigh for the New York trip, so keep those most excellent vibes and xylophones coming for a safe, secure and on-time flight.

Yesterday turned out to be a day filled with doing and going and going and doing.  And eating, but more about that in a minute.  I had a fairly sleepless night – I don’t really think I slept more than five hours, if that.  Just too much in the old cranium right now.  I got out of bed at eleven and did all the stuff I normally do in the morning.  The helper came by and picked up some stuff and we went over everything that needs to be done whilst I am in New York, New York, the city that never sleeps.  After that, I went and had a chicken salad sandwich on the rye bread and no fries or onion rings.  I picked up no packages and then came directly home.  Once home, I decided to create the Facebook event page for our holiday show – that, of course, thanks to the lameness of Facebook, took more than an hour, but it’s great to have it out of the way.  I also sent an eBlast for the show.  I had several telephonic conversations with folks in New York, all having to do with getting an audience for our shows.  Attendance has gone up in the last day but not by all that much.  Minimally we kind of need at least thirty more people at every show.  We’re now just hoping that New Yorkers are all about last minute reservations or just showing up at the club, which I’m sure will happen.  The club itself has their eBlasts so hopefully we’ll pick up some of their regulars.  I know we’re on TDF now and there was a huge eBlast sent this morning to musical theater fans.  Do send some excellent vibes and xylophones for a bigger turnout – we need ‘em.

Then I packed about two-thirds of my suitcase – all that’s left is one pair of slacks and one shirt and I’m done.  I had travel-sized stuff for most of my needs – I just need some shaving cream, and deodorant I get in New York.

Then it was time to shoot our little promo piece for Inside Out’s fund-raising campaign.  I think we’re going to do Indiegogo – less rigid and a little easier to manage.  I’ll let you all know when that is up and running.  We had Adryan Russ and Doug Haverty doing sound bites about the show, I said a little, too, and that will now all be edited with music from the show and lots of visuals.  After that, Doug, his daughter Hartley and I went to a barbecue jernt in the Oaks of Sherman called Boneyard.  Hartley had told me about it on Saturday and I tried to go there on Sunday night, but couldn’t get in without a forty-five minute wait.  Thankfully they take reservations, so we made one prior to going over there.  In a word, the food was pretty terrific.  They first brought a basket that had bread and little corn muffin bites.  The latter were completely amazing and addictive, especially slathered in their really good butter.

I ordered the pulled pork sandwich and sides of potato salad and baked beans.  Doug and Hartley ordered a full rack of baby back ribs and sides of fried mac-and-cheese and cole slaw.  The pulled pork sandwich was great – jam-packed with meat and a really tasty sauce.  Not much on the sandwich but I, of course, had extra on the side.  The potato salad was really good and the baked beans were maybe the best I’ve ever had, even better than the Kansas City Barbecue.  Doug gave me one of his ribs and I have to say that while I’ve heard the expression “fall off the bone” I’ve never experienced it – until last night.  It was so flavorful and tender and the meat really did fall right off the bone.  And their sauce just enhanced it all.  The cole slaw was okay and nothing more, and I’m not enamored of fried mac-and-cheese – I’m a mac-and-cheese purist and frying it doesn’t really interest me at all.  I was so full, as were Doug and Hartley, that we abstained from dessert.  I will definitely be going back there, because I must have more of those corn bread bites, and I want to have a half rack of ribs next time.

After that, I came home.  I did more stuff for the trip to New York, New York, and other than packing the last few things in the suitcase, I am all ready to be on my way to New York, New York.  We also sent the Li’l Abner costume ahead and that will be there for me when I arrive.

Today, I will be up no later than nine-thirty, and then I shall be on my way to Teddy for my eleven o’clock appointment to be coifed.  Teddy was not feeling well yesterday, hence today’s rescheduled appointment.  Then I’ll come back to the San Fernando Valley, eat, hopefully pick up some packages and then finish packing.  Once that’s done, I’ll write these here notes early and schedule them to automatically post at midnight and then I shall hopefully get a few good hours of blessed sleep.

Tomorrow, I’ll be up at three in the morning, I’ll get ready, then Adryan Russ arrives and the car will arrive at four-fifteen and we will be whisked to the airport for our six-seventeen flight.  When we arrive we’ll go directly to our separate hotels.  I’ll check in and get situated, go to a nearby CVS or Duane Reade and get deodorant, and then at six I’ll mosey on over to wherever Beautiful is playing.  It’s a seven o’clock curtain and then I’ll go backstage to say hi to Liz Larsen, then some of us will go on to Joe Allen for dinner.

Friday, we begin rehearsing a ten and don’t finish until seven, which includes our two stumble-throughs and notes.  At seven several of us will go see Gentleman’s Guide to Murder and then eat at either Joe Allen or Angus McIndoe.  Saturday I do nothing but relax until sound check and then we do our two back-to-back shows, one at seven, one at nine.  Sunday is the exact same routine and Monday morning I shall be on my way back to LA.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, get coifed by Teddy, eat, hopefully pick up some packages, finish packing, write early notes and relax.  Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any old question you like and we get to give any old answer we like.  So, let’s have loads of lovely questions and loads of lovely answers and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, tummy filled with yummilicious barbecue food.
