THE LONGEST DAY

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, yesterday was Daryl F. Zanuck’s The Longest Day, without the Daryl F. Zanuck.  But in the end it was quite productive and I got done all that needed doing.  I was up too early, around six forty-five after under five hours of sleep.  I stayed in bed till eight-thirty and then began The Longest Day without Daryl F. Zanuck.  I began by making sure the set lists for the two New York shows was up to date and ordered correctly.  Then I began the adjustments to the patter, since neither show we’re doing is a mirror image of what we did here in LA.  So, I was cutting and pasting, writing some new patter, revising some of the old patter, and particularizing everything for the East Coast.  It took quite a while to do it, but I got it all done.

Then I went and had a chicken salad sandwich and no fries or onion rings, picked up no packages and came back home.  I then had to get our NY MD more tracks to hear, more music, and then had to look at the rehearsal schedule so I could make adjustments.  This is all very complicated and very unlike the way I do things here in LA – I knew that would be the case going in, but it’s very crazy making, I must say and just did.  Then I got our replacement for Jason Graae, the wonderful Liz Larsen, who was part of my Varese Sarabande rep company and who is currently starring on Broadway in Beautiful.  We’re deciding on her song today.  I also had several telephonic conversations, lots of e-mail volleys, then did a second eBlast for the shows, and then did some more song choosing for the holiday show in December.  I booked tickets for The Gentleman’s Guide to Murder, so that’s set, and I’ll have Liz arrange tickets to Beautiful.  By the time all of that was done, The Longest DAy was over, so I finally sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched two count them two motion pictures on the Flix of Net.  The first motion picture was entitled Venus in Fur and is the latest film of Roman Polanski.  I never saw the David Ives play, so didn’t know anything about it.  It’s a two-hander basically all in one location, the inside of a theater.  Polanski translated Ives play into French.  It’s obviously a dialogue-driven film, but Polanski’s direction is masterful, including it’s wonderful opening shot on a street outside the theater.  Of course, a film like this is wholly dependent on the performances, and the two stars are top-notch and acquit themselves wonderfully.  One of them is Emmanuel Seigner (who is also married to the director) and the other is Mathieu Amalric, who is a dead ringer for a young Polanski, which gives the film an interesting dynamic.  The film runs a quick ninety-six minutes and I really enjoyed it a lot.

I then watched a motion picture from 2001 entitled The Fourth Angel, a sort of thriller starring Jeremy Irons, Forest Whitaker, Jason Priestly and Charlotte Rampling, directed by John Irvin.  Interestingly, the film came out overseas in August of 2001, but the US release was pulled because the film involves terrorists attacking a US plane and, of course, 9/11 happened.  So it didn’t actually get a theatrical release in the US but instead went straight to DVD in 2003.  I like Mr. Irons very much and it’s not a terrible movie by any means – in fact, I enjoyed it for what it was and I think Mr. Irvin is a good director.

After that, I did a few things on the computer, took a hot shower, and that was that.

Today, I have to do a radio show interview for And the World Goes Round, I’ll choose Liz Larsen’s song and get the music for it, I’ll begin getting the LA singers their holiday songs, I’ll hopefully pick up some packages, then I’m meeting Barry Pearl and the stage manager of Li’l Abner for an early dinner, and then we’re doing to see the show she’s doing – I know absolutely nothing about it, not even the title.

Tomorrow I have no idea what’s happening and that goes for Saturday and Sunday, too, although I’ll try and figure out the show order for our holiday show and actually try to get the commentary done before I leave for New York, New York.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do a radio show, gather music, hopefully pick up some packages, eat and see a show.  Today’s topic of discussion: What is your favorite car you’ve ever owned – doesn’t even have to be a nice one, just one that you particularly loved.  Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy The Longest Day is at an end.
